Leaders fail at three things: celebrating wins and what's working, giving clear directions and expected outcomes, and consistently coaching and reinforcing both. These three practices build a workplace where teams actually succeed.

It's always great to look at what you wrote a couple of years ago and see what works. We're talking about communication issues that prevent effective leadership. Number 1 is celebration. They're all C's. You must celebrate your people for what they're doing right and what they want to do and what is working. Number 2 is clarity. You must give directions clearly, must make them understand what your messaging is clearly, must be clear about what the impact you want to have and you expect them to have and do for you. And number 3 is consistency. You must spend time with them— another C word— coaching them and giving them the tools and resources to make sure that they feel celebrated, to make sure that they feel that you are clear, and to make sure that you have a commitment with consistency to make sure they win. That's how we communicate in the workplace.
