In this monologue, Dan Negroni addresses leaders and HR professionals about the drivers behind the Great Resignation and offers concrete engagement strategies. He outlines five primary reasons employees quit: (1) lack of growth opportunities, which can be mitigated through coaching and mentoring; (2) more attractive external opportunities, which require organizations to showcase a culture of learning and care; (3) burnout, calling for systems that allow staff to recharge and learn self‑care; (4) misalignment with the company’s mission and vision, urging leaders to tell a compelling story about purpose; and (5) chronic short‑staffing, a management issue that demands innovation and transformation. Negroni repeatedly emphasizes the role of mentorship, coaching, and purposeful storytelling as levers to improve retention and engagement, inviting listeners to reach out for tailored assistance.

The biggest question for experts like me that focus on engagement for next-generation leaders in the workplace today is, why are they quitting me? And there are lots of reasons why people are quitting you. The first is, hey, there's not an opportunity for growth here. And I can tell you with that particular reason, if you are coaching and mentoring and you are teaching people how to have better skills, they will understand that there may not be a path for a promotion, but that you have their back and that you're trying to grow them. And that speaks volumes. Number 2 is, hey, there are better opportunities elsewhere. And again, I'm going to revert back. What are you doing to demonstrate to people that the culture where you are and what they're learning is going to make them grow? And it's better to grow in a place where people care about them and they know what to expect. So basically, again, boiling down to mentoring and coaching. Well, then there's burnout as the third issue. I'm burnt out. Well, What are you doing to put things in place and procedures to give people a break? All they have to do is actually be able to recharge or reenergize. And what do you have built in your systems to coach and train people on how to recharge themselves? That's something they're going to have to learn wherever they go. And then of course there's the bloody, oh, we don't have alignment with the mission. We don't have alignment with the vision. We don't do anything here. And that's up to you as an organization to really be able to tell your story and figure out the why you make a difference and get all of your people on board. And then number 5, finally, it's, we're short-staffed. This is so hard. It's never gonna get better. That's a management issue. I'm gonna guess in many businesses after COVID, it may be a challenge, but what are you doing to change and innovate? Again, mentor, coach, reshape, and transform based on what your people need from you. You want to figure it out? Drop a line below and we'll help you figure out what the specifics are that are bothering your people so they want to leave and help them figure out how to be more engaged, how to stay, how to lean into the coaching and mentoring that you are so artfully going to provide. You in? Because we are.
