Tower of Power
Over 50 years
Hey, everybody. Flip and Danny here, founders of the Freedom Real Estate Group family of companies. I got through that one. Yeah. Welcome to another episode of our podcast, and our podcast is called Freedom through Passive Income. That's right. And welcome to another episode. And this is one of our motivational Mondays, and this one is the Power of Music.
Yeah.
And so for those of you that, if you don't know us, we were musicians many moons ago, but music runs very deep for both of us because that's. We were trained both professionally. We went to many different schools from we lads up to. Paid a lot of money for schools, for college.
Yeah.
At least I did. Which I'm no longer paying. That's all paid off finally. Yeah. Yeah. So music runs deep for both of us. And you would ask me, like, you know, hey, what are. What are things? What type of music do you do for this? What type of music do you do for this? And then right before this episode, you're like, how can we relate this to real estate investing? And one of the things that I completely remember when I was the acquisitions department and I had to report to myself every day, how many houses did you find a day? How many. How soon did you get under contract? You need to do better. Flip. I had these conversations daily. And so, like, there'd be days when I'd walk into my office and I'm just like, I just. I don't got it. You know, I don't have the energy. I don't have. I can't. I don't. I don't. I just don't. I can't do it today. And so I would. I would shut my door and I'd turn off my email. I'd turn everything off, and I would turn on some music just for five or ten minutes, just to get me going. And so. And it was. And if you don't know the group, most people don't, but it's called Tower Power, which is a funk horn band. They've been around for over 50 years, which I can't believe, but, you know, along the same lines as James Brown, you know, just very happy, very energetic music. You feel the energy when you listen to the. To the songs from this group. And I would just sit and listen to it, and I would crank it up, you know, just. Just to get the blood flowing. And it worked every time. And I usually have a few songs here, there that would just. I would hear, like, you know, just like five seconds of it, and I would just. I'd be moving and, you know, I'M not going to dance here on this podcast. Yeah, I'm not going to do that. But. So anyway, so that would be, you know, find something. You know, if music doesn't do it for you, find what does it for you. I find most everybody relates to music and you can relate to. Remember in eighth grade, you know, when you listen to that one song, it puts you in a good mood, you know, or whatever. The music goes back, it triggers emotional memories. And so think of those songs that would get you excited. The Final Countdown, you know, or Eye of the Tiger or the Rocky theme. You know, any of those. Usually when somebody starts hearing the first few bars of the Rocky theme, they're. They're just ready. They're ready to run down the street, you know, and so. So it's finding that, you know, using something that it's not, you know, it's not artificial because it's. I'm sure it has something to do with the endorphins and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, you know, but it gets. It gets you going.
Yeah. We had done a coaching session quite a while ago. I remember being. I think it was in Arizona when we did this one for some reason, but maybe it was Texas. But remember when we talked about your brain, how the neurons and the synapses work? And it's like having a machete, and you're like in this big, tall field of grass, right? And we talked about taking that machete and just whacking, whacking, whacking. The more you repeated whatever step it was so it could be like the music thing, right? And the more you allowed your body to get motivated or do a certain activity, it was that pathway that you kept on beating down. And every single time you did it, the weeds or the whatever harvest it kept on, that pathway just kept on getting clearer and clearer and clearer. And the easier it was for you. In this case, we're talking about music. You turn on that music, and it's like a clear pathway right there. Because you've done it so much times, your brain knows, when I hear Rocky, I'm running, right? So it just. And it's automatic. Whereas the very first time, you're cutting down that harvest, right? And so it's tough, and it's tough, and it's maybe a little bit easier the next day, and maybe a little bit easier, but you're still like, whoa. And we all know our muscles, if we're talking about running, you know, that second or third day, holy crap, it's hard. But that's like the effort that kind of pushes you into starting to build that habit. So I think with music, the way that you just described it, I think knowing those types of songs and finding those things that you say when you didn't feel like going out and buying houses, you just didn't have it in you, and you just went, just put on some music. That was your brain going, this is what it's going to take to give you the energy and the boost and the motivation and the inspiration to then just go after it. And then you would go after it, literally. You were the acquisitions department for our family of companies for years all by yourself. We now have, like, 10 people in that company. It's crazy when I think about how many people are in that company and that you used to do it by yourself, so it worked for you, right? So that speaks a lot to it. I had, like, just Googled, because you're the one that creates all of our playlists, right? We've got different playlists for, like, when we're stressed out, when we want chill time, when we want to go to sleep. And that is one of my encouragements to you today is to create those playlists, identify those songs that you love. But one for me that I played a lot was A Million Dreams. And you actually looked at the sound. You're like, I just want to make sure that A Million Dreams was on this, because it was something I played over and over because it was so tough. And I was like. I would just play it and repeat, and you'd be like, I'm going to bed, Danny. And I'm like, it's okay. Repeat, repeat. And I'd be up for hours just listening to it because I needed to marinate in that world of I'm dreaming something. I have all these ideas in my head, and I'm going after them, and I'm not going to give up. As frustrated as I am, as tired as I am, as angry or disappointed or whatever it was that I was feeling, that was the song that just kept on going for me, and I had to keep on just listening to it. And as I was looking for the songs, I found, like, ain't no mountain high Enough. That one's just a fun one. Skyscraper, we are the champions, you raise me up. There's just lots of great songs, and I feel like everybody has kind of a song that makes them go. Just go. Attack life. So then I was looking in our Frag All Stars Facebook group, and it was a couple years ago that I asked people what songs Encourage you to be a better leader. Oh, and people listed a bunch of songs, but one of the comments on there was Tina, and she said, music can be a direct line into your subconscious. And I went, amen, sister. That is absolutely true. And so she created a bunch of playlists that would do certain things for her, depending on, you know, what she needed at the time. Very much like you do for us. And I just thought that that was something really cool. She has a playlist of songs that her smile, you know, and I actually read an article about that recently. I think it was in the Hustle, which we talked about recently too. Something about your smile and how it's hard. No, It's a Harvey McKay thing, I think. You sent me a Harvey McKay article about smiling. Yes. And it was very, very much about it's hard to be in a bad mood when you're smiling. It's hard to like in all of these things that make every situation better if you smile. And so she created playlists that just lifted her mood. Right. And made her smile. And I thought that's really incredible to think about things like that.
I thought the funniest thing about the smile thing is that an average 8 year old smiles like 3, 400 times a day and an average adult like 50 times a day.
Yeah, yeah. That's crazy. I mean, fortunately, I hope that you and I do a better job of that. We like to laugh, we like to have fun. We're goofy. But anyway, so create playlists for every single mood that you can. And if you have not actively started setting goals for yourself or given yourself a purpose or a why, or figured out what you want or you haven't taken the action steps to get you where you want to go. Figure out what songs are going to trigger you to put yourself in the mood to be able to do it. Just like Flip did for Acquisitions when he didn't feel like doing it today, he said, let me turn on this music because I got to do this today. If I want to get where I want to go, I have to do this today. People are depending on me, my family, my team, whoever it is that's depending on you. You are depending on you, quite frankly, to get where you want to go. Nothing happens without you actually taking action. So figure out the songs, you know, take the next steps and if there's anything we can do to help, that's why we're here.
Yep. Somebody said create the create three song or create a list of three songs that if you're driving down the street when that comes on the radio, you crank it as loud as possible.
There you go.
What are those three songs? Yes, I know my three. Like that.
Awesome.
