Ep 331 - Scrap Your Goals for 2023 & Do This Instead...

Flip and Danny argue for ditching rigid goals in favor of flexible targets. Targets reduce self-judgment and let you celebrate smaller wins, like cutting rehab timelines from 180 to 120 days. They share team practices like Monday kickoffs and Friday professional development that make this mindset stick.
Hey, everybody. Flip and Danny here, founders of the Freedom Real Estate Group family of companies. And welcome to another episode of our.
Podcast, which is called Freedom through passive Income.
That's right, and welcome to another episode. And this episode is entitled scrap your goals for 2023 and do this instead. Yeah. Yeah.
So I that as we got towards the end of the year, we're going to be talking a lot about planning for the following year, because this podcast is very much about our lives, our journey of freedom through passive income, and what we're doing so that we can help passive and active investors alike by just sharing our story and how we're doing what we're doing and when we do it. So one of the things that we're doing right now is starting. Starting to prepare and outline our goals for 2023. We had talked on our live episode that we're meeting with some of our key leaders in our team next week just to get some initial feedback about things that are going well, things that need some improvement. We'll probably do some SWOT analysis for people, for individual companies, and for the family of companies as a whole. So that's part of what we're doing right now that came. And as I'm thinking through this, it came this topic of goals and the word goals and things that I've been learning through all the books that I've been reading this year, through the leadership and mindset coaching that I've been going through this year, especially things like Gap in the game that we've talked about. We did a whole podcast episode about it and how you need to be looking at how far you've come and not necessarily always judging yourself based on the finish line. Right. Don't be so hard on yourself. And even our Thanksgiving episode a couple days ago, we were talking about the attitude, gratitude, and how that moves you forward so much better than paying attention to the where you're losing. And so the idea of this podcast and what we're doing for 2023 is instead of using the word goals, we're reframing it as targets, and they're just targets. Right. Because goals have this. I don't know, they have this weight of, if I don't hit my goal, I'm a failure. Right. Whereas target is just where you're aiming. That's all it is. Right? And where you're aiming can change and adjust in any given time, and there's no bad consequence or bad feeling associated with it. You just shifted your aim to a new target or adjusted it based on what you're learning. So we're reframing the word goal to target so that the team can adopt this mindset of, hey, it's just about getting better every day. The Darren Hardy thing. We used to listen to Darren Hardy every single morning as a team to learn from him and just take in that concept of just be better every day, single day. And that's the goal. We still have that as a company. We've just again switched our target of how we grow as a company, and now they've been doing some Monday kickoffs. They've been doing some professional development on Fridays. So again, we've just shifted the target of how we're growing to be something new, and we just adapt and change as we go. So I'm going to have you give an example that we just talked about in a previous meeting. This week or the week prior. I can't remember what it was. No, the week prior we were in Cancun, so it must have been this week or been two weeks ago. Who knows? But it's about rehab. So we're going to give you an example of what we mean here with regards to an average timeline. So do you want to go through this example?
Yeah. So right now, our current average timeline for.
In this example.
For. This example is getting. For doing a property is 180 days.
Yep.
Now we want the average to be 120 days.
Yep.
And so the point of this is. Is, you know, and by. By a certain time, we. We want to make sure that we have to give us a deadline.
Yeah.
You know, and actually, I don't like deadlines because it sounds so negative.
Target. Yeah, a target end date.
Sorry. Our golden is walking around, and we didn't want him to knock over.
He almost knocked down our music stand that holds our iPad and our notes, and now he almost knocked on the camera. So. Hey.
So anyway, so. But by a certain target date, and the point of this is that we don't want to be sitting there going, okay, we're at 180. We need to get to 120. And then not celebrating and not realizing the accomplishments that we've got or that we've done between the 180 and 120 days, because a lot of times people will go, all right, I need to get to 120. And they try and they try and they try and they try and they don't get to 120. And they're like, oh, we failed.
Yes.
You know, and that's what you. You need to avoid because That's. Well, it's so negative, you know, but you need to reward yourself. Hey, I just got from 180. Now we're down to 170. That's. That is a step in the right direction. I mean, I always. I'm always the one. You know, the Great Wall of China was built with. Just started with one brick.
Yeah.
You know, and so you got to reward yourselves for those smaller gains, you know, and then 160 or 165, you know, and just reward yourself. You're getting better, and you're getting towards your goal. Your goal is still here, and you're still going towards that goal.
Your target is.
Yeah, you're target. Yeah. Ye. And so you're trying to get there, but the point is to not focus only on that and to focus on all of the steps in between where you were and what your target is. So that way you can. And it makes the journey so much more enjoyable. And it actually. I don't know if there are studies out on it, but I'm sure there is. But it probably makes it go faster.
Yeah, you're more productive. You're happier. Anytime that you can do something and create a happiness of it, you can gamify it, if you will. That was in another book that we read, and I think that was like, two years ago. It's like, how do you gamify everything that you do? Make it fun? Because the funner it is, the more you enjoy doing it. And reality is, you do get there.
Faster because I believe it's more funner.
But he's exactly right. So we actually talked about rehab, average timelines. We're trying to reduce our average timelines. And so the example was if we were at 180, you know, our CEO Aaron said, hey, if tomorrow works, 179 guys, that's a win. Right? Because our target is 120. Again, this is the example. It's not our actual numbers because I couldn't remember our actual numbers. It was that mindset of celebrate one degree closer to where you want to go for that target. And whether or not you hit the target by the end, it doesn't feel as kind of nasty and negative. That, oh, I missed my goal. It's, hey, we got this close to our target. That is freaking awesome. All right, so what do we want to do in the next quarter? And now we're in a constant state of celebrating the wins and the small steps, which gives us all more energy and excitement and motivates us to want to do more so I think that that is a very, very powerful concept that anybody can adapt to what you're doing in order to replace negativity with positivity and make 2023 a different kind of year for you. Right. Because that's what's been happening to me as I've been learning all these different little TW and tricks to what I used to do. I'm not as frantic about racing to something. I'm more appreciative of the progress of getting there. I'm more present in the days and the experiences. I'm paying more attention to the team and what they're experiencing and problem solving. Because again, I'm not in a race. It's just about the journey. It's about the team, it's about the quality of life. It's about the fun. Because if you're not having fun, why do it? And I tend to have fun in a lot of things that I do, but I also tend to get really down on myself and negative if I'm not hitting the very crazy goals that I give myself. So in 2023, we're changing it up and already I can feel a lightness, a weight lifted of changing the word from goal to target. So I think it's a powerful concept that people can adapt to, whether you're passive or active.
