Giving Back to Your Team

Danielle Robison talks about building a culture of appreciation at work through karma points, a system for recognizing team members. The conversation covers how her organization supports people during hard times and uses leadership coaching to foster a positive environment.
So it's a known fact, the more you give, the more you receive. Well, that's not limited to outside of your organization.
Yeah. So we're all about giving. We love giving back to causes that we care about, but we also love giving back internally to our team. So some of the things that we do is karma points. I don't know if everybody would call these karma points, but there's this little system in Slack. The team is allowed to give karma points to everybody else in order to appreciate them for something that they've done. And those karma points then turn into rewards. It could be a day off. It could be like, I see a donut or something, or they got a gift of chocolates. I don't even know the entire system, but our entire team is going back and forth and giving each other common points for something they did. Like, hey, thank you so much for helping me out on this. I know it wasn't your job. Or, hey, thanks for that shout out this morning. Or, hey, thank you for appreciating me for this. They will just randomly, every single day give karma points to other team members to make everybody feel appreciated. There was also a time. Do you want to tell this story? Where there was a team member of ours, where her husband got it.
Yeah. Was in a motorcycle accident. And actually a whole bunch of the other team members actually just flooded them with karma points and they were able to use that to help them out in that time, you know, when she couldn't work because she was taking care of him.
Yes, that's right. And then we also all in the group donated some money to help them with medical costs. So I think those things are really, really super important. And then we also do it as leaders. We have some leadership coaching. So we have actually hired people specifically for our team in order for them to grow as leaders and be able to move up within the company so that they know that this is a place they can stay forever. I mean, we're at six going on seven and eight companies. So we plan to keep continuing to build more, and we hope that the people that are with us can continue to rise. When you build a culture like that, people love what they do. It doesn't matter when they're working. They're just always there to be able to be with the team, support the team, and make sure that the company is successful. And as a result, our investors are also successful. It's really a lot of fun. So if you do anything like that in your organization, we'd love to hear about it. Just drop some notes in the comments below and we can learn from you too.
I still haven't got any comments.
