Interview with our Director of Operations for acquisitions | EP. 38

A conversational YouTube vlog (Vlog 38) where host Danielle Robison interviews Matthew Packer, Director of Operations for Acquisitions at sister company Cash for Ohio Houses (part of the Freedom Real Estate Group). Topics include Matthew’s personal background (father to daughter Madison), his path into real estate (started ~2008), his recent hire (joined Cash for Ohio Houses about six months before recording), his role leading acquisitions and the sales team to source properties for investors, his interests (poker, family time), and his life philosophy (protect your peace; carpe diem). Tone is informal, upbeat, and promotional of team culture.
Hey, Freedom fans. Welcome back to another vlog episode here on our Freedom series. We are on vlog 38 already. I can't believe it. It seems like we just started them yesterday. And here we are. So today I am here with our director of operations for acquisitions, Mr. Matthew Packer. May hear us call him Packer. I know. I personally call you Packer.
You do?
So if you ever hear that or I see it anywhere on any of our websites, that's who he is. He is with our sister company, Cash for Ohio Houses. Do you want to say anything before we go ahead and get started?
Well, this is definitely a treat. This is fun. This is actually my first vlog ever.
Well, welcome.
I actually enjoy talking, so let's see how this goes.
Hey, I enjoy talking, too. I may go off a random beaten path. You never know. So I. We always start with. I used to say an easy question, but I have realized it is not that easy on. Who exactly is Matthew Packer?
Well, Matthew Packer, first and foremost, a father. You know, have my daughter love my life, joy of my life. It's what I do everything for. Forever the entrepreneur. You know, I love doing things, starting things, try to make things work. I enjoy helping people, try to bring them along. So. But just an overall happy guy. You know, I try to try to live life to the fullest.
Absolutely. I will say, every single time I see Packer walking through the hallways, when or in any meetings, he is always happy. Go lucky and smiling. And I love that.
Thank you.
Of course, the second question that I have is, when and how did you get started with our sister company, Cash for Ohio Houses?
Just a few months ago, actually, guys know Steve, so Steve is. That's family. You know, he's a cousin of a cousin, so. But he said, you know, working with this great company, this great family, we're doing some things, think he'd be a great fit, you know, to try to try to help us grow. But he kind of, you know, presented it to me, pitched it to me. I mean, I loved it. He sold it, you know, the first day, you know, I, of course, came in, met Danny, you know, interviewed me, if you will.
Yeah.
But, I mean, I fell in love with her instantly, you know, her energy, you know, second to none. But. But yeah, been hanging out here for about six months now and having a ball, loving everything I do.
Oh, good. Yeah. I actually think that I said in the inter. My interview, Flip hosted it, that when I interviewed with Danny, she was the first one I interviewed up with. I did two interviews it didn't feel like an interview and it was just exactly like you said, high energy. She asked me a lot of fun questions. I remember I hung up the phone and I called my mom and I was like, I want to work with this company. Oh, my gosh, yes. So it's funny you had the same experience.
Absolutely.
The next question is, have you always wanted to be in the real estate industry?
Yes.
Okay.
I'm going to say. Well, I take that back. So I started real estate about 2008.
Okay.
Mentor of mine kind of introduced me to the game and I'm a numbers guy, you know, he showed me some things, how things work. The numbers made sense and I said, that's what I'm going to do.
Yeah.
You know, I knew a 401K is, you know, it's great, don't get me wrong, but I wasn't going to be my retirement strategy, if you will. I definitely thought it'd be the passive income from. From real estate. So, yeah, like I said, it's been a passion of mine for now, you know, the last 13, almost 15 years. So. Yeah.
So. So now are you an investor yourself or are you licensed?
I guess on my way to getting my license. I actually have to take the test, but just dibble and dabble a little bit outside of this now. But yes, I've invested rental properties, things of that nature.
Beautiful.
Got my hand in a little bit.
Yeah. And that's what's so great about our companies. I know it's been mentioned in a couple of our podcasts as well as vlogs, is that we have people that are working within the company that are also investors themselves and do all kinds of different strategies, not even necessarily real estate, but it just helps better understand, especially from our investors point of view. Be like, listen, we're in the same boat you are. We understand this from your point of view as well. So that I'm learning stuff about you that I didn't know and I love doing these.
Absolutely.
Going back a little bit you mentioned Steve. For those of you who don't know, I don't believe we've done an interview with Steve. Steve yet. Steve is our project manager for Bulldog Renovations, another one of our sister companies, which we will be doing an interview with him here soon. He doesn't know that yet though, so he loves being on camera. My next question, maybe a little harder, is what exactly do you do in your role?
Sure. So I guess the title director of operations for acquisitions. You know, I essentially run cash for Ohio houses. You Know the framework of Freedom Real Estate Group here. We handle every aspect of creating turnkey properties for our investors. The very first part, of course, of that is the acquisitions piece. Gotta find the properties.
Yes.
So I basically lead the team, the sales team in doing that.
Okay.
So, you know, we're calling, we're finding properties, you know, helping people out with their problems to take most cases, take these properties off their hands. So. And then just creating that flow, the fuel for the fuel for the engine here, the machine here, and help and keep that going. So it's kind of it in a nutshell.
Nutshell, yeah. Beautiful. I like it. Changing things up a little bit. What do you like to do in your free time?
My free time? Like I said, outside of my daughter, like I said, she, she's, she's the. She'll be eight tomorrow, actually, so she's the driver of my life.
Well, happy early birthday.
Well, thank you. Madison. Madison. Yes, ma'. Am. But yeah, I mean, outside of here, I'd like to max and relax. You know, it's, it's, it's about peace in my life right now. So I, you know, I'll hang out on the patio, hang out with friends, family, you know, family's real close, so. But nothing, nothing too major. You know, I'm a low key kind of guy.
Hey, there's nothing wrong with that. I like to. Sundays are my day, where I just relax from the weekend.
So Sundays are great Sunday fun days.
Yes. All right. If you could have one superpower, what would that be?
Superpower? I think probably I like to read minds. I think, I think that would be a good one for me, especially because I like to play poker. There's something for you there. But reading minds, I like to, I like to try to be a few steps ahead of folks. So reading minds will probably help that out. But I think that would be it if I, if I, If I had to choose one.
I said the same exact thing. Yes. And actually that was a question that Danny asked me in my interview, and it's my favorite question to ask. And I said the exact same thing. Being in a marketing position kind of intertwines with sales. And so knowing what they're thinking and everything and how you can be like, it's all on how you could present something. And like you said, being a few steps ahead of things or people. I think that would be absolutely amazing to be able to read minds. All right, next question is, how do you handle stress? All that mind reading, how to handle stress?
I think I handle stress by trying not to have stress. So one thing, you know, I learned at a very early age is basically the whole concept of carpe diem. You know, you want to live every day to the fullest. You never know when this thing might be over with. So one thing is identifying what may cause you stress. So I try to limit that. I have. I live on a basically three tenements in my life right now. Daughter, time and money, in that order. Don't mess with my daughter, Tyra. Money. Nothing else matters. Anything outside of that. Ah, forget about it. You know, I tell people all the time, whatever situation that you're in, it's gonna be there no matter how you feel about it. You have a $400 electric bill, it's gonna be a $400 electric bill whether you're mad or happy about it. So why be mad? Or let it stress you out? It's gonna be there either way. So I'm just a glass half full kind of guy. Never cry over spilled milk. I have such a forget about it attitude. So handling stress is not having stress. So like I said, I'm a happy guy.
I like that. I am switching. The past couple years, I've been trying to switch my mentality. I used to be the glasses half empty gal, and now I've recently switched that. And I am living a much happier life. I had a incident happen yesterday, not a big incident or anything by any means. And I was like, you know what? I'm not even gonna let this happen. You know, I'm happy. I'm not gonna let this ruin my mojo I have going on. So it's just keep going with the flow. So it works for you, right? It does. And it's. Yeah. And I'm like, you know what? I'm just gonna keep dancing in my car. That's what I was doing. I was like, I'm just gonna turn the radio up a little bit more and I'm just gonna keep driving. So that is fun. I love that. We're almost done. This is another one of my favorite questions is if you had to give one piece of advice to the entire world, what would that one piece of advice be?
Protect your peace. Like I said, don't let things stress you out. You know, live every day to the fullest. You know, give people flowers while they can still smell them. But, yeah, just. Just live free. Yolo, baby. That's the best way to do it.
Yolo.
Yolo.
I love that. Oh, I love it. I love everything you just said there. Thank you. Well, I Don't have anything else to add. Is there anything else that you want to add to the end of this before we sign off?
Just want to say, you know, thanks for the Freg family for the opportunity, you know, taking this role and trying to lead us into the. To the next phase of things. But I'm just. I'm very happy to be here.
We are very happy you're here and helping us move along those next phases. You've been a huge piece of that. So thank you from the bottom of my heart. And I will go ahead and say on behalf of Freedoms as well and Fragments, thank you for everything that you do. It's been amazing on how much we have been progressing the past few months since you've been here.
Thank you.
Absolutely. All right, guys. Well, that is all that we have for you today. We will be back next week for another topic for vlog 39 insane. Still, I know we will be doing. This may be a surprise to you, but we will be doing a podcast with Packer in the near future that will likely be hosted by Flip and Packer. I will not be in it, but that will be real talk. That is R E I A L Talk, which is a podcast for investors, and it is real talk on real estate investing. I don't have anything else. I don't think you do. So we're going to end this how we always do with invest smart.
Live happy.
Live happy.
How did I just draw that blank? This is where we live happy.
Is that a rewind?
That was a rewind. We got bloopers now.
