A South African realtor explains how growing up during his country's turbulent government transition at 13 shaped him as an investor. He describes the chaos and uncertainty of that time, and how surviving it taught him to read risk and opportunity in ways that later defined his career.
I'm originally from South Africa, and I grew up during a very interesting time in South Africa's history. We had a transition of governments. I was 13, 14 years old when this all this stuff kind of happened. There was a lot of uncertainty. I would say it was a very turbulent environment, a lot of unknowns, pretty chaotic. That was actually a huge gift for me. I didn't realize that at the time, but being 13, 14 years old to go through that. I mean, this is a while back now, but, I mean, it's kind of crazy to you recollect certain things that you saw. You basically had a country preparing for civil war at that stage, and no one knew what it was going to look like, how this was going to play out and end up. So, anyway, as an investor and on my journey, that was a great tool to put in the backpack.
