A speaker (CEO/leader) shares personal leadership lessons focused on hiring and delegation. They emphasize learning by mistakes, avoiding 'babysitting' hires, empowering new hires to own tasks while being available for questions, and recognizing that some team members require more nurturing or are not a fit for roles that require autonomy.
Many CEOs, we didn't go to leadership school. We're just winging it, and we're figuring it out as we go and as we make mistakes, we learn and we improve and we get better. I don't want to say that I'm the greatest leader. I don't want to say I'm a really, really crappy leader. But I have learned a lot of lessons along the way. One of the most important things is I am the type of person that does not want to babysit somebody. I want to hire somebody where I can say, hey, Becca, I love you. I think you're perfect for this role. And when you come on, I'm going to give you tasks. You have the opportunity to ask any question that you have about this and come to me at any point in time with your question. But I'm going to let you own this, and I'm gonna let you take it to the finish line. So I will do that, and I will let them go. And I've seen some people excel and some people bang their head against the wall. Me, as a leader, I have realized that there's some people I need to foster or nurture more or check on them more, or just choose that. I can't hire that type of person underneath me because it doesn't work.
