Channel Update

David V. Kimball explains why his channel's upload pace has slowed and a planned N64 ROM-hack video was abandoned. After two decades split into four five-year phases, he's burned out on Smash content and wants to explore more casual, topic-based videos on a bonus channel instead.

Hey everyone, I wanted to provide a quick update video for subscribers on the main channel because really I've been struggling with videos on this channel. I know I teased a what-if video about Nintendo 64 games and I had a script written, I had ideas, I had things compiled, but I just realized, I don't know, I didn't really feel like making it. I don't I didn't know that it would— the goal of it was to shine the light on some really cool ROM hacking projects and then creating a scenario in which, what if this version of the game existed? Like, I had, what if Mario 64 came out a couple years later, or, and it looked a lot more refined? Or if there was a sequel to Ocarina of Time, um, before Majora's Mask? And, you know, what if Yura Zelda became a thing? And there are just so many amazing ROM hacks out there I wanted to showcase, but for some reason I just— my heart wasn't in it. And, uh, unfortunately, I think we're reaching the point where my interests are shifting. So this channel is called David V. Kimball. It's my name. I've had different interests throughout the years where I kind of hyperfocus on something. I would say the last 5 years has been really a focus on Melee mods and Melee coverage in general. I've always loved Melee. Smash Bros. Melee is still my favorite game. And then the previous 5 years was more like Brawl modding and like Project M related. The year— the 5 years before that, from like 2010 to 2015, was obsessively Windows Phone, Microsoft related. I loved what they were doing with Zune and Windows Phone, basically every failed product that they made. And so a lot of you were probably after that era, but some of you are from that era. My most viewed video is still a Microsoft Windows related video on this channel. And then the years, 5 years before that, who knows? I mean, we're talking, you know, high school before at that point. But the point I'm trying to illustrate is I hope that, you know, if I were to go another direction with the channel or, you know, maybe not upload as frequently, that that would be okay. Uh, I hope so. Um, and, uh, I've been uploading a lot more casually on my bonus channel, which I'll link in the description. And so I've been kind of experimenting with more of these talking head topic-based videos. I'm really into a lot of other things as well besides making videos on Smash or, or derivative properties. So anyhow, I don't exactly know what the goal of this, this video was. I guess just to update you where my head was. I did have something in the works. I had a few other ideas as well, like showing some really cool prototype builds that you can play, but honestly, other channels on YouTube do it better, and they've— it's kind of been done. Uh, so the other thing about the N64 What If video was I didn't put the amount of research I did for the other Smash-related titles for the What If videos there. So it was sort of like just throwing things out there. The, the closest thing would be like a tenuous connection to Ura Zelda and some things that maybe would have happened, and— but the level of research wasn't there. So I feel like I'd just be playing, I'd be like screen recording some gameplay from some ROM hacks throwing it into a timeline and saying, what if this happened? What if that happened? And for some reason, I don't know, that didn't, that didn't seem as appealing as far as like a finished product I'd be happy with. So anyway, um, not super eventful video, but I wanted to say thank you for subscribing and following. Um, recently we've been doing a lot of hanging out and, uh, chilling on the Discord server, so I'll make sure I include a link to that below as well. And in general, I'd love to hear from you. Please comment, um, what's, what's, what you love to see from this channel. Maybe, you know, ideas for what you want to see. Maybe share your reception to this idea of maybe trying other, you know, other topics or things that are not necessarily related to Smash. Um, if you like more casual stuff like this, you know, maybe I'll move some of the more casual videos I have on my bonus channel onto this one. Who knows? I'm totally open and Would love to hear what you guys think. Thank you so much for, uh, all your support throughout the years, and I'll catch you guys on the next one.
