The #1 Mindset Shift that Improved my Life Forever

YouTube talk by Dean Graziosi advocating a mindset shift: take 'uncomfortable action' and learn from those who've succeeded to accelerate growth. He shares personal backstory (poverty, motivation from his mother, paying for Tony Robbins' programs) and practical exercises (whiteboard gap exercise, annual family theme 'Who are you when no one's watching?') to prompt honest self-assessment and sustained effort in network marketing and personal development.

In my 20s, I always thought you had to learn on your own. Like, I have to figure this out. I just got to work harder. Harder. I know you've heard this before. Harder or smarter. It's the combo. You got to work smarter and you still got to work hard. But there's one thing that really has made a fundamental shift in my life. This is a time when uncertainty is at an all time high. We could just say it like it is. This is a time where the world's not going back to the way it used to be. You know, I think when Covid first started, we were like, man, this is crazy. It'll go back. We have found a new normal and it's not even normalized yet. And what it does internally, it really does mess with your certainty. It really does play with your mind. It sometimes makes us want to stand back a little and see where things land. Here's the thing. In times of uncertainty, we want certainty. We want to take care of our family. But simultaneously, you're so scared and your confidence is ding, just a little, that we kind of sit back waiting to see where the chips fall, and you can't. You see, I believe in times like this, we must be the leaders that God, whoever you believe the universe designed us to be. I believe we have to take the uncomfortable action that we've been waiting on in network marketing. There are some uncomfortable pieces I hope I get to. I'm going to share something on the whiteboard here today, something that's transformed my life. I hope it delivers in a way, but these are the times we have to take. And you should write this down because if you know anything, if you've ever met me before, I love using this word. We must take uncomfortable action. If it was comfortable, if it was easy, everyone would be doing it right. We have to step out of our comfort zone. You felt this way before, and you didn't do what you needed to do to make it happen. You got to a certain point and your comfort zone ran out. And you're like, let's wait to see what happens. And it's the things that we feel comfortable with. We'll keep moving forward. And then, oh, my God, I gotta invite some people over. Oh, my God, I gotta make a phone call. Oh, my God, I gotta stand up in front of anybody. You know what? Let me just push it off till next week. Let me push it off to next month. And you're thinking there's an unfair advantage or something else. It's really. Let me just boil this Down. We must take advice from people who've already been there. You're learning from somebody who knows what the heck they're doing that can expedite your time. You cut a check for speed, right? That's the first thing. But number two, we also sometimes resort back and say, I'll figure this out on my own. You know that that's not the case in today's rapidly moving world. You can't keep up. Once we gain those capabilities, then we actually have to do something with it. And that is the uncomfortable action. Whether you need an accountability partner, you need to be a part of something bigger than yourself. We need to be plugged in. Because if you're not, it's easy to avoid the things you don't want. It's like starting a business and you love everything about it. But maybe you don't like selling. It'll never work in the history of the world. So we need to gain those capabilities, gain those that comfort and move on. But again, another thing I wrote down while I was watching, I'm going to share something with you guys that was a part of my 2021 theme for my family. Every year we set a tone, set a theme for the year. Like there's New Year's, resolutions are amazing. We all think about it. But with my kids who are now 15 and 13 and I have a little 20 month old and my wife, we sit down and we come up with a theme. My theme for 2021 is something I'd like to share with you guys. And I didn't have this written down until just now. It's in my brand new notes and it's this. Who are you when no one's watching? Who are you when no one's watching? Do you tell people I'm in network marketing, I'm going to do all these great things. I know there's certain people probably look at you sideways, right? And then there's family members who support you. But so many people in the world and this is what I told my kids. Let me just share with my kids. My daughter's 15, my son's 13. Do you know what they could do when no one's watching with just this thing in their hand? There's a million things my kids can do. They could say they're going to a friend's house and go to a party. They could be looking at crap online that we didn't have access to with one touch when we were a kid. There is a million things a 15 and a 13 year old could be doing when no one's watching. But you know what I said to him? You'll know. You'll know when you sit at the dinner table and you're afraid to look at your father in the eyes. You'll know when you have to lie and it doesn't align with your values and who you are. I said, my daughter, both my kids play baseball. My daughter, softball, she pitches. She pitched today. Did great. I said to my daughter, you say that you want to play base softball all through high school. You want to start. You want your friends to come cheer you on. You want to go to college and play softball, but you don't win games on the field, babe. You win games when you're in the backyard when it's 100 degrees out and you're sweating and you're pitching to a coach or pitching into a wall and no one's watching. Say the same thing to my son over and over. So what I want to share with you is don't say you want another level. Publicly say, I'm in network marketing. I'm going to do this. But when the time comes and no one's watching, you're binging out on Netflix. You're looking at things that rob your confidence. You're not setting goals, you're not making the calls because what's going to happen in six months, it's a self fulfilling prophecy. You go. Network marketing is not for me. No bs. You didn't make the calls. You didn't take the uncomfortable action. You didn't gain the capabilities. You let the naysayer in your life who always talks you out of crap, talk you out of what you wanted, right? So I just threw this out there. Before we start, I want to share. I love that thought. And I'd love for you to steal that theme because for me, it keeps me accountable. Who am I when no one's watching? I don't want to say I want to be the best man to my wife, but I'm doing crap on my phone when no one's watching. I don't want to say I'm being a good dad and show a picture on Instagram with me and my kids, but not really listening to them and spending more time on my phone than being with them. I don't want to say that I want to create independence and donate money and build family security and leave a legacy, but I'm binging out on Netflix on the weekend or drinking too much every time I get sad just to default to that rather than do it. I Want to be congruent. I want to make it so. And I'm surely not perfect at this, but I want to make it, though. If you had a hidden camera on me for six months, there'd only be a few congruencies. And that's success to me, and I'd love for you to think about that, because when this weekend's over, this doesn't have to be the end. Right? This could be the beginning of a new you, a beginning of not playing small, a beginning of not feeling bad about what you want out of life. So I went on a little bit of a rant there, but I want to share before today what I want to do. And I got. See, I got plenty of time. I. I want to share three or four universal principles for success. There are certain key principles. Not a magic money machine. Not getting rich for doing nothing. Not hit your double double without taking uncomfortable action or courageous action. But there are key principles that really, if they're not a part of the ingredients, the cake's never baked. Right? So I want to go over those today. I think it's really important. First, though, I want to share a little bit, just in three minutes, my backstory. And I think it's important not because I want you to know about me, but I hope it relates to you. You know, we all have the thing that drives us. You're all here for a reason. You're either running away from something that's not so good, something a little painful, right? Or you want to run towards a bigger life. We all do things because of pleasure and pain, because there's something in your life that's uncomfortable, and you want to move away from that, from that job, from that relationship you're in, from being dependent on someone else to show the world you're to be the woman that God designed you to be or the man God designed to be. Something just doesn't align with you, and you want to move away from that, or life's not bad, Things are okay, but you know you're meant for more. You're called to serve more, be more, do more, donate more. Right? 100% of you are here for one of those, one of the other reasons. And most of you here are both. You want to move away and then move towards right? So I want to tell you I was. I wanted to move away. I wanted to move away from a life. We didn't have money as a kid. We all got our story. Not poor me, just this is my. This is my story. But what really was my Muse. My motivation was my mom. She worked three jobs. My parents split when I was three. Dad's a good guy, but he never helped us financially. And my mom worked as a hairstylist and cleaned houses and painted houses. Three jobs to make nothing. Come home, nine o' clock every night, always tired, and come home to our trailer, right? I lived in the only trailer park in our little town. My sister and I watched my mom work her tails off to where she got arthritis at a young age and her back always hurt. So I just remember being 10 or 11 saying, I'm just going to get rich. I don't know how, but I'm going to get rich and take care of that woman who sacrificed so much, you know, so we all need that driver. So for me, that was it. So I started cutting firewood at a young age. I started fixing wrecked cars and I got into my first real estate deal. Then I got a tow truck company. I started building houses. I started doing all these things, and I started getting some real good momentum in my mid-20s. By the time I was 30, I retired my mom, retired, my dad. I got to do some of these really cool things. But around 27 years old, something really shifted my life. I saw Tony Robbins on TV in an infomercial, and this big guy, I felt like he was talking directly to me. And there was something I had never done up until that time in my life. I paid for information. And I remember my dad saying to me, are you nuts? You paid for a guy to talk to you. He's like, I'll talk to you for free. And I felt like saying, yeah, but if I listen to you, I'll get married four times and divorce like you are, and always struggling financially. I love you, dad, but if I listen to you, I think I'll get what you have. So I cut a check to Tony Robbins, and I won't go super long on it, but it fundamentally shifted me because I hadn't read books up until that point. I had some success in my life. I surely did, but I had it in a kind of a hosed up way. Anybody ever have success in your life? But you know it's not healthy, right? You're just moving away from pain so much that doesn't feel congruent with who you are. And I devoured what I bought from Tony. I learned that I could craft a new story, that I could have different beliefs, that I could use my past as my fuel. I learned that life happens for us, not to us. I learned that I could focus on solutions. I don't have to listen to the naysayers that they don't make. Make statues of critics. They make statues of the crazy people, the dreamers. I could focus, like Eric was saying. I could set an intention and spend all my energy looking at that and screw all the things that weren't working. I learned all this stuff, but it did two things. To me. It really fundamentally shifted my life. But secondly, I was like, damn, that gave Tony money. He gave me information. It shifted my life. I want to be in that business. So for me, it shifted my mindset, but it also shifted my career path. And in 1998, I did my first information product and then infomercial on tv. I only did an infomercial because there was no Internet back then. For those of you that are a little younger, everybody's like, why would you and Tony have done infomercials? Because there was no Internet. There wasn't even AOL dial up when I started. Right. So I share that with you because it was such a fundamental shift. I account masterminds, workshops, live events. I've spent literally over a million dollars between hosting them or attending them in my life. And truly, I believe it's my unfair advantage, because in my 20s, I always thought you had to learn on your own. Like, I have to figure this out. I just got to work harder. Harder. I know you've heard this before. Harder or smarter. It's the combo. You got to work smarter, and you still got to work hard. You need both. Right? So it was definitely a lesson. But there's one thing that really has made a fundamental shift in my life. I feel like an imposter on a regular basis. I just. I feel like I'm not good enough on a regular basis. All of those feelings are still in there, but we don't squash them. We just find a way to overpower them and realize that that voice is wrong. The voice that tells you you can't or you're scared or you're too old or you're in the wrong area or you can't sell or you're an introvert. It's all bs. It's all a voice. It's all a belief that we get to squash. And I hope today I can give you a little something. Both on the pragmatic side, little on the tactical side, little bit of inspiration. Let's go to the whiteboard and I'll show you this exercise. Right. Because the fact of the matter is. Well, I'll get to in a moment. We all have A gap. We all have a gap. And I've simplified this in my life to how do we fill that? So this is what I want to share with you. Okay? So very fancy writing. I want to share with you where you started. I don't know if where you started is out of high school, out of college, started your career. You could put this anywhere in your life. And then as we go, we get to where you are today, this very moment that you're in this room for a reason. You signed up, you raised your hand, you cut a check, you put the. You, you know, put it on your calendar, you made arrangements, and now you're here. And life was just blissful and perfect from where you are to where you are now. No, I'm just kidding. Hopefully it's growing, but it's like, you know, life is really like this, right? Like, I got the job. Okay. I'm so happy. I don't really like this job anymore. I'm going to start my own business. Okay. It's going to take a little time. Oh, I can't do this. I'm going to fail. Oh, no. I got momentum. Oh, my God. I got to hire. I mean, that's just the way it is. It's the same with relationships. It's the same with everything. But for today, let's just. Let's just look at it more of a straight line, just to make the emphasis of where you were, where you started, and where you are now. So where are you now? And I want to give you what has shifted my life forever. So please don't. Don't be passive on this one. Don't be passive on this one. Go all in. When I say, where are you? All change. And this is what I want you to write. All change starts with being honest with yourself. All change starts with being honest with yourself. You know, there's a lot of people in all of our lives that say, I feel blessed. I'm grateful. I should be really happy with my life, and you should be. We're here. We're breathing oxygen. 150,000 people die every single day today. It's none of us who are on the screen. And I feel very fortunate for that. And I'm glad you're blessed, and I'm glad you're grateful, but that doesn't mean that you should be happy with where you are. We were meant to grow as humans. If we're not climbing, we're sliding. If we're not growing, we feel dead. That is the journey. So it's okay to Be honest. You're here for a reason. Where are you in your life? Are you moving away from something painful? Are you moving towards something better? Do you want to have a clean state? It's clean slate. It's a new beginning. You're starting over, taking it to another level. You're really just beginning all change start. Like, where are you? So here's the cool part. You can take down these notes and you could do this again at another time. This might take you 20 minutes just to do this, to really go in, you know, I feel like I was meant for more in this world. I've tried other things in the past and people around me don't see my full potential. I got lost being a mom and a wife and doing my job and I forgot that I am somebody, that I am supposed to do the thing that's calling me to do something bigger. I don't know where you are, but you do and anchor an emotion to this. Like, where are you in your life? Right? And if life is good, which it is for most amazing, but you're still here because you want another level. Where I'm at is I'm content. I don't want to be content anymore. I've made some money. I want to impact more lives. So all change starts with being honest with yourself. Make sense. So now, if this is where you are now, where do you want to go? You're here for a reason. Sorry, this is so sloppy. You're here because you want to go to another level. You want to. I saw all the numbers. You guys want to make more money. You want to impact more lives. You want to have more freedom. There was a million things that were written, but let's pretend it's a year from now and it was the best year of your life, right? So many times in life. I want to share this with you. When we look at our goals, this is just a hack. You guys can, if you like it, great. If not, throw it away. Take what serves you, throw the rest away. When I look at goals moving forward, sometimes I can be overwhelmed by looking at goals because we have so much crap in our life, so many things going on. Some days aren't you just glad when your head hits the pillow and you made it through another day? Let's be honest, who feels that way sometimes? Like, oh, I just made it through. So sometimes looking through your goals, getting the kids to school and start, you've still got your current job and you're trying this and you already talked to a couple people and they weren't interested, and your best friend says, oh my God, network marketing, that's not for you. You got to be an extrovert. You got to make people feel uncomfortable. All that crap, right? When you look through it, sometimes it's like, ah, that seems heavy. Let me just see where this goes. Pretend you could pull yourself out of that circumstance and we could pretend it's a year from now, and instead of looking forward to where we want to go, let's look back and say, damn, that was the best year of my frickin life. What's up? What's up? Hey, don't forget to look at the action steps we've posted below. They are the perfect way to take your success abundance in this crazy world to a whole nother level. Sam.
