Why 'If You Build It, They Will Come' is BS in Business & Life

Dean Graziosi says a great product alone won't succeed. You need marketing and sales, which he calls the oxygen of business. He pushes authenticity over tactics, entering conversations your customers are already having, and doing unglamorous work for years.

Selling and marketing is the oxygen. It is the breath of every single successful company in the world. With all the opportunities that exist today, why haven't you reached your next level of income, life and wealth? In most cases, we've been lied to. We've been told that if you find the right opportunity and you work hard, you can be successful. And that's simply not true. Millionaires, billionaires and successful people have realized you need the foundation for wealth, the habits. And that's exactly what you, you'll be learning on the Millionaire Success Habits podcast. All success starts here. If you love what you do, if you know you make an impact on people's lives, the fact of the matter is you're doing people a disservice if you don't learn marketing and sales at the ability to get them to take action. So anybody remember the movie it's probably dating myself with Kevin Costner called Field of Dreams. Anybody remember that movie? Okay, do you remember the tagline through the whole movie? If you build it, they will come. Guess what? If you build it, they won't freaking come ever. What happens? We all get delusioned by the outliers, the 1/10 of 1% who create a fidget spinner or a gadget or an invention and it goes viral with no work. So we see all that and what we do, we subconsciously were taught, we subconsciously think that if we just get better at what we do. If I'm the best coach on the planet, if I'm the best presenter on the planet, if I have the best product on the planet, if I write the best book on the planet, they will come. They will never come. And the worst part about it is when your business isn't doing good, when you're not making the money you want. What we do is like we're on a treadmill running on four and that stuff's really not working. So all you do is put the treadmill up to eight and you're going faster and quicker and you're not sleeping and you're on your phone non stop. But on a treadmill, do you get any place because you're missing the most fundamental thing. Selling and marketing is the oxygen. It is the breath of every single successful company in the world. We think that there is this magic formula that we have to be like someone else. You have to be the perfect stage presenter. You have to be the have the perfect website with the perfect arrow. And what is the opt in page and what is the downsell and what is the cross sell and Then what are you going to sell them into? And then are we do like all those things? Yes. Are fundamental. They're tactical. You can buy that blueprint, get click funnels or one of the companies online that show you how to do that. But the thing is, you can do all that. The tactics, you can do all the steps, you can build the greatest product in the world. But if you don't market and sell it, they're not going to buy it. Who in here thinks what they do, their product or service is amazing? Okay, if you think it's amazing, that's the foundation for all sales. Here's the first thing. Love what you do so much that you feel bad if people don't get it. I watch when it's time for the person to offer their services. They're like, oh, my God, I got them over the hump. They changed their life. And I have the opportunity for you to buy my product today. And they're hitting slides. And you physically watch people. You'll see it from now on. You'll watch people and they'll start walking backwards on stage. They're apologizing for the sale. There's people in this room who either get quiet when you go to sell or you almost apologize. Hey, you know what? If you'd like more of these services, you know, I mean, I'm not, I'm not. If you don't want to, you don't have to. I'm just saying, like, you know, whatever, you just email me and then you just can't get away. If you're selling, whether you're writing it, whether you're talking face to face, whether you're doing a video, I'm telling you to be real and be raw and give the good, the bad and the ugly. Because people know that nothing is easy subconsciously. And if they know you've been through a journey, they know you've had the experience, they immediately will build rapport with you. I'm talking about sharing that vulnerable moment that the mistake you made, the thing you were embarrassed about, and then show them where you've come. What if all the little failures, all the little challenges, all the struggles that you've been through, to be in this room, to be smart enough to be in this room, to be smart enough to learn from somebody like Shanda. What if all of those things were nothing more than you paying your success tax? Think about it this way. You can use any word you want. I like simple words that frame it and give me immediate feeling. Here's what I know if you're in a band, wouldn't it be amazing if you were in a band that if you could play Madison Square Garden and it was a sold out crowd of 50,000 people and you were on the edge of the stage jamming and they were all singing your song, would that be like the dream if you played in a band? Right. So, but here's the thing, everybody wants that. But who's willing to pay the success tax? Who's willing to play the guitar in their room when no one's watching until their hands hurt? Who's willing to pack up an old beat up van and go from dive bar to dive bar with nobody in there, people booing them, trying to get their songs down pat. Who's in? Fighting with band members and got to throw a guy out and get somebody else in. Who's in? Who's in for their parents telling them they were crazy to try to be in a band, go to college and do something. You got to defy your parents. Nobody's willing to pay that success tax. But everybody wants to stand on stage and jam. It's the same in business. Everybody wants the millions of dollars, the significance. They want the pat on the back, they want the easier life. But most people aren't willing to come to a room like this. Most people aren't willing to question their own thoughts. Most people aren't willing to have a partner screw them over or someone take their money or the course not go right and still move on. If you want to raise the level of your income, raise the level of your happiness, raise the level of your success and raise the level of your problems. The greater problems you have, the more success you have. People don't get that part. Here's what I know. When I was first in business and I used to work on cars and real estate and I'd be stressed and stay up all night to work on a car, that would make me 500 bucks. I stayed up all night, I was sick to my stomach, didn't know if it was gonna work. Was the deal gonna fall through six months ago? And I'm gonna say so brag. I did a deal where I was at the closing table and I had a $19 million check. The stress did that 19 million DOL and the stress for that 500 bucks, same stress. Why not have stress over the 19 million? It's the same. I swear to you, it's the same. And here's what I'll tell you. I remember being broker than broke as a kid and my mom we Lived in a trailer park, crappy cars, all that stuff. And I remember seeing people that I thought were a millionaire. I was like, wow, a millionaire. And I remember thinking, if I ever met one, what's gonna happen is they're gonna, like, if I'm really good, if they like me, they're like, they'll pull something out of their pocket, like, something that would hold jewelry, and they'll open it up and, like, sun rays will burst out of it, and, like, music will play, like the heavens open. And, like, this is the secret to a millionaire. And then the more I did it, the more I realized that had nothing to do with it. It's all the stuff we're talking about here. People will buy from you, learn from you, respect you when they feel understood, not when. That is a fundamental difference in the way people approach sales. We get so fixed on what we provide. The service that we have the company we have, the product we have. We know people need it so bad, and we get delusioned. How many people need to stop eating as much sugar as you eat? How many of us need to go to the gym just a little bit more? How many of us need to probably listen more than we talk? How many of us need the work? Like, we all need a lot of things, but you don't do any of that until you want to. No one quits smoking because they need to. They finally quit when they want to quit. No one goes to the gym because they need to. They finally go to the gym when they kind of want to. So you get delusion between need and want. So here's how you solve that. Enter the conversation already going on in the mind of your prospect or your client. When you understand their fears, when you understand their goals, when you hear what they're saying, you can finish their sentences. When you get so obsessed that what you have is so magical and it can change the world and they need it, you don't enter their conversation. You're trying to ram your conversation into their head. And usually what that does is you have to transform everything. Wouldn't it be easy if their conversation's already going, you already got liftoff. Just enter that conversation, see where they are, and then get them to divert the plane towards what you have to sell. Because if you think about this, sometimes we have to sell people what they want, and we have to give them what they need. Change the way that you feel about persuasion. Love what you do so much that you'll feel bad if you don't get it in people's hands. Remember, authenticity will outweigh perfection in my opinion, 100% of the time. Don't start when it's perfect. Start now and get better as you go. Jump out of the plane and grow wings on the way down. Stop being afraid. Get in the game. I've been blessed to meet so many millionaires and billionaires and they all started exactly where you are. Everybody thinks someone had a leg up. I've never met anybody with this unfair advantage that all of it was handed to them. They all have disaster stories, but you see someone, it seems like an overnight success. It took them 30 years of getting their ass kicked to look like an overnight success. We all have to pay success tax. Find out what you want. Understand where you really want to go. Sell yourself on it daily. Know that authenticity and your vulnerability will outsell any fancy salesperson.
