G', day, guys, and welcome to the first episode of the new season. But I wanted to start the year with an important topic on how to manage anxiety as a video business owner. Now this is something that I've experienced many times over the last 11 years and nobody understands that more than my wife, Sam, who is also a highly sought after, intuitive leadership coach and energy healer who specializes in helping people that prefer an outside the box route to personal growth and development. So whether it's securing bigger gigs at work or improving relationships at home, or finding your partner for life, the beauty of this work is it shifts the body's energy field and really gets to the heart of the issue. So I'm opening myself wide open because Sam is my wife. So here's what we talk about in this episode. We talk about emotion and as filmmakers, we're empathic emotions, a big player in a lot of the work that we do. But emotion is just energy. In emotion, we also go into the murky depths of fear and anxiety. Fear and anxiety lives in our head. And so, you know, if we can move from our head to our heart and trust our instinct and how we feel, we can make some incredible breakthroughs. So Sam also reveals a core strategy for countering anxiety in just 30 seconds and that process that you can deploy to manage your own anxiety when it creeps in. So it really is going to be a tremendous episode. And at the end, Sam has got some resources that she can share to help you take this further as well. So I hope you enjoy this episode. I wanted to start the year by being vulnerable and sharing with you that I am just human and that I suffer from these things that I'm sure you can relate to. This episode is sponsored by the Video Business Accelerator Mastermind. This is a business coaching and mentoring program exclusively for video production companies. Rather than me tell you about it, let's hear from some of our members.
As far as video business is concerned, it was a no brainer for us. It's the right pain points that we went. These are the things that we need to work on and these are the solutions that are offered by by DEN and the Video Business Accelerator. The reason I joined the accelerator was I really wanted someone who could help guide and mentor us through that next level. So we're going through quite a period of change at the moment. Our industry is changing massively and I really wanted that support and mentoring and.
That'S exactly what Den provides.
The Video Business Accelerator event has been great so far. Den always provides a lot of value.
He was really good at communicating with filmmakers as well, because he obviously has such a great passion and past working in it. So it's really good to hear somebody talk about business theory and marketing strategies and things. But from a perspective of being a.
Video production company, quarter three of this calendar year was the biggest year, biggest quarter we've had, and now wrapping up on quarter four, towards the end of the calendar year, it's been bigger again. So, yeah, it's obviously working. I'd say the biggest advantage of being part of the Video Business Accelerator Group is the group itself. Yes, you've got Den the expert to turn to for advice, but more often than not, when you ask a question of the group, you get a variety of different answers. Everyone's kind of come across the same problems, but everyone has a different approach to solving them. We're all there to help each other. I think that's a big bonus of being part of the group.
So if these case studies sound like they resonate with you and you're ready to take your business to the next level, then head over to Denleny.com and click on Work with Den. There are also a heap of other great resources available on the site now. Enjoy this episode.
So this is my wife, Samantha. Hello, Samantha.
Hello, Dennis.
So this is a little bit odd because I've never really done anything like this with Sam before, but I thought it was a really important time of the year to talk about the subject of anxiety and fear. January, particularly for a lot of people, it can be a quiet time of year. And I've been with some 15 years from the very inception of F Stop Academy. Right. Way back from the beginning. So Sam has a unique perspective on that journey. And I have suffered from a lot of anxiety over the years. And I mean, you know, I don't suffer from as much of it now as I used to. And when I do feel it coming on, I recognize it. So, Sam, maybe you can sort of share a little bit about the journey you've been on with me as a partner, but also kind of professionally as a relationship coach and practitioner of multiple modalities. What's been the biggest shift for you observing me in the last, I don't know, even 12 months?
Sure. Well, first off, thank you for having me. It's awesome to be here. And I'm a bit of a podcast virgin myself, so this is going to be quite good for me. So thank you for allowing me to come on. It's great to be here. Yeah. To answer your question. So, first off, I am A. I guess I would call myself an intuitive coach, a healer. I help facilitate and guide people to, I guess, feel better to be their best self, if you like. So I work with business owners, men, women.
People that want to kind of do better, increase, you know, be healthier, but perform better in their life, whether that's relationships, career or whatever. So.
I guess, you know, just coming back to your question, how things have kind of changed for you, I think, I think from witnessing, obviously I witness a lot about you because we spend a lot of time together. But.
The thing I guess witness about.
You know, that pressures of being in business, being a business owner and you know, always being in that doing and always kind of trying to second guess the next step and trying to think about firefighting and thinking about strategy and whatever. And you know, when it comes to anxieties, anxiety tends to come about because there's so much going on and we're trying to do the best, be the best.
And I guess have this inner dialogue, this inner conversation about the whole spectrum of work and we're trying to control it. And when we're trying to control it, that creates a lot of anxiety because we want to try and make things a certain way. And of course, life doesn't always give us what we need. So I think from your perspective, the anxiety that, you know, I've seen you move through and since we've been working together, is that to get out of the head and be more in a heartfelt space means that you have less of this anxiety type, almost like a resistance, if you like this sort of clunkiness that the mind gives you when you're, you know, you're so up here. So I think that's really what's happen with you, is just being able to kind of stop and go, take a breath and go, actually, I'm feeling this anxiety right now. How is this serving me? Is a. Is a good first step, I think.
I think what's interesting, I think first time I say is that I think we spend too much time thinking as men, particularly as business owners, because we're always problem solving. We're always trying to, you know, we learn early on in our relationship that when your wife or partner is going to, you know, yakking on about some issue with, with something that's going on and we just automatically want to problem solve and you turn around and go, I don't look, I'm not looking for a solution. I just want you to listen. Do you think there's an element of we have to listen to ourselves. But we can't do that in our head because the chatter in our head is the brain processing. Because we think the brain's this muscle. That's where all this, the supercomputer does this processing. But in actual fact, the heart, and I forget what it is, isn't the heart like something like 10 or 100 times producing more electricity than the brain? And it's actually the heart and the guts are providing a lot of stability. But I think certainly from my own perspective, it's always been like, I'll think of a problem, I'll think of. I'll think my way out of a problem rather than feel my way out of a problem.
Yeah, absolutely. So we need the brain. We need, we need to be able to think of things because that's, that's the logic. That's the, the motherboard, if you like, to the external world. We need the brain to be able to come up, you know, make it, make, draw the conclusions and then be able to, through the voice, send them out. But we really kind of. Your brain isn't, isn't the highest vibration in the body, as you say, your highest vibration in terms of frequency. We all vibrate at our own unique frequency, just like our thumbprint is unique. So we had this frequency. The heart is the, the highest frequency, the highest vibration in the body. So, you know, and you know, without going into lots and lots of detail about, about quantum physics and all this kind of thing, it's just like this is going to give you your, this is your compass point, if you like. This is going to give you the best.
Sat nav, if you like. It's a sat nav in your body. And so, you know, people say, oh, you know, you should listen to your intuition more. And it's, and it's true. Because your brain, your logic will try and keep you in an old pattern. If you've, if you, if you've made decisions in a certain way in the past, your brain's gonna make sure you make the same decision again. And if that decision isn't the, wasn't the right decision for you, why on earth are you going to want to do it again? So the only, really the only trusted and reliable source of you making decisions that are good for you, that will work for you, is to drop into your heart and say to yourself, how do I feel about this? Not how do I think about this? What do I think about this? Yes, think about it. But then drop in and go, how do I feel about this right now? Does this Feel right for me.
Because as you say, the heart, the gut, you know, we have these gut feelings. The gut feelings is the message that's the true messenger.
In who you are. But we don't trust it. You know, as humans, that's the biggest gift we can give ourselves is to trust our heart, trust our guts.
So, like, I've got a bit of an insight into all of this because I've done a lot of work on myself and.
But I, but I, but for someone who's new to this, like, this could just sound like absolute gobbledygook to them. What is it, you know, can you, can you try and break down in layman's terms for a predominantly male audience who are technical and filmmakers, and you know that audience pretty well, how do we go about accessing this? Because, because the one thing we have as filmmakers is we're empathic by our intuitive and empathic. We're storytellers. So how can we help, how can we help navigate from that out of the brain into the heart? What are some of the tools or processes that we can use?
So the.
You know, you're probably, probably a lot of, you are gonna, gonna do some sort of fitness, whether it's cycling, you know, whether you go to the gym or whatever. And first off, when you're in that place of exercise.
It feels good. The emotion you feel is exhalation. It's kind of joy. It's okay, you might be working quite hard, but you can feel those hormones, those real feel good emotions. And so doing physical exercise is a great thing to do. But the other thing that I just always share with all of my clients, and I get so much resistance from this and I can understand why that the best form of moving into, exploring how the heart feels is by doing meditation. Now you could be, you don't have to do meditation and sit there in a Zen like state and pretend to be Buddha. You know, there's no hard and fast rules for meditation at all. And I, you know, I. One of my best clients is male, right? He's a guy, he's. He runs a couple of construction firms in Sydney. He is not a meditator. You know, it's something that he's always struggled with. Well, the way that he, he just stops. This is the thing is having the power and the, and the awareness to just when the mind's going crazy is to just stop, stop, Take three or four deep breaths and actually step out of the situation you, you're in. And my client will, will walk, meditate, and walk at the same time so you know, you're not got your eyes closed in this Zen like state, walking up and down the street. But just find, find space, find, go out to nature, take a few deep breaths, close your eyes. You can sit on a park bench, you can walk.
You know, that's often the easiest way to access a form of mindfulness, a form of meditation. Because what happens is, is that the, the brain, the brain gets a chance to kind of slow down. It gets time.
For the chatter to stop. And when you can be present and doing exercise, you're the same, you go cycling. Right. So you have to be very present whilst you're cycling. Yes, you might think of a few things, but predominantly you've got to be focused and being present on riding a bike. And so if you can be in that state, walking around, doing a walking meditation, you, you will by nature find that you are less anxious. It's just, it's just how, how the, the physiology of the body works, if you like.
And the funny thing is, like, we breathe naturally. And what I found when I, because I struggled to get into meditation and I used an app called Headspace to begin with, now I can meditate virtually anywhere at any time by just closing my eyes. But for anyone who's not tried this, it's literally just breathing.
In through the nose, out through the mouth, but very consciously. And when you focus on your breath, it regulates everything in your body and that's when the magic happens. Like we did a session yesterday, I did a session with Sam yesterday and I don't know how long it was, maybe an hour or something. But it's insane how much you can achieve when you go into deep meditation. So obviously you don't just get people into meditation and go, well, there you go, that's your hour.
What happens?
What is going on? Or when you look at me being anxious about something and, and then we do a treatment and then I'm completely different at the end of it. Are you able to sort of explain what's going on?
Well, from my perspective, I can explain how I see it. How you see it and how you feel it is a very individual thing, but it's.
Okay. So just, let's just come back to the whole meditation thing, right? The issue we have as human beings is we have this preconceived notion about what to expect or how something is going to turn out. And I don't know if any, you know, there may be some, some of you guys, some of your audience that have done yoga for example. And, you know, everything takes time to learn. It takes time to.
You know, we have this immediate. We're in society where we have this immediate feeling like as soon as we've. We've received something, we've got it, we're perfect at it, it works. And if it. And if the body doesn't feel like it works, we then throw it out and go, oh, that didn't work, or that wasn't for me, or, you know, so on and so forth. And I think what I see is that.
If we don't know, know enough about something and, you know, natural therapies, healing Reiki, whatever you want to call it, angelic healing, color, he is not yet tangible. It's very much an esoteric thing. And I suppose I work with energy. We are all energy. We are a vibration. And so what happens is that you and I are, as we're talking here now, we're having an exchange in energy. We are reading each other's frequencies. So when it doesn't matter what situation you're in with anybody, but for example, if you come to me, I'm immediately working on you and your energy field because I can read energy, I can pick up how you're feeling. We can all pick up on how people are feeling. Just got to walk into a room and feel people's. Whether they're pissed off, whether they're having a good time, whether they've had a row with somebody. You can feel how they feel. You can feel their emotion. And emotion is energy in motion. So when you're with me, I'm picking up on your energy. And.
With the gift that I have, with what I have available to me, I can get you into a situation where we are shifting your frequency. Meditation is exactly that. You get into a theta state, an alpha state, and it's basically your waves, your energy waves are changing shape.
You know, meditation will help you do that. You can come and see a therapist. A therapist will help you do that. Just walking around in nature and feeling the frequency of nature will give you a shift and a change in frequency straight away.
You know what's interesting here? Something just struck me that because, because, you know, predominantly there are video production companies and filmmakers listening and watching this, this podcast. And it's like when we talk about light, light is a visible spectrum of colors and, and sound is frequency based. So. So light and sound are frequency based. So I think as filmmakers, we understand frequencies. And I think what's interesting is that, like, we did this, this, this session yesterday, and it like I just went into this incredible. I mean, I've done a lot of meditation, so I guess I'm, I'm kind of aware of like how easy it is to drop him, but it's. You sit in what I can only describe a suspended animation for an hour or a lie down and that you. I'm conscious, I'm aware, but I'm, I'm also subconscious. And it's incredible that, that feeling. But something you said to me yesterday, we were walking and you said, you know, we're talking about anxiety and what it was. And you said, anxiety is just fear. And you said, but what's interesting is up to the age of seven, we don't experience anything but happiness and play and joy. Can you, can you talk a bit about that whole idea of fear and anxiety?
So we basically as human beings have. There's two states. We were either in one or the other. So we are either in a state of love or we're in a state of fear. We're never in both at the same time. But when, you know, when we speak about fear, fear is.
We will call that a balloon.
Statement. But behind that could be anything. If we're feeling fearful, it's because we might be anxious about conversation we're about to have. We might be anxious about the, the invoice that needs paying. We might be, you know, anxious about our health. We might, you know, we might also be feeling, you know, something might not go our way and therefore we, we're feeling resentful about the fact that, that we had something happen to us that, that we weren't expecting and you know, somebody's, somebody's.
You know, done something to us that's made us felt either resentful or we've got some blame going on or we're feeling angry. All of those sit under what is basically a fear. It's the fear that comes up because something's about to happen that's going to cause us or the brain, the mind, some problems. So what we want to do is if we're moving and fear is a really low frequency in the body. I don't know what it is. I can't remember. You can look it up, Google it. But it's a low frequency. We want to move to love. Love is the highest frequency, is the frequency of the heart. It's, it's, it's our natural state. When, when we were born, we were born in a natural state. We didn't have any belief systems, any, any issues going on with us. We arrived this sort of beautiful, pure, pure state. You can just see that in children running around. You know, they don't give two hoots about anybody. They're just doing their thing. And so that is basically love, because they're joyful, they're happy. You know, they're smiling that you could. They just. The. The love just oozes out of them. And so we want to try and always get back to this state of love. And there's no quicker way to do that than to, you know, say thanks for things and give gratitude for things. But to drop into the heart, it's like, okay, so what do I love? What am I loving? What is this situation teaching me right now? You know, how can I. How can I see the lessons and love and appreciate the lessons in this thing that's about to happen here that I'm feeling fearful about? I don't know if that's just answered your question, but I've gone on.
Yeah, no, I think it's great. I mean, it really. You know, that idea of, of getting out of your head into your heart is actually about moving away from that state of anxiety and fear. Because you said to me yesterday, you cannot. Fear cannot exist, Anxiety cannot exist, and fear cannot exist in the heart.
Correct? Absolutely. Absolutely. And, you know, we feel so much better when we're coming from a place of love, you know, okay, so we don't always like everybody that we meet or we do business with or we've got a relationship with, but if we can see them and see the situation through the eyes of love and acceptance, then we're gonna. That's gonna help us to make better decisions. We're gonna go, right, okay, you know, you know, I don't actually like this situation, but now. But how can I see the beauty in it? How can I see the love in it? Because then, you know, you're not gonna make rash decisions. The brain wants to make rash decisions. It wants to make egoic decisions that we know. I think you've probably had this conversation before with your. With your viewers, but it's like your IQ drops. You can't make sensible decisions if the brain's firing off. So it's just that, okay, how can I see this through this experience that's going on here through love, acceptance, forgiveness, and thanks for it.
For a start, your frequency is changing. You're not coming. You don't have a fearful frequency in your body. So when you then go into that situation, you're in a frequency of love. You're going to meet that person in the Same kind of frequency, or at least you're going to lift that. If they're low, you're going to lift them up to a same kind of frequency as you, which means that the response you're going to get, the outcome that's going to happen, it's going to be far more favorable for you.
It reminds me of that. I don't know where who came up with it, who said it originally, but it's like I, I found it certainly, you know, I, I, I used to have a very highly charged emotional response to a lot of negative things in my life. And so if a client came back with changes that I felt weren't really reasonable, or I felt like we kind of gone beyond what was reasonable, I'd get really worked up and start ranting to you about this bloody client this and bloody client that. But one thing I learned somewhere on my journey was you cannot control anything outside of how you respond. So you can't control the outcome of any other individual, but you can control how you respond.
Absolutely, absolutely. And you can respond by taking a step back first and going, okay, do I need to respond right now? Do I need to come in with this knee jerk reaction? No. Okay, so I'm going to pause. Okay, so I'm still feeling a bit pissed off and still feeling a bit annoyed. I'm still feeling fear because I might not get paid this week or whatever. That's a risk to me. I'm in a place of fear. I'm in a place of.
Defense. I'm in a defense mechanism. Somebody has wronged me in some way, therefore, this is how I feel it. And you can feel that, that electric charge, it's a negative charge. And then you just bulldozer through something. But the thing is, you're not coming from a place of, obviously you're not coming from a place of, what's the lesson in this? How can I see the joy in this? Even in a bad, you know, everything's yin and yang, right? So if you've got the yang, which is all the, you know, I'm feeling angry and whatever, it's a very masculine, the yin is the feminine. It's like, okay, how can I nurture and get solace in this? Feel, feel okay about this? So I can then step forward.
But the decision.
The responses that you're coming up with are responses that are based in the past.
At some point in the past, somebody's wronged you and you've reacted in a certain way. You're just taking that emotional activity that went on. The energy, emotion that went on at that point, you're bringing it forward and you're using it as if it was happening. Then.
You'Re just carbon copying it at this point. So, you know, the brain, the heart can't. It can't.
Filter things. It can't put things into boxes. It's like, this is like the relationship box. So I feel like this, and this is the work box, and I feel like this. It's all one of the same. So if the triggers happening, it's a reminder of what happened earlier on in your, you know, your years in your world. And it's. It's just bringing it back and it's. And it's happening again because, you know, how often do we have this emotional reaction around things and we think, what just happened there? Where did that come from? Because there's no logic to it. It's not like it's happening. It's not like the experience is happening currently. The experience is happening based on what happened in the past, and you're just bringing it forward. And that's why, you know, energy work, healing, kinesiology, Reiki, what I do. All of these things help you to clear that out of the body. Because we're basically. We are frequency. We're an energetic body. We're organic in the same. Same way as light.
You were talking about light, color, light that moves in a certain way through.
The energy field. Sound does the same. Our bodies are the same. We're just moving through the energy field in the same way that that stuff does.
But, you know, I love that is like, we can't see light unless there's particles passed across it. You can't see a beam of light unless it's dust or powder or something. You can't see sound frequencies. You can hear them. And I just want to say that, you know, certainly in the journey I've been on, for anyone who's listening to this, who's thinking, this sounds like a crock of shit. And the one thing that I would say that is really powerful is that you can heal these previous broken records, if you like, all these. These memories or these instances in the past where you might be like, I was really picked on at school, and for a lot of years, tiny things would trigger me around bullying. I think I'm completely over it now. Like, it's like. But I've done a lot of work. But what I used to do is carry around that sort of, you know, that feeling of being 6 or 7 or 8 or 10 or 15 at school and being bullied and like, and that was, that was starting to show up in weird ways in my life. And so I would suggest anyone who's listening just to kind of be open to the idea of maybe trying some meditation, like even just try, I don't know, the Headspace app or Calm. I mean, what, some, what advice would you give someone who's, who's perhaps not done any of this kind of work? Where should he start?
Well, in terms of meditation, absolutely. Apps, Headspace, Calm. I think there's one called mindfulness as well. So they will give you guided meditations. All you need to do is just stop in the car, switch, you know, turn, turn it on, listen to five or ten minutes of it. Five or ten minutes before you go to bed. You know, this, I think when there's resistance, there's resistance around doing it or so, oh, why am I doing this? You know, it's. The healing journey is not a straightforward one. Right. The brain will want to keep, wants to keep all of us in the status quo. It wants to keep us in exactly the same way that we've always been because then, then we can be in control. When you decide to kind of get to a point where this, there's something in life that, that, that just doesn't feel satisfactory anymore, you know, and I take, let's just take my client as an example. I might be going off left field again. So just forgive me if we just bring it back, but you know, my, my client is a very successful construction businesses. You know, he's fantastic at what he does. He, you know, was incredible. But to him, it's like, what, what else do I need? Well, for a start, he wanted to get bigger contracts. He was, he was stuck in this sort of limit, this middle level limit of, you know, a million dollars or whatever, a couple of million dollars, he wanted to do the 20 million.
He thought he was doing all the right things. He was socializing every week. You know, he was, he was speaking to the right people.
He was always on, he was always out networking.
Doing all the things that you do to hustle in a business. But he was just burning out. He was burning out because he wasn't taking time for himself. And his brain was like, Will Martin, which is what his name is. He wouldn't mind me telling this. I tell his story all the time, but he's like, that's what he was always doing. So his brain was like, well, why do you want to keep, why would you want to do anything? You've been successful to this point doing these things. Why do you want to do anything different? He's like, but something landed one day. He was like, well, I just need to change something. And he didn't actually know what it was. But this is the first point. The first point is when you know that there's something that's not quite right, you will naturally start to go on the search for some support. Meditation might be one. One thing.
And you can do these apps. Absolutely.
The second thing is, you know, I'm going off a tangent, but just. Just coming back to this meditation. There's. If I have clients that say to me, I can't do meditation. I'm too busy, I'm in a rush. Oh, I can't, you know, I can't stop. My brain's always firing off. It's like, it doesn't matter if the brain's always firing off. The point is, you've put yourself in a position, you sat yourself down for 10 minutes, you've broken the rhythm just by stepping out. Just take a few deep breaths, close your eyes, take a few deep breaths. Watch. Watch the breath. I say to my clients, because clients go, well, if I watch my breath, it feels like I'm going to hyperventilate. So there's, you know, all these sorts of excuses come up. We tell ourselves all of these things that happen. It's like, okay, why don't you do this? Just close your eyes and do a body scan. Come start from the top of your head and just scan yourself coming down. Even if that just takes five minutes, you're a step further to understanding and listening and feeling to what's going on inside, and it's the opposite to what's going on outside.
There's so many great points you've raised there. And I think the thing that I would draw with a lot of people, perhaps in video businesses right now is that we get stuck in a place where we go, well, brute force got me to here, so I just need more brute force. And I think what I take from that is that.
You can eat well, you can exercise, you can get enough sleep, you can. You can, you know, read books. But there's this. There's this fifth dimension, if you like, which is this, this. This auric field, this kind of whole. And. And mean, I guess, what do they call it? They call it quantum physics, which, you know, when. And, And I think for anyone who's skeptical, Jorda Spencer has a book called. What's it called?
Becoming Supernatural. And what I love about Joe Dispenza is, he's a medical doctor.
Who is a scientist but also studies quantum physics and is marrying these two things with like proof. And you know, I'm kind of a proof sort of a guy, so I like that sort of thing. But look, Sam, this is obviously, it's obviously a big, a big subject. I think what I wanted to do today was just kind of, you know, introduce this at the beginning of the year. Where can people find out more about you?
So they can. You can find me on My website is samanthalennytherapy.com and you can find me there. I have a YouTube channel as well. Samantha Lenny. There is actually a grounding meditation there, a 10 minute meditation which if you're happy me to put it in the show notes then you know, feel free to, to go and at least try, try 10 minutes of, of grounding because that's, you know, when we're in our head, we're in, in outer space if you like. We want to get down. We want to, want to feel like our feet are firmly rooted to the earth and that will, will do that because as you do that you, you feel less anxious automatically. So let's, let's try that.
Yeah.
Cool. Well, I think it's been a bit weird talking to you because you're only in the next room, but I think we need to go and feed and walk our dogs.
Yeah, there's so much we could talk about, but I'm, yeah, I'm passionate about this. But yeah, feel free to get in touch if you want to ask me any questions. And it's been, yeah, it's been a pleasure to be here. So thank you.
