How to Overcome roadblocks in your Video Business. EP #324 - Den Lennie
8 Dec 2025 · 5 min
This is a podcast episode (Video Business Accelerator, Ep. #324) in which host Den Lennie plays a clip from a live training call to help video-business owners overcome roadblocks. The featured participant, Steve, reports being "too busy"—Den reframes this as a capacity problem that prevents marketing and strategic work, explains the two recurring business problems (no inquiries = marketing problem; too busy = capacity problem that eventually creates a marketing problem), and coaches practical steps: accept the messiness of running a business, use current cashflow to hire (editors, shooters, assistants) to buy back time, trust your instincts for timing, and distinguish temporary busy spells from structural bottlenecks. The episode closes with a CTA to join the community and watch free training.

Hey guys, this week I'm going to show you how to unpick and overcome current roadblocks in your video business. Now, I want to do this by showing you a clip of a live training call that we had in our VBA up level program where we actually started the call and I just asked the question, what are your current roadblocks? And in this example, we're going to talk about getting to a point in your business where you're so busy that you feel like you're letting go of marketing and strategic objectives. And I'm going to share exactly how I coached this client through this process and hopefully it will help you to understand how you can overcome the same things in your business.
Let's kick straight in for early Bird catches a worm. Let's, let's help you guys. What are your current roadblocks? Obstacles, annoying situations. There's always something. I mean, where are you up to? Where are you getting stuck? Where, where are you finding the frustration kicking in?
Being too busy.
Yeah, you've been like flat out, you've been like constantly traveling and.
Yeah, we've been maxed out. It's been great. It's just I haven't been able to spend too much time in the training library.
Yeah.
And it's, I know it's kind of the, a repeat of what I've been doing in the past. Like, I'm not complaining, it's been very profitable and good.
But, but I haven't been the driving force. It's been nothing but requests coming through and me fulfilling those requests. Yeah, great. But they're going to stop at some point, right?
So. Yeah. And look, Steve, you know, at the end of the day, like I say on the opening call, we have to go. We're not here to fuck spiders. Like the training content, the program, the reason that we don't give it like a six month program and then try and renew you, it's like we get it. Like, you know, I've sat in your seat, I've worn your shoes. Work comes in, you got to do it. Like at the end of the day, what we're trying to do is optimize a business that can run without us at some point in the future. But if someone's booking you for work now, for God's sake, don't not take it like, you know, keep cash coming in. There's always one of two distinct problems in a business, okay. Either no inquiries, which is a marketing problem, or I'm just so busy working, I've got no time for marketing, which is a capacity problem, which in turn feeds a marketing problem. Because when it dries up, you're suddenly back to square one and you get that yo, yo, roller coaster.
Exactly.
Those are the two problems you will continually face in your business. I know business is doing half a million dollars a month in different sectors that are still dealing with capacity issues. Not in video. But I have a couple of clients who do over $100,000 a month in video and it's just always a shit show. So I think priming yourself to accept that running a business is messy as fuck at all levels. It's never smooth, easy. Come walk into the office, chill. High five, everyone. Cool office. Sit in director's chair. There's just always something to do. The owner operator is always selling until such times as. And I'm talking. I know there are two current clients who are doing over a million dollars a year US in video production and they are just busting a gut six days a week. There is no substitute for that. So I think just accepting, that's the journey. But understanding that when you've got work going on, that's bringing in cash and cash is fuel. What cash and capital allows you to do is buy your time back. Does that make sense? So when you've got cash and capital and you're really busy, you can afford to hire an editor, which is going to allow you to step back and have a little less pressure on the editing, for example. And then you can hire a second shooter or an assistant. And it means you can just step back from some of that operational stuff. So that's the kind of pathway. But.
There'S never a perfect time to do that. It has to be a conscious decision. And so you kind of get through. I'm a great believer. And just trust your instinct, okay? Your instinct is the thing that's kept you alive this far in life. So, like, don't try and outpace your instinct. If you're instinct saying, I'm going to get through this busy period, nail this work, then breathe, then do that. Because when you've got cash in the bank, you can breathe and relax and then be like, okay, what's my next strategy? What's my next move? The training is always going to be there, right? You guys have invested in something that. G', day, Andrew. G', day, Orville. You've invested in something that's never going away. So never feel like you're under pressure to kind of smash through or please never feel like, oh, I'm behind or I should be further on or Dan's expecting me to be bx, Y and Z. I don't care. I'm here for the long haul. You take it at the pace you can. You can only go at the pace you can.
And yeah, the key here is to really understand, you know, is your immediate bottleneck just simply a busy spell because it's the time of year when you're doing a lot of shoots or is it something else?
So I hope you found that helpful. Now, if you'd like to get involved and maybe come and be part of this free community, you can do so by clicking the link below. It's completely free to join, or if you want to, you can watch our free training.
