The Good, Bad, and Ugly of Habits. (How They Affect Sales) EP #275 - Den Lennie
8 Dec 2025 · 6 min
Podcast episode by Den Lennie (Video Business Accelerator Podcast) discussing how habits—both good and bad—affect sales for video business owners and filmmakers. Key points: many filmmakers avoid sales due to fear of rejection or being 'salesy' and instead form unhelpful habits (e.g., buying gear). Regular selling and disciplined follow-up are presented as the simplest way to solve business problems; practical recommendations include building a sales system, a personal execution routine, scripts/processes, and habit training. The episode also announces an upcoming free community and resources (sales script, habit training).

So, habits. We have good habits and we have bad habits. And we've been talking a lot about sales this week on the how to Scale a Video Business or the Elite Mastermind.
A VBA elite Mastermind. And the recurring theme of those that succeed in business versus those that struggle is their commitment to the habit of sales. Now, it's interesting. We have certain habits that are hardwired into us. You know, we get up in the morning, go to the bathroom, wash our face, brush our teeth.
That is something that is so hardwired that the neural pathways in our brain have wired together to go. That's what we do every day. Day. There's probably certain other habits that you. You go through on a daily basis. And yet there are other habits that we avoid or, or, or tasks that we avoid. So, so one of the things I've observed is people who are anxious or fearful of selling avoid selling. And what they'll do instead is spend. So a lot of filmmakers will spend on gear using their credit cards because you get a hit of endorphins. And if you've got the right gear, you kind of feel good about yourself. But in actual fact, the easiest way to solve all business problems is to sell more. And yet sales is an area in filmmaking that I think a lot of. A lot of people are very fearful of. And I think it's because of the fear of rejection or the fear of feeling like you're being salesy. And so, you know, the, the problem with that is that if you don't sell regularly, then you don't make sales. You don't bring cash into your business, and your business doesn't succeed.
And a client of mine last week was having a bit of a lull in his diary, and he went through all of his open leads and just smashed through them and was. And was absolutely convinced that he'd make three sales that day. So he went through all of his existing leads and followed up and followed up and called and called and won like $30,000 worth of business just by getting on the phone and following up. And so you want to be developing a good habit around, follow up a good habit around.
Making sure you're getting in touch with clients and prospects regularly and you've got a system for it. So the way to do that is to build a system around sales. And for that you need to build a system around personal execution. A system around do you make that time available? You know, one of the things that, that we filmmakers are very good at is the shiny object syndrome. You know, we, we hit a period where something that we want to do gets hard and rather than continue and push through, we withdraw and we go and do something else instead. You know, we go and research a piece of gear or we go and look at the latest aperture 120D or whatever it might be.
When in actual fact the habit that you need to break is the habit of avoiding the uncomfortable stuff. You know, athletes, high class, well performing athletes don't really want to get up and train at 4 in the morning, but they know that if they do, they'll build a habit around it and they'll get into great shape for the event. Entrepreneurs and business owners are the same. Entrepreneurs are not always wanting to do the things they want to do, but they do them anyway because they know that the outcome will benefit them in the long term. So how do you overcome this fear of selling? Well, there's a couple of things you can do. One is you condition yourself by having a script. You condition yourself by having a process. And we're not quite ready to go live yet, but I'm going to be launching a free resource, a free group, a free community, free membership community for listeners of this show. And one of the resources I'm going to give you is a sales script. Is a script that you can use to follow when selling into your communities. Now bear with me a second. I'm going to grab a quick drink of water.
I still got a really bad Covid cough, so I apologize. So I'm going to be releasing this community probably in the next week or so. And if you're on my email list, I'll be sending you an email to invite you to join that. But we're going to put a few different things into that community. I don't want to say too much just now, but one thing we are going to have is a sales script and a sales process to help you overcome that hurdle of sales. The other training I'm going to give you is a training around building better habits because if you can build a better habit around.
Excuse me, using your time more effectively, then you're going to find yourself in a position where you're able to execute at a much higher level. Now, I'm going to keep this really short because I think I'm about to have a coughing fit and I apologize, I still have this really bad Covid cough. But what I'll do, guys is I'll bring you back in probably in the next episode, share a lot more about what's going to be in this community, and I look forward to welcoming you in.
