Why we've been quiet and what's happening next. EP #248 - Shorty
8 Dec 2025 · 10 min
Den Lennie explains why the How to Scale a Video Business Podcast has been quieter: the team reviewed and changed marketing strategy and is building new delivery platforms and programs. Key facts: the podcast has ~250 episodes and over 70,000 downloads; they currently publish two podcast episodes per week but are backing off while they build a new plan. New distribution will prioritize weekly YouTube video (audio becomes the podcast), three emails per week to the list (one podcast lesson, one personal/business story, one customer case study), and paid YouTube/retargeting spend. Product changes: the Foundation will be reworked into an 8-week program aimed at helping freelancers reach a predictable £/$10k/month; the Accelerator continues for scaling to higher monthly revenues; a high-level mastermind (retreats 3 days, four times a year) is being considered. Founder is removing social apps from his phone and using tools like Kill Newsfeed to reduce distraction. Overall emphasis: quality over quantity and clearer pathways for clients at different revenue stages.

Hey, guys, it's Dan here with a shorty for you from the how to Scale a Video Business Podcast. And I wanted to come clean and explain why we've been a bit quiet. We have been completely rethinking our marketing strategy for this year, and we've also been doing a lot of deep dive planning workshops with our VBA members. And so I want to share with you today what our plans are for the year ahead. And hopefully that will give you some insight as to how you can reset your marketing every year and ensure you're doing the right things to get the right results.

Okay, guys, so we have been a bit quiet. We've been a little bit sporadic with our podcast this month, and that is because we are trying some new strategies. We have now downloaded, I think we've had, I think almost 250 episodes of the podcast. We're hitting. We've hit over 70,000 downloads. And we're really pleased with that. You know, and what's really significant is that the. The best quality clients we get are people who've consumed the podcast. We know the podcast is an important part of our marketing strategy, and if you're not ready to get that kind of help, hopefully this show just gives you the stepping stones, some tips to go and take and implement. But of course, the key is implementation. You know, you can sit and listen to dozens and dozens and hundreds of episodes of a podcast, but if you don't actually implement the strategies, make mistakes, get things wrong, then you're simply not going to get the results. And, you know, they say that the definition of madness is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result. So with that in mind, we did a big review of our marketing at the end of last year, and we have just decided to change things up a little bit. We do two episodes a week of this podcast. We pump out an enormous amount of content, and from the feedback we get, you know, you guys really love listening to it. I'm kind of your no bullshit guy. You know, we get the point quick and it's straight talk, and that will be great to some people and others that will just turn them off. And, you know, the good thing is there's plenty of podcasts out there. You can tune into the voice that resonates most with you. But one of the things that I've always done in my marketing is be myself. Because if you be yourself and someone doesn't like it, they're probably not going to become a client. And so it's really important that you stick very squarely to your lane and you share things that really resonate with you rather than trying to make content that you think clients will like. And so one of the things we're doing this year, I'm going to run you through this very briefly, is that we've been backing off the podcast while we put together a new plan. A lot of our work just now is being taken up with building a brand new delivery platform for our members in both the accelerator and the foundation.
And we're also going to be creating potentially a higher level program, a real true mastermind where we'll get together four times a year, three days each in a room, and really create strategies and discuss the finer details of getting you business to a million bucks and beyond. And so what we're going to be doing is changing our marketing. I came off all the social media channels recently and it's been life changing, like just taking it all off my phone. I've got so much more clarity. And there's a great app called Kill Newsfeed, which I now have on Facebook. So when I go into Facebook to look at my groups, I don't see any of the Newsfeed. It's a plugin that you can get from the Chrome store, I think also for Firefox, honestly, it's a game changer. Uh, no Instagram, no Facebook, no LinkedIn, no Twitter, no email on my phone. Every time I pick up my phone, I've only got Messenger. That's it. Um, so I'm getting a lot of time back, which is amazing. And the second thing we're going to be doing is changing the way in which we do the podcast. Now, we haven't completely finalized this. I think we'll probably still do shorties like this as audio only. But our main episode, we're going to go video and we're going to go video on YouTube and we're going to use that because YouTube has such a long tail when it comes to content that there's a great compounding effect by having content on YouTube. And I'm not looking to become a YouTuber, I'm not looking to create tens of thousands of followers. I'm looking to have my message resonate with people like you who listen to this show. So we're going to be sharing snippets from events, snippets from coaching that we do. We're going to be sharing example trainings. We're going to be sharing interviews. I'm going to do them one day a week. So we're going to create a YouTube video once a week. The audio from that will become a podcast. And.
We are going to then send out three emails a week to our email list. And one of those emails is going to be.
You know, to talk about the podcast and share a lesson. Another email is going to be a story from my own life or my own business that I can share that will have some value. And a third email will be a customer case study or a success story. And we're going to go very hard down this organic route. We're going to put some marketing spend behind YouTube ads and some money behind retargeting on Facebook. But we've got a very clear pathway for what we want to achieve this year in terms of numbers, in terms of people, and we are going for quality over quantity. So we want to work with really great businesses who want to scale and achieve six and seven figures, depending on where you're at in the journey. There will be distinct programs for each. And I want to work with great people. And one of the great things about running your own business is you get to set the rules, and if something's not working for you, you get to change it. And I've just seen some really quite incredible success stories grow over the last year inside the VBA and the last couple of years. And I'm like, you know, there's something happening here. There's a pathway, there is a process that when followed, gets these guaranteed results. And so we figured that out. We figured out how you can get to whatever financial number you want through a set of steps. And it's predictable. And so that's really exciting. So I want to take that and take the business owners who want to get to beyond seven figures over a million dollars.
And help them get there faster, accelerate that process. And then for other businesses who are perhaps at the sub, 10,000amonth, how to get from there to 20 or 30 or 40,000amonth, scaling a team, you know, putting some systems in place, having a marketing channel, all of those things take time to execute and take time to figure out. But we have done it multiple times, dozens of times. And so we're in a position to share the roadmap and show the pathway and guide you along it. So that's very exciting for us. And so we're going to be giving away more great value content up front to demonstrate what we can do. And then a certain percentage of people who watch that content will get in touch and want to have a chat, and a certain percentage of them will end up joining one of our programs. That is our business model fully transparent. We have two products, we have the foundation and we have the accelerator. We're going to be changing them slightly, but there'll be very clear pathways depending on where you are at on your journey. So if you're a freelancer at 2 to 5,000amonth, 3 to 5,000amonth, and you want to get scalable, predictable 10 grand a month revenue, then the foundation is going to be the place for you. It's currently a program that we're going to turn into an eight week accelerator program to give you all of the tools you need to get to that 10k a month as soon as physically possible. Because once you get to 10k a month, everything changes. From 10k, it's easy to get to 20 or 30, but getting to that first 10k a month is hard. And so there's certain steps you've got to take. And so we're going to help businesses at that stage do that. And then we're going to take businesses who want to scale from their upwards to, you know, 40, 50 grand a month and then there'll be an option to go higher as well. So that's our plan for the year. That's what we're going to do. So I just wanted to share that with you and let me be excited to roll out more in the coming weeks.
