Why You Need to Be in a Mastermind Group. EP #271 - Den Lennie
8 Dec 2025 · 7 min
Den Lennie explains why video production business owners need a mastermind group. He breaks it down to three things: deep peer relationships, weekly accountability calls and 90-day check-ins that drive action, and faster results than working alone. His clients hit their goals much faster in a group than they would solo.

G', day, guys. It's Dan and I'm in Edinburgh. First time I've been home in almost four years. And I'm here because we are about to kick off the mastermind for this or the second Mastermind event this year for our VBA elite group here at the Scotsman Hotel. And I wanted to talk today about why you need to be in a mastermind group.
Welcome to the Video Business Accelerator Podcast. Each week we uncover the secrets to creating a wildly successful and scalable video production business. So here's why I want to be really direct about this.
The first thing that a business mastermind will do is will get you to your result way faster than if you try to do it yourself. It's as simple as that. I had some feedback on our last event and Sammy, one of our clients, said, you know, in the first three weeks of joining this program, I tripled the amount of money I was charging on my quotes. And within eight months, he doubled his business. And he said, you know what, I could have probably got here on my own, but it would have taken me five years. And he did it in eight months. So when you invest in yourself and you invest in a business mastermind, specifically one that is dedicated to video production, you are getting the benefit of not just my experience, which is almost three decades, but also 30 to 40 other businesses around the world doing what you're doing, who've been where you are, and who are further down the track. And I spoke last week about the importance of taking baby steps. Instead of trying to go from 0 to a million, go from 0 to 10k a month and then go to 15k a month and then 20amonth. Because I guarantee when you go from 5 to 10 to 15 to 20, you'll encounter different problems. And that is one of the major benefits of being in the room at a business mastermind. So in our program, we have weekly calls, but we have quarterly in person events. So there are three or four main. But there's actually more than that. But I'm going to focus on three. Okay? Connection. The connections you make with other video business owners in a room for three days are life changing. You develop really deep friendships, a deep level of understanding, a deep level of compassion, and you understand the challenges that other people are going through. So the connections that are made in the room are literally life changing. And great friendships are built and it's not just the time in the room, it's the time in the coffee breaks, it's the time in the lunch breaks. We sit and break bread together, we go out for dinner together, we hang out, we have a few drinks. It is an opportunity to work on your business as opposed to in your business. And in three days you can literally come away with a strategic plan that can add another couple hundred thousand dollars a year or pounds a year to your business. The next thing of course is you have to implement that. And so being part of a business mastermind means you can come up with the greatest plan in the world. But if you don't implement it, then it's not going to serve you. So implementing that plan is something we not only do in the room, but we also then hold you accountable to weekly in, week out after the event. And when you're accountable to your peers, then a higher degree of accountability kicks in. Now what we also do in our mastermind is we also have quarterly one to one check ins with me and we validate your big picture plan. And then we set an intention and a target for 90 days time. And on that call we actually book in a meeting for 90 days time and we say this is what needs to be done by then. So there's these multiple layers of accountability, but also that group accountability where you can observe others on the same journey or who've been on the journey who are a bit further than you, or you can in fact share your experience with those in the journey who are a bit further behind you. And that combination we've identified as being, you know, different stages of businesses in the same mastermind. Now everyone's doing a certain level and we've split the two masterminds into the up level program and the VBA elite. So if you're doing 2, 2 to 5k a month, then the up level program is going to be likely the ideal place for you. If you're doing probably up to 20k a month, depending on where you're at in your journey and how efficient your business systems are. But if you're at 20k a month or more, then you've already got work coming in. And that's where the VBA elite comes in, with a higher level of discussion and the live events and more one to one support. Because to get your business to 20k a month, that's just a series of things you have to do to get to that stage. But from 20k a month upwards, it's about the subtleties and the shadows and how you get there and how you choose what you do and how you choose what you don't do. So implementation in the room is really important. This week we're going to be focusing on rewriting the script. That's rewriting the script in your mind, rewriting the script about what's possible, and then looking at sales and sales process and sales systems in a very deep, meaningful way. A whole day will be spent on sales process, sales, scripting, sales frameworks, handling objections and how you do it in an elegant way that doesn't feel salesy. And then on day three, we go into the mastermind process, the hot seat process of digging into specific challenges for a given business.
And moving through that in a way that has meaningful impact and change. And then the final thing that a business mastermind does is increases the speed at which you get the result. It's as simple as that. You are investing in access to people and information and a network of business owners who are already doing what you aspire to do. And the big difference between those who embrace a mastermind and invest in it and understand the power of investing in themselves versus those that try and do it themselves is the speed at which they get the results.
We have a tendency to be naive in how long it's going to take us to get to a result. I saw someone recently sharing a book that they were reading on a social media platform and it was like how to get to your agency to £5 million a year. But this person himself was only making a few thousand a month at the time and I think he commented, odd, I'd love to get to six figures. So whilst it's great to read those kind of books, it's almost too far ahead. And so if you try and figure that out for yourself by reading lots of books, you're only going to get so far. And so you want to make sure that you're realistic about the job ahead. And being in a mastermind will help give you clarity on where you should be focusing. And both our programs, the up level program and the elite program, are masterminds. The up level program is a lower cost point because we offer less interaction and one to one with me, so it's more affordable for those businesses in that early stage of growth. But we still have a weekly coaching call which is held by me or one of my team and we can offer all of the guidance and support required to get your business to 15 or 20,000amonth. And so that combination of connection, implementation and speed is what makes a mastermind just so powerful. So make sure you check out our website@denlearning.com have a good read of some of the case studies, watch the videos and if you feel like you're ready for the next stage of your business growth, go and watch our free training and that will give you a good insight as to what you can expect. And meanwhile, I'm going to start continue to prepare for our event this week and I'll check in with you next week and let you know how it went.
