CARE FIRST | Derek 11

Derek Cole walks through a Tuesday morning at his HVAC business and explains why owners shouldn't expect employees to care about the company as much as they do. Instead, managers need to find out what each person actually wants, whether that's travel, money, or career growth, and help them get there.

To even expect the employees of that business to have the same level of care as you is not even reasonable to think about. Hey guys, Derek Cole here. The main problem we see any season is dirt. Check out the backdrop. Yeah, happy Tuesday morning. It's 25 degrees at 7:21. We're fixing to run by the shop and then we have to go to Pond Nurse for our first meeting. Slippery. Watch it. I'm here in Pinehurst for my meeting, and it's always, it's always amazing to me, just 30 miles north and the conditions change so much. I mean, we got snow on the ground, heavy snow on the ground, uh, temperature dropped a few degrees. So it's amazing to me, but I could be in the Minard in Listen. I just want to live forever. You want to bring her— bring him in to make sure, or just send him out? Yeah, I mean, we didn't explain it to him, but we— no, let's just do what we always do right here. Let's just I mean, you're headed for disaster. You just hit it out and just hope for the best. Yvonne, can I see you for a minute, please? Carolina too, because she might be doing it. Actually, get care of her too if you don't mind. We're gonna do something mind-boggling in commercial. Steve is picking up your thermostat. Okay. Isn't that mind-boggling? In commercial, we'll give you 5 minutes of training on this spreadsheet. Well, it's kind of like we talked about yesterday too with the motor. I mean, the guys are just— they just roll, just assume. So we gotta think about how to do it more efficiently. They have delayed you twice. The blower, the control board is not in stock. Well, not here. Okay, thanks. Hey, on this episode we talk about my outdoor unit fan is not running but I still have heat. And I don't know what the freaking other question was. What'd you say? Why is my hip from running kind of crooked? Okay, what's the name? Okay. Hey, on this episode we— What are you doing? Nothing. Nothing. You couldn't lie, she caught you, didn't you? Yeah, I wasn't doing anything. This is my baby. I've heard that about him a few times from a couple people. See, Angel, she said, are you— she said, you're conceited. I said, my mom and everybody told me I was the greatest in the world 5 times a day. I also got a business question which I didn't put on the show, but the question was really about how to get an employee to care about your business as an owner the way you do. And kind of my response is, first of all, let's figure out what that employee wants. What do you want by being here? What is the goal? Is it, you know, what's the dream? Is it to go to Hawaii, to make money, to go on vacations, to have experiences? You gotta find out the why. You gotta find out why that person wants to work for you and why they want to work there. Is it, is it just a job or is it a career? And number 2, never expect an employee to care about your business as much as you do, because when you had that job in school before you opened your business, you didn't care about that business the way you care about your business. It's your business, okay? No one's going to care about it any more than you are. So to even expect the employees of that business to have the same level of care as you is not even reasonable to think about. I mean, you need to focus on what they want, what they need, why they are here, and help them reach their goals, and they will help you reach yours. But first of all, let's get the mindset correct. They're not going to care about your business the same way you do. You gotta find out what that person wants in their life. Why they're here, and then work towards that for you. Because that's the only way you can both win, is first of all, you should care what they want, you should care what their dreams are, and then you should try everything you can to make that happen for them. In turn, them working for you So if you take care of them, they will take care of you.
