Cold Air But Heating | HVAC Tips

Derek Cole explains why heating systems blow cold air at startup, how electric heat feels cooler than gas (95-100°F vs. 110-130°F), and why permits and inspections matter for HVAC work. Carrier's Comfort Heat delays airflow until warm, and compressor blankets quiet noisy outdoor units.

Questions this video answers

Older systems lack a sensor that knows when the air is warm, so they blow cold air until the furnace heats up. Modern systems, like Carrier’s Comfort Heat introduced about 12‑13 years ago, delay airflow until the air reaches a comfortable temperature. There are also aftermarket accessories (e.g., Comfort Guardian) that can warm the air for older units.

Permits and inspections are required by state law and most insurance policies to ensure the work is done by a licensed contractor, meets code and energy standards, and protects the homeowner in case of a claim. A third‑party inspection provides a safety check and verifies compliance with current codes.

Install a compressor blanket on the outdoor unit, which is common on higher‑end models, to dampen sound. If the noise sounds like grinding or rocks, have a technician inspect the compressor for mechanical issues.
