Derek Cole debunks common HVAC myths. Oversized units don't cool faster and make homes feel clammy. Check air filters monthly per Energy Star, and closing vents doesn't save energy, it strains the system.
Every single month (speaker cites Energy Star).
Number one, a bigger unit will cool my home faster. If you go into, like, a courthouse or even a hospital and it kind of feels cold and clammy, it's because they size the units for max capacity. There might be three people in that room. It feels cold and clammy because the unit at that point is too big for the space. Number two, you don't need to change your air filters. I don't know who said that, but that is 100% wrong. You need to check your air filters every single month. According to Energy Star, it's one of the most important things you can do for your system to not have problems. Number three, closing vents will reduce energy cost. No, it will not reduce energy cost because the air is still being produced by the system. What you're doing is actually causing more problems because the motor has to work harder to get the air out.
