Derek Cole explains that needing regular Freon top-ups means your AC has a leak. HVAC systems are closed loops, so refrigerant shouldn't escape. If levels drop, find and fix the leak instead of refilling every few years.

Refrigerant is one of those things that's kind of misunderstood because we get the phone calls quite a bit of folks saying, my AC is not working, it's not blowing out cold air, I need refrigerant, I need a fill-up, I get Freon every couple of years. And that is not normal. You should not need Freon or fill-up every couple years, every year to get your AC to work. I like to refer to this, to the Freon, as, you know, take for example the blood in your body. Your HVAC system is a closed system. Your body is a closed system. You shouldn't be going to the hospital, to the doctor every year or two to get a refill on blood because, uh, you're running low. Uh, your unit is the same way. You shouldn't need refrigerant every couple years unless you're losing refrigerant. So if you're losing refrigerant, you need to fix the leak, find the leak, fix the leak. That way you don't have to keep doing this every couple of years. Same way your body If it's low on blood, it's not going to run the way it should, or you're not going to feel as good as you should because you're running low. Your system is the same way.
