Don't let problems catch you by surprise. Like any mechanical system, your home's HVAC system can develop problems over time. The key to helping prevent costly repairs before they become major ones is catching those issues before they become a problem. First of all, Strange noises and smells, always an indicator something is probably off. One, one of the first signs that something might be wrong with your system is you hear that strange noise or you have that strange smell. Also keep an eye out for kind of, uh, the, the fan running or making a squeaking noise or strange odors, like almost like a burning plastic or a rubber. Now, during the wintertime, when you have a heat pump and the first time the electric heaters come on, you had that kind of burning dust wire smell, that's, that's pretty normal. It's burning off, you know, some of the dust on the, on the wiring. But in the summertime, that smell shouldn't be happening. Um, you shouldn't have that kind of burning odor, burning plastic kind of smell. So watch out for that. Your HVAC system should evenly heat and cool the home. Should— you know, you shouldn't have rooms or spots that it's cooler or warmer than any other side. So Make sure your duct system is good, it's not blocked, there's not furniture over some of the supply grills, there's not furniture over those grills, there's nothing in the duct. And make sure, always make sure, your air filter is changed. And so make sure you have a clean filter. Every month, check or change your filter. Uh, one, one more sign, uh, that you could be having a problem is high energy bills. Um, it may— a unit that's not working properly may have to work harder than usual. So with it working harder, it's obviously going to spend more energy creating the same, doing the same work it's used to. So make sure your system, um, if you see a high electric bill, it could be another sign that the system is having a problem. You know, eventually it's a mechanical system, eventually it's going to wear and tear over time and something is going to happen. Um, that's just the nature of it, but you can do what you can to you know, do preventive maintenance, uh, kind of listen out for, you know, anything making noise. They start feeling hot and cold spots, um, you start noticing higher electric bills, you start seeing these things and noticing these things, it's probably a sign that something is going on and you need to call a professional.
