Derek Cole shows how to find air leaks in your home's ducts. Watch for cool breezes in the attic or under the house when it's hot outside. A pressure test gives you a number: ducts can lose 20 to 30 percent of air, and a professional can measure exactly how much yours leak.

If you're losing any kind of air under the home, in the attic. If you go in your house or in the attic and it feels okay, it's 95 degrees outside, and it's a nice cool breeze under your house, and it's a breeze in your attic, then you have a duct problem. A way you can find out, too is if a technician goes by and does that tune up or does that maintenance. He's going to visually inspect the duct system and can let you know if he sees anything. Another thing we do when people are not sure if they want to go ahead and do a duct sealing or not is we go ahead and send the crew out, do a pressure test on that duct system, which will give us a reading of how much air is being lost. Because according to Energy star, you know, 20 to 30% of your air is being lost from the duct system. So in this area, it's a little bit less because a lot of older systems have duct board, which is actually better as far as sealing than metal duct. It's not healthier, but it is better on that aspect. So you don't see quite that much of a loss of 20 to 30%. But we have seen, you know, 20, 24% loss in some cases. But again, if you're not sure, we can come out, hook up the machine, do a test, and get a digital reading as to where you are.
