EXPLAIN THE WHY | Derek 28

Derek Cole shares his management philosophy: explain the why behind every decision, whether at work or home. He wrote about shifting HVAC culture from command-based to employee-centric, and applies the same principle raising his son. The video cuts between his day at a chamber banquet, coffee runs, and poetic reflections on gratitude and struggle.

We came to the chamber banquet, but we're in the wrong place. They pouring butter. See what I mean? Hey guys, Derek Cole here. The main problem we see any season is dirt. Yo, it's Tuesday, but you probably knew that.
I write the lights out and take the mic out. I got my flow right, right now.
Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa.
I write my life down and with my sight now, I got my hair right somehow.
Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Hey, my life is different than the picture I painted. The pain and deferred the pain, or maybe that's how I drain it, or maybe that's how I contain it till I spill it to you. You wrote me once and said I saved your life. You saved mine too when depression was resting on my conscious like Danny I never second-guessed my sanity. I knew I was crazy, but that crazy was good because that crazy was Tommy. They tried to force the pharmaceuticals to reform and harm me, but I just did me and dove into art. I started training, never seen a place I'm at from the start. But all in all, well, this is just a letter saying thanks. You take the words of imperfections and it's the music it makes.
Sup guys, headed to my first meeting of the day, but me and Skip went to the chamber, Moore County Chamber banquet Friday night, so here's a few little clips we got from that. Chamber banquet time. There'll be a suit suits and ties, and I'm not wearing a suit or a tie. We came to the chamber banquet, but, uh, we're in the wrong place. They partying back there. See what I mean? Are we in the right place? Yeah, I believe we are this time. I think so. I see her name. Yeah, I see her name on this table. Must be us. All right, meeting is over. We are headed to the house. Um, it was a lot of fun. It was good. It was, um, a good time seeing a lot of people. And, um, you know, it's one of those, uh networking chamber events where you could see everybody dressed up and some husbands and wives and spend a little time together. So it was good. Enjoy the darkness. I'll see you later. That was a, that was a good time. But the article I wrote Sunday about caring for your employees. In case you missed that, I'll link it up here in YouTube at the bottom. But I've gotten some feedback from that, and I mean, that's probably the most difficult thing to do if you manage or own your own business, is to make that mental shift into into being really employee, team member focused about their dreams, about their wants, about their needs. I mean, that's not— that is not the mentality in the HVAC industry. For years it was just, you know, the boss came in, told you what to do, you did it, and that was it. But so it's really difficult to make that shift, but something that's really important because as your workforce changes to different, you know, you know, it's not the, not the old generation anymore. We're talking about the millennials and things like that. First of all, it's the right thing to do. I mean, to care about your people, and it's the way this group has been brought up. I mean, they're much more, they're much more apt to say, question, they're more apt to question authority, they're more apt to question decisions. So one thing I do like doing, because I like it for me, is when I make a decision, is to explain the reasoning behind that decision. And yes, you're probably gonna say you don't have to do that, but to me, that's the way I learned. Um, you know, why do I have to rake these leaves? You know, uh, versus saying rake the leaves because I told you so. Uh, tell me the why behind it and all that, because it's a lot more impactful if you have that kind of base versus because I told you so. You know, as a parent, uh, you, you you grew up, I grew up with parents saying, if you said why, your parents would say because I told you so. And it's difficult not to say that sometimes, but even with Brody, you know, when I tell him things and explain it to him, it's a much better outcome than just saying clean up your room because I told you so, or pick up this because I said so. Kind of going that background with the why is much more important, and it's also important for your team and for your employees. So I've gotten some good response from the article, so hopefully you'll check it out. Done with that meeting, headed to grab some coffee and then head to the ambassador meeting at 11. So, uh, got a little bit of downtime, get some work done, and, uh, see how the ads are going.
Will argue enough what they say is real. So accept abuse and then express where you stand. I'm like a single hit away from a spot that I'll never land. They couldn't hurt me until you stop me from saying the things that I've been through. They couldn't hurt me until you stop me from saying the things that I've been through. So let me train myself.
Back in the office, getting some work done, catching up on the meme this morning, uh, make sure me and Skip are lined up on what's going on. And, uh, nothing fancy, just banging out some work.
