Frozen home ac unit fix | Inside 58

A technician diagnoses why a residential AC unit froze up by checking pressure switches and refrigerant levels. He suspects a faulty defrost sensor and manually melts the ice by switching the system to cooling mode. He recommends installing a dual-fuel thermostat to prevent the gas furnace from running during defrost cycles.
What we're doing right now is I've got a code on the board that says low pressure, high pressure, check refrigerant. So what I'm gonna do is I'm actually jump out— what is that— high pressure switch right now. So it's still in a code, so I'm actually reach over here and get the low pressure switch too.

So we're going to check these switches, see if they're open or closed. Switch is closed. Can't get to Okay, I should come home. Going in the defrost. We got two things going on here. I don't think— as hard as the core froze, I don't think we're lower in the freezer. But then we could be. It could be a bad defrost sensor. The board's working, going into defrost, so it may not be getting a signal from the sensor to do it. So once we can get it to unthaw and I can get to that sensor and we'll check it. Yeah, that board could be giving that sensor fault because that cooler completely stopped up. Bro, pressure is going to drop. Temperature drop, pressure drop. Take too much longer. Defrost board doing what it's supposed to do, and I'm thinking it's just this sensor. Like I said, as soon as we get it out of that ice. We'll check it out. What are you doing now? Energize the reversing valve. We're going to put it in cooling mode and, uh, unplug this condenser fan motor when it comes back on after it comes out of delay, and we can manipulate it so we can keep melting the ice off without running a high head pressure on this unit. What does that do? Check my temperatures and it's supposed to check my pressure. And it's supposed to— yeah, see the other one I put on there checking pressures. Flat meter, you see the temperature? All right, what we found, we checked refrigerant pressure, pressure is good, um, sensor is good, defrost sensor, uh, got to looking, we need to order a dual fuel thermostat for this unit in order for to lock the gas out and as well as operation mode for defrost. So we'll get that part ordered and get the customer satisfied.
