Derek Cole explains why your heat pump steams in cold weather. During defrost cycles, frost builds on outdoor coils, so the system reverses to melt it while an indoor heat strip keeps you warm. It's normal, not a malfunction.
This morning, those heat pumps are steaming. It's fine, it's normal. It's called the defrost cycle. When it gets cold like it did last night, and the heat pump is running, it is trying to pull the heat from the air outside. So as it does that, the coals are going to get frost on those. So it's going to reverse cycles, actually turn the AC on to burn that frost off. Now, inside your home turns on the heat strip for the auxiliary heat to make sure you don't get cold. But that steam you see from the heat pump this morning is normal. And don't be alarmed, that is perfectly normal operation. It is the defrost cycle.
