Derek Cole says residential air conditioning systems last 12 to 15 years, depending on installation quality and maintenance. After 15 years, repair costs spike because parts and refrigerants become obsolete. Bi-annual servicing extends the lifespan, and he recommends planning a replacement around the 12-year mark to lock in a warranty.

How many years will my HVAC last? How many years will my AC last? Well, in this area, it's about 12 to 15 is usually the range we're looking at. It could be more, could be less, depends on how it was installed, how it was maintained over the years. But 12 to 15 years is acceptable. Once you start getting into older, you know, past 15 years, you start running into obsolete parts, maybe even obsolete refrigerants or scaled-down refrigerants that cost you an arm and a leg to get a hold of. So 12 to 15 years is is perfectly fine around here. Again, if it was installed great, always maintained, always serviced twice a year, uh, typically you're probably going to be on the upper range of that 12 to 15 years, which is good. That means you got some longevity out of the system. But when you start looking at, you know, Repairs add up and you're spending money to repair the system. It's out of warranty, it's thousands of dollars. It's, it's going to be something next time and then something else and then something else and something else. So when that system starts hitting that 12 to 15 year age range on it, it's time to start looking at probably replacing it, get a fresh parts and labor warranty. That way you have no risk. All the risk is being transferred to the company installing this. So get a good company to install it, get a good company to warranty it, and they'll have your back.
