How to wire and replace your thermostat | Inside 50

A technician replaces a failing thermostat on a 2-wire AC and electric furnace system. He identifies the common wire by measuring 24 volts, connects it with a wire nut, programs the new thermostat for single-stage cooling and electric heat, then tests it by raising the temperature to confirm the heat kicks on.

I knew we need a new thermostat. I mean, this thermostat's not right because I've got it turned to 75 here. It's reading 74 on this thermostat. It's not coming on. I'm going to go ahead and go up with it some more. I'm going up to 80. Nothing happening. Just now By looking at the outside unit thermostat wire coming in here, it's a 2-wire straight AC unit with an electric furnace. But if you noticed, I had to turn that thermostat It says 75 degrees in here, 74. I had to turn it up to like 81 to come on. This is just a straight AC electric furnace, more or less like a conventional heat pump. I mean, a conventional unit, gas unit. Let me see. That's white. Common, blue, yellow, our green, and our white. Green for the fan, white for the heat, yellow for your cooler. It really don't matter which RC and RH you put it on. There's a jumper in the back of the thermostat. Okay, now I've got to figure out what's common here. Red. I guess that yellow is going to be common. So what we do— here's our blue that's going back to our thermostat, which is right here. Let's strip it back a little bit. That's red. I'm gonna do a check between these two. See where I've got 24 volts. Right there. Right there. So that's my common right here. So I just found out what my common was. I'll take this blue, turn it back over here. First put a wire nut on it, won't blow my fuse. Okay, and we said this is our common. Our thermostat should be lit up now. Yep. Okay, now what we're going to do We're programming our thermostat now. Menu. Hold that menu button down. It says programmable. We're going to put it on no, not programmable. Exit. Hold the menu button down for the 522s. That should pop up as far as that. So we're AC. We don't have a two-stage AC, it's just a single-stage AC. AC 1. We'll go to our next. Electric 1. It's our primary source of heat. Next. Next. Go back on it. We'll put it on fast. No auxiliary. We'll put it on fast. Exit out of that. Hit our menu button again. Set our time. What is our time? Uh, 11:08. And today's Tuesday. We're done with that. Exit out. Our time is set, all that good stuff set to 62. We're going to bump it up. Temperature in the house now is 74. Old thermostat still reading 70°, 75°. So that's what was causing our stuff to run the whole So we're going to go up just and verify that everything's working. Heat on. Brass is on now. Okay, we're good.
