Derek Cole of Simmons One Hour Heating Air warns against utility load-management devices installed on HVAC systems. The power company can shut off your AC or heat remotely in exchange for about $30 a year. Cole says he would not have one on his own unit and recounts service calls where customers lost cooling because the utility cut them off.

And I want to talk to you real quick about load management systems, something the power company has talked to you about has tried to sell you on. They pay you 30 bucks a year. In turn, they put a little device on your unit which gives them the authority to turn the power off of your AC and your heat whenever they want. Yesterday we had multiple no AC calls because in this region, the power company turned the power off of these AC units. So they had no AC and they thought it was a problem. Well, the problem was these devices are on it. I don't think it's a great idea, but you gotta make that choice for you and your family. 30 bucks a year really comes down to what you want to do. But I wouldn't have it on mine.
