A short YouTube clip (by Derek Cole) explaining that smart thermostats can control conventional (‘dumb’) HVAC systems because the thermostat typically contains the system "brains." The speaker notes that the most efficient installations have both the thermostat and the HVAC control board be smart and communicate, but confirms a smart thermostat can still work with a dumb HVAC unit.

Can a smart thermostat talk to a dumb H VAC system? Yes. I mean, sure. I mean, smart people talk to me all the time. So the brains of the system is in that thermostat. If you have a smart thermostat, the brains are typically in that unit. Now, the best systems both are smart. The thermostat smart, and the board and that unit smart. And they are talking to each other to be more efficient. But you can have a smart thermostat and a dumb H Vac unit.
