Derek Cole shares three rules to prevent space heater fires: plug directly into a wall outlet, not an extension cord or power strip; keep three feet of clearance around the heater; and place it on a flat, solid surface.
We all love that extra warmth when the cold creeps in. But every year, space heaters cause thousands of fires across the country. First of all, always, always, always plug a space heater directly into the wall. Never use a drop cord. Use a power strip. They're not built to handle that much current. No extension cords, no power strips. Make sure it is three feet of space around the heater so it can breathe. And always keep it on a flat, solid surface. A space heater should make your home more comfortable, not more dangerous.
