Steam and Backup Heat

Derek Cole explains why your heat pump's outdoor unit steams during winter defrost cycles and when backup electric heat kicks in. Below 40°F, the system switches to auxiliary heating to maintain comfort while the refrigerant reverses to melt frost buildup.

Hey, what's up, guys? Derek Cole here. And I just wanted to jump on real quick. And, you know, with these cold evenings and, you know, cold nights, cold mornings, cold days, I wanted to come on and say, if you have a heat pump, if you have electric heat pump in the house, the backup heat is going to come on during this type of weather. And the backup heat or the auxiliary heat really has two purposes. Mainly it's for the defrost cycle, and it's to supplement your heat pump. Anytime it gets below 40 degrees outside, it really, your heat pump really needs help keeping that set point in your house. So the backup heat is there for that reason to supplement the heat pump when it gets this chill outside. And what's going to happen as well is it's going to frost over as it extracts heat from the air outside. The coals out there in the unit are going to frost over it. It has to go into what's called a defrost cycle. So that defrost cycle is actually going to burn or melt the frost off those outdoor coals. And when that happens, steam will rise and your bag of heat will come on. Because actually what's happening is it's reversing the flow of refrigerant, and it's actually going into AC mode. And when that happens, the backup heat comes on or off, auxiliary heat comes on, so you're not cold in the house, and you maintain the set point. So a lot of times you hear, like, a loud noise outside, and then you'll look out the window and see what's going on. You'll see, you know, steam coming up from the outdoor unit, and you think something's wrong. And when it's really just the defrost cycle itself happening. So again, again, in this cold weather, the backup heat, the auxiliary heat, it is going to come on. It is going to activate. It's going to do it for too many reasons to supplement the heat pump, the heat itself. And it's also going to do it when the defrost cycles on. So you don't get cold in the house.
