The Basics: 5 Secrets to Help Prevent Breakdowns (A Secret Revealed)

Derek Cole explains how dirt on AC coils and filters cuts cooling efficiency by up to 20% and strains components toward failure. Regular professional servicing and preventive maintenance checks catch weak capacitors before they fail during heat waves. Download his free PDF at simmonspros.com/5secrets.

Hey, what's up everyone? Uh, Derek Cole here, and I'm so excited. Uh, our newest PDF is out today. Uh, it's called The Basics: 5 Secrets to Help Prevent Breakdowns. Uh, now if you're part of the email group, you will get an email with a direct link to it. Uh, if you're part of the text community, uh, you got a text from me a couple of days ago Uh, so you got your copy, but the rest of you can go to simmonspros.com. It's on our corporate site, simmonspros.com/5secrets. simmonspros.com/5secrets. It's called The Basics: 5 Secrets to Help Prevent Breakdowns. Uh, I wanted to come on and with you, uh, right now. So, uh, one secret I want to share is having your system served. Having your system serviced, that's probably not a, uh, a huge, uh, secret to you guys that have been following for a while because we talk about it a lot and how important it is. But a secret is having your system serviced. Have a professional inspect, service, and clean your HVAC system. So why is that? Important. Um, heating and air is all about heat transfer. So if you think about, uh, going back to early— sorry, I'm on my front porch, so if you hear noise, it's cars on the road. Um, but if you go back to your early days of being in science class, um, you know, there is no cold air or cool air. It's only degrees of heat, right? Sorry, got some notifications, should have turned those off. Um, there's only degrees of heat, uh, so heating and air is, you know, in the wintertime we're bringing heat to the house, in the summertime we're removing heat from the house. So today is like, you know, it was 90, um, so you won't to be cool in the house. So how we do that is by removing the heat from the house. Just like your refrigerator, when you put in room temperature drinks or food, it cools it down because it removes heat from that motorcycle. Sorry, got a busy street in front of me. But it removes heat, so you Your heat pump or gas pack or what you have does the same thing in the AC mode. It removes heat from the home and provides a cool home for you and your family. So to do that, it uses coils. The longer that air sits over that cooling coil, the cooler the air gets, the more heat it can remove from the air. It's the, uh, kind of the same principle as when you're driving in your car. Uh, you know, like today where it's 90-something degrees, it's obviously very warm in the car. You got the AC blasting, it's on high, and then you're, you know, you're going like 45 miles down the road and you turn, turn the fan down a little bit because it's getting a little cooler. And as you turn it down, it feels like it's getting cooler, so you turn the temperature up in the car. Same way with your AC unit at home. The slower the air moves across that coil, the more it can remove heat, the more it can dehumidify, and the, the colder the air feels because it's able to sit on that coil longer than if you have the fan on high. But getting your system serviced is important because those coils, depending on, uh, the age or the make of it, is either made from aluminum or it's made from copper. So those coils transfer heat. So whenever they have the buildup of dirt or debris or or something on those coils, the harder it is for it to remove the heat or transfer the heat. The harder it is to transfer the heat, the harder the components have to work. Uh, for example, the motors, the capacitors. Dirt is the number one killer of AC and furnaces. Excuse me. So our main job is to remove the dirt, right? Because that is the biggest killer. So if you just bought 6 months ago, say, a 14 Series unit, well, it's so thin, the copper and aluminum, those are so thin, the EPA says— not me, the EPA says— 1 20th of an inch of dirt on that evaporator, that coil, can lead to a 20%, up to a 20% efficiency loss. 1/20th of an inch. So when you think about how big an inch is and you slice it up 20 times, that's how a little bit of dirt can affect the efficiency of your unit. So the, the more dirt, the harder it has to work, the more things will go out because they're having to work overtime to overcome what's on that coil. So, uh, that's why you have those challenges with motors and capacitors. Now they can go out for any number of reasons, but you can help prevent a dirt problem by having your system serviced. Dirty coils, dirty filters, dirty blower wheels— all that can cause them to overheat and they'll go out sooner than they would have otherwise. Uh, we went to a house this week with a, you know, a very dirty coil, and that was pretty much the only problem. Um, they were not getting, uh, cool air because the system couldn't breathe because The filter was stopping the air from getting back to the unit, so the system couldn't breathe. It's trying to run a marathon and trying to breathe out of a straw. So what's going to happen? It's going to have a challenge. So you want to make it as easy as possible for the air to get back to the unit and as clean as possible for the air to go across that coil. To cool the air down in the house, you want to make it as easy as possible. Now, maintenance is a preventive measure. It does not mean that your system will never break down or have any kind of a challenge or a problem. Um, there are parts, there are machines, they will break, but you can do everything you can do to make sure it's not a maintenance problem. I had a friend, I think it was 2 weeks ago, they had their unit serviced and checked and cleaned. They're part of the Comfort Club. Um, we changed out a capacitor. It was reading weak. Uh, it wasn't, you know, so much of a dirt problem as, look, the capacitor needs to be changed out. It's I think it's 6, 7, 8 years old. Anyway, the capacitor is reading weak. That's something you can catch on the maintenance because it's something that's reading weak. You can change it. If, if that maintenance wasn't done when it's 95, 100 degrees outside, that capacitor will fail. And then, you know, they're gonna call them with a service call with no AC. But instead replace the capacitor and they're good to go with that part because reading weak. So that's why it's so important to have your system serviced and checked and cleaned and maintained, because those problems can be caught before they become big problems and you have no AC and it's really, really hot outside. Um, so One secret is having your system serviced. It's very important to have it cleaned. Whenever that— how important the cleaning was, but also to check these components like the capacitors and the motors and the boards, and just to make sure everything's working properly. It's kind of, kind of like when you fixing to go on vacation or take a long drive, you know, you get your car serviced and checked out. To make sure you're good to go for that long journey. Well, you want to do that for your AC unit, especially before the summertime, because it's fixing to run a marathon. It's going to be hot. It's not quite humid yet, but it'll get there. It'll be hot and humid, and that unit is going to be running overtime in a marathon, and you want to give it the best chance possible for it to be successful in this long journey of the summer. It comes right to my phone. 910-463-5811. Let me answer a few questions here. And yes, yes, get the maintenance agreement. Good point. Uh, we do have a cover club maintenance agreement, uh, along with the getting the system serviced twice a year, which is the most critical. Uh, it also gets you priority service, uh, discounts on any kind of repair. Uh, and no diagnosis fee unless you choose a time window. Uh, for the mainstream customers, a 1-hour or 2-hour window is extremely discounted, but there's a fee. If you want the, uh, all-day window, uh, which is the most popular, uh, that's $0. $0 to pay to get us out. And if something is wrong, you do get a discount., on that repair as well. So something to take advantage of. But the PDF is free, it's released right now, it's on our corporate site, simmonspros.com/5secrets. simmonspros.com/5secrets.
