In this episode of The Comfort Experts, host Derek Coleman (introducing himself as Derrick Coleman) and HVAC specialist William Skipper discuss dual‑fuel heating and cooling systems. They explain that a dual‑fuel system pairs an electric heat pump with a gas furnace, using the heat pump for milder weather (around 50‑60 °F) and automatically switching to gas when temperatures drop below roughly 35 °F, where heat pumps lose efficiency. The conversation emphasizes that many homeowners are frustrated with high propane (LP) bills and frequent tank refills, and that a dual‑fuel setup can cut gas usage by about 70%, extending tank refill intervals from yearly to every two‑plus years. A customer testimonial is shared to illustrate these savings. The episode closes with a call‑to‑action directing listeners to 1houraircarolinas.com for more information.

Hey, this is Derrick Coleman with Williams Kipper, and welcome to The Comfort Experts. And today we're talking about dual fuel because we get the phone call of, hey, I'm tired of paying the gas bill, tired of paying the LP gas man to come out to my house, I want to go to all electricity., and we're going to talk to you about dual fuel. So William, what is dual fuel?
Dual fuel, well, actually it's the best of both worlds. It's somebody that wants to go, you know, you hear people, I want to go all electric. Really? No, you don't. If you've had gas heat your whole life or the majority of your life and you switch to all electric, now you're not going to be happy. I'm not saying you won't be comfortable, you won't be happy because there is a difference in the heat. Heat pump is going to provide the heat sufficient enough to, you know, raise the temperature to where you want to, but you won't get that hot air out of the vent that you feel when that gas comes on. And once you get used to it, you'll never be able to overcome it with a heat pump. Dual fuel systems give you that heat pump heat on those days that you're heating on the 50-degree days or 60-degree days to where It really— you don't want to burn that gas. It will heat it. You won't feel that cold blow because really you're not that cold in the house to begin with. But it also gives you that gas side for those days that that heat pump can't keep up. And we've talked before that a heat pump, once it gets below 35 degrees or so, a heat pump can't produce enough heat to overcome that cold air and heat your house properly. So what it does is it switches to its gas side. It gives you that hot gas heat that you have had all your life, but you don't have to worry about burning that gas heat on those warmer days. Dual fuel system, people say they want it, they're tired of paying that gas man to come out and fill his LP tank up. With a dual fuel system, most applications will save you about 70% on your gas bill. Because you're not burning that gas heat on those cold, cold days. I'm running a heat pump, which is no more expensive than it would be if you're cooling in the summertime. And I've got that backup when I need it on those real cold days.
Yeah, we've gotten the testimonials quite a few times of, hey, I got a 500-gallon tank. Every year I have to fill it up, but since I went to dual fuel, now it's like every 2 years, almost 2 and a half years. Before I need to fill it up because we're saving— we're using the best of both worlds. Like you said, we're using the heat pump and the gas when it's really needed.
