The Comfort Experts - Electric Heat

Derek Cole and William explain why heat pumps have electric heat strips: they help at freezing temperatures, cover heat loss during defrost cycles, and back up the system if the compressor fails. Running them alone can spike your electric bill to $500 a month, so fix your heat pump fast.

Hey, this is Derrick Cole along with Williams, Kipper and welcome to the Comfort Experts. And today we're talking about emergency heat or auxiliary heat. Now, William, people want to know why these things are in place on their system, especially with a split or package.
Heat pump, well, auxiliary heat, or your electric heat strips and a heat pump. They serve multiple purposes. One is basically to assist the heat pump when the temperatures get so low that a heat pump can't keep up. Another is to overcome defrost. Now, we talked about that in an earlier show, last week's show. I think, Derek, that your auxiliary heat strips, when it goes into defrost, it energizes them to overcome the air conditioning mode that the defrost is doing now. Also, your electric heat strips serve a purpose to help provide heat to you in case you were to have a major failure with a compressor and couldn't get heat from your heat pump. You could go to your thermostat, switch on emergency heat and it would provide heat in the home. Now, most of the time that heat is not going to be sufficient enough to heat the home to 75 degrees, but it's not going to allow the home to, you know, freeze to death in the home. It's also not good on the light bill. So when you do see this situation happen, it is best to go ahead and take care of the repair that needs to be so you won't end up with a $500 light bill. So your heat strips serve multiple purposes, but all of them are there to help you.
Yeah, it is. The good thing about it is it's 100% efficient. I mean, as much heat it produces. The problem is it also runs up.
The light bill is 100% costly.
Yeah. So be careful with that watch that go to a thermostat, you'll see the immersive heat light on or you the auxiliary flashing on your digital thermostat. So pay attention to that, especially on the cold mornings or cold nights. That's really going to back up what your set temperature is.
And most thermostats will have two different types of lights to let you know what that heat strip is doing. If it says auxiliary heat, it's telling you that it's running with that heat pump. If it says emergency heat, then it's running by itself with no compressor. So make sure you know the difference.
