The Comfort Experts - Heat Load

Derek Cole and William Skipper explain why HVAC contractors must do load calculations before sizing a unit. Oversized systems waste money and trap humidity; undersized ones can't keep up. The calculation accounts for windows, insulation, orientation, and doors.
Hey, this is Derrick Cole along with William Skipper and welcome to the Comfort Experts. And today we are talking load analysis, load calcs on your home. So William, why do they need a load calc?
Well, Derrick, load calculations are very important. Anytime you do anything that has to do with your HVAC, you need to make sure you do a load calculation. Whether it is just changing your unit when it's time to change it, whether you've added a room onto your home, or whether you're just building a home, make sure that that contractor that's doing that work does a load calculation for you to make sure that that unit is sized properly. We get calls all year long from customers that say, "It's time to change my unit. I've got a 3-ton. I want a 4-ton." Or, "It's time to change my unit. I got a 4-ton and I really think I need a 5-ton." Okay, they're going big. Yeah, they're going big without really knowing what that calculation would be in that home. If we were to upsize that unit and not know what the calculation was, we could cause some issues with the homeowner that they were unaware of, like high utility bills. It could actually cause humidity issues in the home, which could eventually lead to growth, which nobody wants.
Exactly. I mean, I actually saw some opposite situations in which we had to downsize the unit because it was an older home. They did improvements, you know, double-pane windows, better doors, more insulation. They did things to decrease their load, so we had to downsize the unit.
That's right. And when you do things like that, you need to realize those are all factors when it comes to load calculations. Load calculations are based on windows, what type of windows you got in your home, how much insulation you got in your home, in your attic, in your walls, which way your house faces, what kind of doors you got up. All of those are factors in determining your load. So once you do home improvement like that, when it comes time to change that unit the next time, that load calculation might be different than it was.
Right, so make sure you're getting one done. Make sure the contractor is doing one for you. So you're comfortable in your home the way it sits now. So for more information, go to 1houraircarolinas.com.
