In this episode of The Comfort Experts, host Derek Cole explains the importance of surge protection for residential homes. He outlines common causes of power surges—weather, transformer issues, and power outages—and emphasizes that the average home experiences over 20 minor surges each day. Modern appliances and electronics, such as TVs, DVD players, microwaves, and HVAC equipment, are increasingly sensitive and require stable voltage, making surge protectors valuable. Cole describes readily available surge‑protecting power strips that look like ordinary multi‑plug strips but contain built‑in protection circuitry. He also offers a practical tip: during a power outage, unplug these protectors (and high‑draw appliances) to prevent large “restart” surges when power returns. The segment closes with a brief promotional plug for The Comfort Experts and One Hour Air Carolina.

Hey, and welcome to the Comfort Experts, and today we're talking surge protection for your home. Now, a surge can happen for a number of reasons. It could be weather, it could be a transformer, it could be just a power outage.
The average home receives over 20 power surges per day. So people, it happens. It happens more than you think. A lot of people say, "No, I never had a power surge in a week." Yes, the average home receives them, you know, up to 20 times a day. And that's normal, you know, from the power company side. So be aware, it is happening.
Yeah, because your devices are getting very sensitive. TVs, DVD players, microwaves. Anything that operates on a micro compressor or microprocessor or even a motor, it needs constant voltage. So that's where a surge protector really benefits.
And you can buy decent surge protectors, very good surge protectors in the store every day. They look like your normal everyday power strip with multiple plugs, but they actually serve a purpose, you know, this purpose for surge protection. They have surge protection built into them.. So it's not anything that you've got to actually go out and look and you can actually buy very good surge protectors in the store. Yeah.
Another great tip as well is also unplug these protectors when you have any kind of power outage because AC units, refrigerators, they really pull a lot of amps when they turn back on. So make sure you turn it off that way when the power is restored, plug back in and you're good to go.
