The Comfort Experts - Humidifiers

Derek Cole and William Skipper explain how humidifiers work and why they matter in winter. Humidifiers prevent sinus problems, dry skin, and nosebleeds while protecting wood floors and walls from shrinking and cracking. Steam humidifiers are more popular than fan-powered models because they're more efficient and need less maintenance.

Hey, this is Derrick Coleman with William Skipper and welcome to the Comfort Experts. Today we're talking about humidifiers. Humidifiers kind of have a misunderstanding out there in the market. William, kind of go over what is a humidifier.
Well, a humidifier is a device that you can either have in a room or actually attach to your duct system that provides needed moisture during those cold winter months when the humidity level is down. When we're also using the heat, it will exaggerate drying out the air. What it does is it serves multiple purposes. Home. It can— it helps you health-wise, but it also helps your home's health as well. Dry air and low humidity can cause health issues in the person, in your body, like sinus infection, bloody noses, itchy dry skin, static electricity to where you can shock yourself if you're walking around and touch anything. But it also does damage to the home by drying out, you know, boards, wood, things like that. You can see cracks develop in the wall from low humidity. So a humidifier, when you install that in the home, it gives that boost of moisture that it needs in the home to help you breathe and not have dry sinuses, but it also helps the home stay healthy as well.
It also helps you on those cold days set that temperature a little bit lower because now you have the humidity to go with it, so you don't have to hit, you know, hit 72 or 70. You can actually have humidity, which will make you feel warmer.
That's right.
So you have two different kinds mainly of humidifiers, a fan-powered and a steam humidifier. So what is it— what is the difference in those two kinds?
Well, the fan power is basically what it says. You've got a fan that actually injects water. It blows across either a water tablet where water is running across the screen and it blows and takes mist into the air. You've got a humidifier which actually atomizes the water. It, it puts steam into the air, and your unit, your air conditioning unit or heating unit at that time, will pick up that steam, carry it through the duct system, and disperse it into the home.
Yeah, and obviously the steam humidifiers are much more popular these days.
And they are. I think they're most— much more efficient for you as a part of maintenance and what they do.
