The Comfort Experts - Insulation

Derek Cole and William Skipper explain how poor insulation forces HVAC systems to work two to three times harder. An unsealed thermostat wire hole lets conditioned air escape into the attic, making the thermostat read the wrong temperature and over- or under-cool your home. Sealing attic doors, knee walls, and penetrations cuts energy use and strain on equipment.

Hey, this is Derrick Cole along with William Skipper, and welcome to The Comfort Experts, where we bring you tips every single week on how to save energy in your home. Now this week we're talking about insulation. Now how important is that, William, to the home?
Well, as a homeowner, it's very important to know if your house is insulated properly. It can prevent the outside air, the extreme heat in the summertime, the extreme cold during the winter from infiltrating into your home and causing your system to run 2 to 3 times harder than it normally would. Along with that, also having our attic access doors and your knee walls sealed properly, all the cracks, the outside penetration sealed, can prevent that air from infiltrating as well, Derrick.
Right. One example we've seen of this is going to a home and the thermostat is it's too cold in the home. That thermostat's reading a little bit off. And the challenge with that usually is when they built the home or ran a new wire for that thermostat, they didn't seal the hole going to the attic.
That's right. And what it does is it allows that air to travel down that chase into the back of the thermostat, and it causes the thermostat to read a false reading. And it allows it to run an extended period of time, which can overcondition the home or undercondition the home. Depending on what kind of reading we're getting. Right.
