In this segment of the HVAC advice show "The Comfort Experts," hosts Derek Cole and William J. Skipper discuss two of the most common reasons a residential air‑conditioning unit fails to cool. They first explain that many callers forget to switch the thermostat from heating to cooling mode or do not adjust the temperature set‑point when the season changes, leading technicians to find the system still set for heat. The second issue highlighted is a dirty air filter; over half of their customers neglect to replace or clean the filter every 30 days, which restricts airflow, causes the unit to “struggle to breathe,” and reduces cooling efficiency. The hosts stress that these simple, preventable problems can be addressed by homeowners through regular thermostat checks and filter maintenance, saving time and service costs.

Hello, this is Derrick Cole with Williams Skipper. We are the comfort experts, and today we're talking about tips to help you prevent some of the most common "my unit isn't cooling" problems.
All right, that's right.
So one of the two most common problems. The first one is a thermostat.
Thermostats, yes. One of the most common problems that we have is thermostats and thermostat settings. This time of year, we're coming out of the heating season, going right into the cooling season. Customer calls, says, "I don't have any air conditioning." Technician arrives on scene. One of the first things that he finds is thermostat is still set in the heating mode or the temperature has not been adjusted to the set point that they're normally set with the cooling.
Yeah, and they give us a call and say, hey, my unit's not cooling. Yeah, go out there, cost you money, and something you could have prevented yourself.
Heat means heat, not summertime.
That's right. Another common problem we see is a dirty filter.
Yes, Derek, I would say more than 50% of our customers do not check the filter every 30 days like they need to.
Oh man.
And, and this is a big problem because What does the filter do? It helps the unit breathe.
That's right. Yeah, it keeps trash and chickens and dogs out of the unit so you can properly operate your system.
That's right.
So if it doesn't breathe, it doesn't work, right?
That's right.
So dirty filter, thermostat, the two most common problems we see that you can do at home. Check these things out before you give us a call.
