In this episode of The Comfort Experts, host Derek Cole discusses home surge protection. He explains that power surges can stem from weather, transformer issues, or simple power outages, and notes that the average home experiences up to 20 surges per day. The conversation highlights how modern electronics—TVs, DVD players, microwaves, and appliances with microprocessors or motors—are increasingly sensitive to voltage fluctuations, making surge protectors valuable. The hosts describe typical surge‑protecting power strips, emphasizing that they look like ordinary power strips but contain built‑in protection. Practical advice is offered: during a power outage, unplug surge protectors (especially for high‑amp devices like AC units and refrigerators) and reconnect them only after power is restored, ensuring devices are safeguarded when electricity returns.

Hey, and welcome to The Comfort Experts, and today we're talking surge protection for your home. Now, surge can happen a number of reasons. Could be weather, it could be a transformer, it could be just a power outage.
Derek, the average home receives over 20 power surges per day. So people, it happens. It happens more than you think. A lot of people say, "No, I never had a power surge in a week." Yes, the average home receives them, you know, up to 20 times a day. And that's normal, you know, from the power company side. So be aware, it is happening.
Yeah, because your devices are getting very sensitive. TVs, DVD players, microwaves, anything that operates on a microcompressor or microprocessor or even a motor, it needs constant voltage. So that's where a surge protector really benefits.
And you can buy decent surge protectors, very good surge protectors in the store every day. They look like your normal everyday power strip with multiple plugs.. But they actually serve a purpose, you know, this purpose for surge protection. They have surge protection built into them. So it's not anything that you've got to actually go out and look and you can actually buy very good surge protectors in the store.
Yeah, another great tip as well is also unplug these protectors when you have any kind of power outage because AC units, refrigerators, they really pull a lot of amps when they turn back on. So make sure you turn it off. That way, when the power is restored, plug back in and you're good to go.
