William Skipper, an HVAC professional, explains how ceiling fans create a wind-chill effect that lets you raise your thermostat and still feel cool. Fans cool people, not rooms, so turn them off when you leave. This saves energy without lowering the temperature.
Hey, this is Derrick Cole along with William Skipper, and welcome to the Comfort Experts. Every single week we bring you tips on how you can save energy in your home. Now, William, I get this question quite a few times. It's about ceiling fans. How important are ceiling fans to your home?
Well, in the summertime, ceiling fans are very important. A ceiling fan— running a ceiling fan in your home while you're in the room can actually allow you to raise your temperature on your thermostat slightly and still feel comfortable in the room. And Derek, you can do this because the ceiling fan, what it actually does is it creates a wind chill effect and it makes you sitting in the room feel cooler.
Right, it's very similar to a 70-degree day here in the sun. It's a little warm. You get in the shade, you get a little 15, 20-mile-an-hour breeze, feels a little different, right? That's right.
And Derek, one other quick energy-saving tip. When you leave the room, turn your fan off because fans cool people, not rooms.
