The Comfort Experts - Washing Machine

Derek Cole and William Skipper explain how to keep your washing machine working well. Use the right amount of detergent, not too much, or odors get trapped. Wash most loads cold to save energy, but run warm or hot every third or fourth load to cut through grime. Leave the lid open after each wash to prevent mildew.

Hey, this is Derrick Cole along with William Skipper. Welcome to The Comfort Experts, and today it's all about your washing machine, the thing in your home that works so hard for you every day to keep your clothes clean. Clean. It as well needs to be maintained. So William, what is a good tip to maintain this appliance?
Well, avoid excess detergent. Too much detergent is not good. More does not mean cleaner, Derrick.
I'm guilty. Yes, yes.
Excess suds can hold odors and trap them in between the barrel and can cause odor, bad mildew odors and rank odors out of your washing machine.
Yeah, being guilty, I mean, small load or a t-shirt, you know, I'm putting a whole cap in there.
That's right. And the little squishy packs, doesn't matter if I'm doing a pair of socks or a full load, I'm putting 2 in. Like I said, drop one in, back up and shoot the other one in.
Have you missed— 3-pointer. Have you ever missed behind the washer?
Yes, I have many times. Nobody's looking, take another one out and drop it in, just leave the other one back there.
Another great tip is washing your clothes on cold. It's a great way to save energy. The problem or the challenge for you when you have dirt and grime on those clothes is that you really need to switch to warm or hot water. That way it does come out. And as well, for the washing machine, every third, fourth load, labels permitting, needs to be washed on warm or hot to keep it clean.
And also, when you get through with your loads, leave the lid open, allow the moisture to evaporate. That way you prevent mildew, uh, from growing inside the barrel.
Yeah, that's a good tip because that, that's something I haven't done before. Uh, but also tell you, at least one time a year, inspect your hoses, inspect the valves, the drainage, to make sure everything's working properly. If you notice any cracks or leaks, make sure you call a professional. To get it addressed because it will be causing a problem.
That's right.
