In this episode of The Comfort Experts, hosts Derek Cole and William Skipper explain that the specific HVAC brand a homeowner chooses is far less important than proper installation and ongoing maintenance. They note that most HVAC systems share core components—compressors, circuit boards, and valves—produced by only a few manufacturers, making it difficult to distinguish brands by external appearance. The pivotal factor for system performance is whether the unit is installed according to manufacturer specifications. They illustrate this with a real‑world example of a 3.5‑4 ton split system that was improperly installed with an undersized 5/8" line set, causing the unit to “breathe through a straw” and fail from day one, regardless of brand. The hosts conclude that homeowners should focus on selecting qualified installers and reliable service rather than brand loyalty.

Hey, this is Derrick Cole along with William Skipper, and we are The Comfort Experts, bringing you information for your home for you to make good decisions and save energy. Today we're talking about the equipment, and a lot of the questions we get is, what brand do you carry? And William, why are customers really concerned about what brand it is?
Well, most of the time they're concerned because they're getting information from a family member or a friend, or they see a commercial on TV, or they've had a brand since they've been at the home, the same brand since they've been at the home, and they're looking for someone to replace it with that particular brand. But really and truly today, their brand is really not important.
Yeah, I agree with you because there's basically 2 or 3 compressor manufacturers. Which is the heart of the system.
That's right.
There's only a couple people make the boards, the valves. Everything in the unit is only made by just a few companies. So brand is not really as important as it once was.
That's right. If you take today's equipment and you take the top casing off of them and you set them all out in the yard, more than likely you wouldn't be able to tell which brand's what. And if you really get down and want to know truly about brand and equipment. Uh, Derek, the most important day of a system is the day it was installed. So if you have a system, no matter what brand it is, if you— if it is properly installed and installed to manufacturer specifications, you know, your system's going to be— one is going to be as good as the other.
Exactly. I mean, I'll give you a real-life example. Just down the street from us A customer came in, had a problem. Another company installed the unit, so we went over there, and this is a 3.5, 4-ton unit upstairs, split system, and it's got a 5/8 line set running to it, which is basically the blood vessels for the unit. So this unit is trying to operate breathing out of a straw, basically is what that means. So that— it doesn't matter if that was a major brand, an off-brand, doesn't matter what brand it is, because that unit was doomed —From day one. —From day one.
That's right.
So it's really important who installs it, who's going to take care of it, who's going to take care of you in the future, not so much about what brand it is.
That's correct.
