In this episode of The Comfort Experts, host Derek Cole, joined by William Skipper, provides practical advice on dryer maintenance and safety. They begin by recommending that users separate laundry into fast‑drying (e.g., shirts, khakis) and slow‑drying loads (e.g., towels, jeans, sweaters) to avoid over‑drying and reduce wear. The conversation then turns to dryer sheets, warning that excessive use creates a waxy buildup on lint screens that impairs lint capture; they suggest using only a portion of a sheet per load. They advise regularly cleaning the lint screen with dish‑soap and a brush when it becomes less effective. Lint is highlighted as a highly flammable material; a clogged dryer duct not only reduces efficiency but also poses a serious fire risk. Viewers are urged to clean dryer ducts every two to three months. Finally, they recommend using a rigid metal vent duct rather than a flimsy plastic one to safely vent hot air outside. The segment ends with a brief promotion of the Comfort Experts service and a call to visit 1houraircarinas.com for more information.

Hey, this is Derrick Cole along with William Skipper, and welcome to The Comfort Experts. And today we're talking about your dryer, one of the hardest working machines in your home, and it's actually one of the biggest energy guzzlers in your home. So we got some tips for you to take care of that appliance. And one of them is before drying, it's a good idea to separate your clothes into two groups: the fast drying and the slow drying. Slow drying being sweaters, jeans, towels. Fast drying being like khakis, shirts, you know, things like that. That way you don't over-dry a shirt or a pant. That way that prevents the wear and tear over time. So that's a, that's a great tip to, uh, keep your clothes lasting longer. Yeah.
Also, Derek, dryer sheets. Um, how many people use dryer sheets here? I, I do.
I use the whole one every time.
Yeah. Well, avoid using dryer sheets excessively every, every load. Dryer sheets can create a waxy buildup on lint screens that can prevent the lint screen from actually catching the lint as it's coming through. So if you are set on using a dryer sheet, tear it in half, tear it in quarter, throw it in, but just don't use a whole dryer sheet all the time to kind of prevent that lint catcher from not catching the lint.
Yeah, exactly. And it's always a good idea, speaking of lint screens, is to take that lint screen. And if you start seeing trouble of it catching lint, then go wash it off. Uh, this dishwashing liquid brush, wash it off, clean it off, because that waxy buildup can start preventing things that stick to it.
And Derek, lint is very dangerous. It is a highly flammable product. I mean, it, it's, it's dry, it's dry cotton. That's basically what it is, is dry cotton polyester. And, and A buildup of that lint in your dryer duct can be very dangerous. It can also affect the efficiency that your dryer runs at. If your dryer duct is partially stopped up, it can't release that hot air and exhaust it to the outside, or that moist hot air, and it can cause that dryer to work a lot harder to dry those clothes. But the main thing is health, safety, home safety hazard. That is a fire hazard. Always clean your dryer ducts. 2 to 3, once every 2 to 3 months to make sure that you get that buildup out to prevent that disaster from happening.
Yeah, and you also want to make sure you don't have that flimsy plastic duct. You want a metal hard duct going out of the dryer to outside. That's right. So check us out for more information, 1houraircarolinas.com.
