In this instructional video, Derek Cole highlights the air filter as the most underrated yet critical component of an HVAC system. He cites Energy Star data indicating that regularly changing or checking the filter can save homeowners 5‑15% on energy costs. Cole stresses that filter replacement is a simple DIY task that takes only a few minutes and does not require a professional. By keeping the filter clean, the system draws in crisp, filtered air, operates at peak efficiency, stays cleaner, and enjoys a longer lifespan. He advises viewers to inspect the filter monthly and replace it at least every three months, even if it appears clean, to maintain optimal performance.

The most underrated part of your HVAC system, in my opinion, it is your air filter. If everyone truly understood that Energy Star, they say this: change and checking your filter can save you 5 to 15% on energy. If every homeowner knew that fact would they act differently about their air filter? I believe so. You have something you can do yourself. You don't need a pro to change your filter for you from the filter grille at home. You have something you can do yourself. All it takes is a few minutes and you can save 5 to 15% on energy. Just by doing that on a regular basis, I think if more homeowners knew about this, more homeowners would do it. So, but to me, the most underrated part is the air filter. That's also, in my opinion, one of the most critical parts because your system needs a clean filter so the air that comes in the system is crisp clean air, not under the crawl space and the attic air. It's filtered air, so your system can then operate at peak efficiency, stay clean, and operate at peak levels to get you more energy efficient and make the system last longer. So with all those combined, all this can be turned around and pointed to the air filter. So check, change your air filter every month. There's a bunch of videos here on YouTube of me talking about air filters. Feel free to search, but every month check or change your filter. And for some reason, if it's not dirty, your filter isn't dirty, you haven't used your system a whole lot minimum every 3 months, change that filter. Regardless, every 3 months, change that filter so your system can keep operating at peak levels.
