Understanding Airflow: The Truth About Vents and Diffusers

In this segment, Derek Cole explains how HVAC vents work to condition the exterior walls of a building. Using a smoke test, he shows that air from floor vents rises, hits the ceiling, and then descends along the walls, effectively “attacking” the perimeter to condition it. He argues that plastic diffusers, which disperse air into the middle of a room, disrupt this natural flow and reduce the system’s ability to condition the walls. Consequently, he advises never to close vents or use plastic diffusers, as doing so blocks the HVAC system’s intended function of conditioning the outside walls.
