4 Ways to Fast Track Your Social Media Production

Derek Sivers and Ross Zeiger show how to use Descript's AI to turn long videos into social media clips, posts, and blog articles. They walk through the tool's features for repurposing content to improve SEO and engagement across platforms.
You know you need to be creating content for social media, but it's hard and you have no time. So what can you do? I'm going to teach you how you can use a tool called Descript to quickly create short videos from long ones and then how to easily make written social media content from those videos. And stick around to the end, because the last tip will actually boost your SEO and drive traffic to your website. Let's say you have filmed a long video or recorded a podcast interview. That's awesome. But not everyone wants to sit and watch an hour long conversation. This tool I'm about to show you is a feature called Create Highlights that will quickly create a highlight reel of the best portion of your video for your viewers who just want to see the most interesting three to five minutes out of your whole long video.
So I am now inside of a Descript project. And as you can see, the video on the screen is a 52, almost 53 minute long project. So if I want to get my highlight reel out of this using AI, I can come up to this thing in the top right that says underlord and underlord is all of your AI features. So click on that and you'll get this menu. Down here under the Repurpose section is where you're going to find Create Clips, which we're going to talk about later in this video Create Highlight Reel and a couple other options there. For our purposes, we're going to use Create Highlight Reel. So click on that and it takes you here and this is where this first option is set. The duration of the highlight reel that you want. And typically you're going to want three to five minutes. And it's not going to get exactly five minutes. It's going to be plus or minus a few seconds, but it's going to aim for around five minutes. So I'm just going to leave it on that and then I can choose to put it into one of these layouts. These are like templates that Descript has built. You can also build your own templates and put them in here. And if you want to get my templates, you can download them for free on descriptmastery.com but for now, I'm just going to turn that off. I'm just going to turn off the layout and I'm going to hit submit. And there we go. It created a new composition inside of my project and it named it Highlight Reel of Conversation with Derek Sivers. And this one is only 4 minutes and 37 seconds. And what this did is it Just grabbed the most interesting four and a half minutes out of my entire hour long conversation.
Along the lines of the Create Highlights feature. This next tool is similar but is for people with even shorter attention spans. And this is called Create Clips. This works similar to the Create Highlights feature that we just saw, but we'll create social media clips of around 60 seconds and and give you as many options as you want to choose from so that you can post three to five or however many you want of these shorts for each one of your long videos.
Let's see how it works. Back inside the 53 minute project that I made my highlight reel from, I'm going to come up to the top right to underlord, click on that. I'm going to come down to the repurpose section and click Create Clips. This time when I click on that, there is a number of clips option at the top. So I could type in any number I want here. I'm going to leave it on 5. I can set a clip duration. This is how long, plus or minus again, about 15 to 20 seconds how long each one of those five clips is going to be. And then as before, I can set a layout to put that clip inside of. So I'm just going to go with this first one here. So first option and again you can set your own custom templates and I have a lot of those available for download for free on my website. And then lastly you can put in a topic here and that's something I had from another project, so I'm just going to delete that. This topic prompt is optional, but this is where you could specify something like find an interesting story, find a quotable point that he made, or something like that. And that is what would go into that prompt box. When you're ready, hit submit. And here we go. All of these on the right side are our five clips that it came up with and it gives it a name. So it called this one Living Life Unapologetically a bold take. And then it gives a little summary. So this clip is the most attention grabbing because it presents a blunt and candid perspective, yada yada yada. And then below that tells you how long it is, 34 seconds. And it gives it a little star rating. So it, it puts the ones that it thinks are the best at the top. So it gave this one five stars, the next one it gave four nine stars, et cetera. And you know, always use your human judgment to decide if the ad did well or not. But what you can do is click on one of these. So I'll click on this top one and it puts me into the clip. And now it didn't work perfectly because it zoomed into the middle with this template. And so that was right between me and my guest because it took it out of landscape and put it into portrait mode. So what I can do is come to scene. For example, I'm going to lock it has it put in this gradient layer, so it's got that black gradient on the bottom. So I'm just going to lock that so then I can slide my background and focus on my guest like so, and it automatically put in the captions. You could change this with your show name. And there we go, we have a basic social media clip. And then if I click up here, these are. It created a folder called Clips from and then the name of my project. And you can see I have 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 different social media clips. And so I could go through those, edit them up a little bit and use those for TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, wherever I want to put them.
Next, let's look how to create written social posts for our videos.
And back inside the Descript project yet again, up to Underlord in the top right, yet again. This time we're going to come down to the publish section. It's going to require scrolling down and find the one that says draft a social post. And while I'm here, I just want to point out you can also do YouTube descriptions, you can summarize it, draft a title, all sorts of useful stuff here. But we're going to do draft a social post, and here on the prompts we can choose a style. So where is this going to end up? Is it gonna be a social network like Facebook or is gonna be a professional network like LinkedIn? Choose that here, choose the number that you want to create, the number of posts. So I'm gonna do three. And then if you want, you can prompt it with further details. You can give it examples of your writing tone, your sense of humor or somebody else's writing tone perhaps. And then any custom instructions like keep it simple, don't use emojis, things like that. You can tell it here. I'm going to hit submit and here's the three it came up with. And so I could just simply grab one of these, highlight it, copy it, and then paste that into the social platform. Of course, again, do your own editing, but this takes some of the heavy lifting out of the process for you.
And lastly, I promise to show you how you can use descript to help you with your SEO. Well, as you probably know, SEO is a function of the content that you have on your site.
So.
So what we're going to do now is generate blog articles based off of our videos using, once again, Descript and Underlord.
And yet again, returning to our project, we're going to go up to the top right to Underlord. Should be very familiar by now. Scroll down in here, back to the publish section and just below the one that we just did, the draft a social post. We're going to find draft a blog post. So click on that and you're probably getting the hang of it by now. But you can put in an example. This could be an example of your writing somebody else's writing to let it know the tone, the length, the brevity that you're going for. And then below that, any custom instructions. And these are optional, so you can leave them blank. I usually do. And see what the AI comes up with. And I hit submit and here we go. So it came up with a title. It comes up with blank, bold sections. So it splits it up into sections for you. It gives you the entire summary of this conversation in blog form. And you can see it's written in first person. It uses our I'm, I'm thrilled to share this experience with you earlier this week, yada, yada, yada. And so you could just click this little copy button in the bottom right. That would copy it to your computer's clipboard and then you could paste that onto your blog, your website, or you can click Follow up. And all of these AI tools have the follow up option where that opens up a prompt box and you can give it further instructions like make this more concise, make this shorter. I'm just going to say, and I'll hit submit. And it rewrote the whole thing in a hopefully more concise and shorter version.
Then, now that you have that blog content written, you can publish it to your blog on your website and embed the video you made into the blog article so that your website visitors will also have the option to watch the video, keeping them on your site even longer, which Google loves to see and will reward you with even better search rankings. Now you know how to use Descript to quickly make social media content. But if you want to see my process for batching your work to efficiently make the content in the first place, from scripting to filming to editing, check out this video next.
