Checking out the New Descript - Live Event

A live-streamed walkthrough (June 2024) demonstrating Descript's redesigned UI and new features in version 91 (and patch .0.1). The presenter reviews project/drive changes, templates, the renamed AI suite (“Underlord”), scene vs. layer properties, translation of captions, new Generate/Create Clips workflows, recording/recorder behavior, web app updates, and pricing/promotion for the presenter's own course and tutoring services.
Foreign. Okay. And we're live. So I'm just gonna kill a couple minutes here while I wait for people to join. I wanted to start by showing my website and it's been. The website's been updated quite a bit recently and I'm in the process of creating a brand new course for what I'm going to show you today, which is the latest user interface of descript. So completely new course is in the works and should be done probably by mid next week, probably sometime around the. What would that be like the 12th of June, next Wednesday. And it's going to go over all the new features, all the new user interface. But the reason I'm bringing this up is if you go to my course, which is descriptmastery.com course then, and I'm going to put this in the chat, then you can buy the course at the current price and once the new one's out, you can enroll in that or your membership credentials will transfer over and you'll lock in the current price because the price is going to go up as soon as I release the new course. So be aware of that. And yeah, it's currently $179. I'm going to price the new one at probably 200, maybe 220, haven't decided yet. Somewhere in that range. And you can lock in that price right now if you enroll. Also, I do tutoring, do a ton of tutoring. That's my main service people help hire me to as they're getting started with descript. They can book one session, three sessions or five sessions. And I'm running a special right now where if you do a five session call, you get the sixth one for free and that's currently $500. And then if you just, if you've been using the software for a while, maybe you're pretty comfortable, you've already gotten a good start with it and you just have a quick thing that you're stuck on or you want me to audit your workflow. Then I do these 30 minute quick sessions and those are $80 audio work. And yeah, if you book those, if you click on the Book now buttons, it'll take me take you to your to take you to my calendar so that you can find a time that works for both of us and then we can get on a zoom call. I can do screen sharing, I can do annotations, I can do remote control and walk you through whatever you're stuck on. And I've saved people dozens of hours by just being able to get Shown things and taught how to do things the right way from the start. I also make templates, so if you hire me to create a template, I have some free ones here as well that you can download. But I also create custom ones. $25 a pop. And you just fill out that order form and then I'll make, you know, YouTube intro or outro, different textiles and captions. Whatever your brand is, I can help you create templates for that. And the templates workflow has changed a bit. We could, we can go into that today if you have questions about that. I also do editing and I have a YouTube consulting service where I can help you launch your YouTube channel. You know, best practices on thumbnails and titles and SEO, script writing, all that kind of stuff. Having built this business completely off of YouTube. So with that out of the way, let's get into descript. If you haven't already, you can go to. On a Mac computer in the top left, you go to check for updates and you can Upgrade to version 91. Version 91 is everything I'm going to show you today. And there's even been a patch, so there's 91.0, 0.1 and it just resolves some of the bugs in the initial release. And so the, the drive view looks pretty much the same as it did before. There's a couple little highlight differences. Like this is like a lighter gray and I'm in dark mode. Of course, if you're in light mode, things are going to look different, but only in color, not in positioning or anything like that. But yeah, the, the project's portion is a lighter gray and then it's a darker gray on the outside there. And then when you open up a project and actually let me just glance at these before I move on to see if anything is. You can also toggle into your, your thumbnail view here where you can get a preview of the first frame or whatever frame you've designated of that video. But I don't think much has changed there. So let's just go into a new project. The options here are the same. Remote Recording still says that it's in beta. Quick recording. All those are unchanged. So we'll go to Video Project and here is our first difference. So there's now this Upload a file big giant Upload a File button and you can drag and drop your RAW footage directly into there. You can click on it to browse through your computer and find elements you want to add. You can go to your Project button right here, which takes the place of what used to be the Media Bin. And that was at the top. And notice we don't have any icons at the top anymore in the top middle. So everything is consolidated over here onto the right side. And so what was the Media Bin is now your Projects Project tab. And if you add files, they're going to go in here on the right. And once again, you can drag and drop things in here, or you can click on the add files to browse through your computer and find files that way. Both of those options work. Then this is new. So you can now paste a video directly from YouTube or Giphy and have it go into your project. And I actually haven't used this yet, so we can try that together on this call. And then below that is start writing. This will just take you into the freeform, write your own script mode. You can record. And there's a couple differences with record that we can go into. And that would. That's of course referring to descripts Recorder, where you can record your screen, you can record your webcam and. Or you can record just audio. And then templates, we have. You can just start from a template by clicking that button. Or if you've already pasted something from another project or another scene, you can paste that directly here into your project. So let's try this, this YouTube pasting thing right here. Let me go into my YouTube channel and I'm gonna find a video. So just to show you what I'm doing here, this is the YouTube channel that you're on right now. And there's the video. There's. There's me streaming as we talk. And if I pick one of these, like, this is my most recent video. So if I say share, I copy that link. That's the YouTube link there. Go back to descript and then paste it into here and hit send. Something went wrong. So not off to a good start. Let's see if we can do another video. And feel free as I go. You can drive this conversation. So please drop your questions in the chat, but I'm kind of just going to be testing things out as I go here and in full transparency. I haven't used the new version extensively yet, so little bugs like this I haven't caught yet. And maybe the Descript team hasn't either, apparently. So in theory, you should be able to paste something in there, a link from YouTuber Giphy, and then you'd be able to edit it, but we're unable to do that right now. So let's go into Templates. Let's click browse. Templates. And this looks a little bit different. So we as before we have a drive, a private and a gallery gallery being Descripts built in stuff, the stuff that is built into the app and of course you get the little preview and they have way more options already. I'm seeing a bunch of new templates in here and some of these look pretty nice. So this is like a, like a PowerPoint looking thing with like an intro slide section titles. And so you could open up one of these like this one and you got a wide variety of like multicam option in that style with this like white background with the orange gradient. Or you can do a captions. They have a certain caption style audiogram and so you'd apply any of these. So let's start with, let's start with an audiogram and let's just generate some stuff here. So one big change is captions. We got a comment. New captions are way better too. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, let me, let me pull some of those up. So the thing I was gonna mention is there's a scene tab and a layer tab. And so the layer in this case is the properties of the waveform and the waveform layer is down here on the timeline. And so all of this used to be in one general properties bar before, but now you have a separate one for the layer and, and for the scene. So if I click on the scene, it tells me how long this scene is. So scene number one in this case it's telling me that it's 3.4 seconds. I can make it longer. Just typed in four there and it changed it to four seconds. I can change the background color so there was a white background on there and then I just removed it. Now it's just the default black. And then there's an image. So this is actually an image with a little bit of transparency around it and then captions which I don't have any words in my transcript, so there's nothing to transcribe, but that's where it would go. And let me just write some stuff here. Actually, actually I keep, keep distracting myself into one thing leads into another. I'm going to generate this with underlord. So up here in the top right is underlord. And this was what was previously Ask AI, which is all of descript's AI features including and you can see how they have it categorized here. So including sound good, which is edit for clarity, which if you hover over it, it tells you removes filler words. Digressions blather, all the obvious cuts. There's remove filler words which is essentially the same as. As it was before. Remove retakes, which is if you repeat yourself, it'll find those and then cut out the. The bad takes, shorten word gaps, will find moments where there's no speaking and. And shorten those and add chapters. This is my favorite one. My favorite Ask AI feature, or I gotta get used to saying underlord feature is what will add chapters to your project so that those become your chapters in YouTube as well when you publish there. But then below that there's a look good section and this includes the teleprompter feature which they do still say is in beta. You can. It's not visible right now because I don't have anything to apply it to. I don't have a human in my video. But if you did, you could apply eye contact. And it's now under look good. There's a center active speaker. And this is brand new. This is a net new feature which will actually move the camera around to focus on the subject, the person, if they're moving their head around, then the camera will pan around to follow that speaker. So that's pretty cool. We can test that in a bit. Green screen, that's an old feature, we've had that for a long time. That'll remove your background without actually needing a green screen. Automatic multicam. This one is what used to be called active speakers. So if you have a sequence with multiple speakers, multiple microphones, it'll automatically switch the who's visible on the screen, which video layer is visible based on who's currently speaking and generate an image. This is Dolly. So actually I tried to demonstrate this in the last livestream two weeks ago and it was broken. So let's see if it's working now. Hand drawn image of a dog. And I'll hit submit under Lord is thinking. And this uses OpenAI's Dolly3.3 I believe is the model. And let's see how it does. If it works and they put kind of funny little like hopefully it's worth the wait. Still working. These things take time. Okay, yeah, that's looking good. And then you could just click on it and apply it. And it's just an image layer. So I can move this around and do whatever I want with it. And if you hit done, that's it. But you could also, you know, generate more, more prompts if you wanted. I'll delete that. One cool thing that is brand new is this right here. Translate Captions and I haven't actually used this yet, but I've had probably five people reach out to me in the last few days asking me to do a video about this. So I know this is gonna resonate with a lot of people. And if I'm understanding correctly how it works, you'll have your transcript in English or whatever your original language is, and then you can translate that to any of the other 23 languages in their library. And when you change your transcript, it changes your captions. So that is cool. I've had a lot of requests for people asking how to do that. And there was workarounds, like you could, you could run your transcript through a third party tool like DeepL or something, but it was, it was complicated. So now if this works well, we can do it all right here in descript. And that's awesome. The Find, Highlights and Create Clips has changed. And so right now when I click on Create Clips, what this will do is it'll search through your whole transcript, find sections that would make good social media clips, like maybe it's a short story that one of your subjects was telling or a standalone point, and then it'll identify those and you can tell it how many to identify. So you can type in a number there and then you can set how long you want those clips to be. And here's what's cool, here's what's new. This was, this functionality was already there. What's new is to be able to immediately apply it into a layout. So this first one they have there has four speakers, four different cameras, and so you can have this layout apply to those clips that it finds automatically put it into a new composition, and then you could just publish that to your platform of choice. So pretty awesome capabilities there. Other than that, I think everything is more or less the same. These are more specific because before this was a Ask AI was a very general tool where you could prompt it anything in plain English. But now when you click on one of these, like Edit for clarity, there is no prompt. It just tells you what it's doing. Remove filler words, digressions, blather, and then you hit submit. And then for something like the clips, you choose how many clips you want it to find. So it's just more specific than it used to be. Okay. And then I talked about how scenes and layers are separated now. And both of them, you can see that you have layers, layer options, and you can, as before, you can reposition layers to move things forward and backwards just by clicking and dragging and Inside of scene, you have your background setting, you have effects. So color adjustments, blur, film grain, pixelate, zoom, blur. Nothing new there. In transitions, there are a couple new things here. There's wipe and star wipe. And if you apply one of these, it's the same. It def. It's. It's got a shorter default. All the transitions used to be a one second default, which was way too slow. So this is actually perfect because 0.4 is actually what I always used. Makes me wonder if the Descript team is watching my. My tutorials, but probably not, but. Oh, and some of them are different. Actually looking at the fade is 0.2. I haven't looked at all these. 0.4. 0.4, 0.4, yeah. So everything except fade is 0.4, it looks like, which is perfect. That's a. That's in my opinion the most natural length of time for those transitions. And then record. Okay, so this is mostly the same. And you. So as before, you pick whether you want audio only, camera or screen, which is camera, audio and screen. But what's different is you used to have an arrow right here that said put into a new layer or put into a script layer. Now it's just one button that says record into script. And so sorry, it's not always record into script. Notice when I have a selection. So I just, I just made this. So it's highlighted in blue. I just selected it. Or if you had words in your transcript, you could select that. It uses smart. It uses AI to predict what you want it to do. So if you have a selection, it knows that you want to replace that selection. If you don't have something selected, then it defaults to putting it into the script. So yeah, so it's just be aware of that that you have to be a little bit more intentional than when you could just click add new layer or add into script. And then there's now an elements button. And this is kind of combining what was shapes text. We have our annotations. These used to be templates. So it kind of put all these into one place. And then we have a couple new things here, like the hollowed out shapes. So there's like filled in shapes and then hollowed out shapes and then they split out text, which would be like static text that is unchanging and then dynamic text, which is something like the timer where it'll count up as your project is. Is going up. There's title, where it'll just take the title of your composition and make the text layer say that marker which will take the marker that the current portion of the video is in and label it as such. And then the speaker, which, if you're changing active speakers, it'll display the name of the currently active speaker. And then waveform that's unchanged. Just a little bit cleaner layout where they're all in one one line versus having to apply the waveform and then change it to one of these different types, either a line, circle, ring or wave. And then, yeah, like I said, these were. These are templates before and now they're under the elements section. So annotations, overlays, which are things like glitches, these plastic wrap, confetti. And the frames as well are under elements. So you got like an iPhone frame, pixel frame, iPad frame, that type of thing in captions. So this is what somebody mentioned in the comments. A huge number of templates in here now, which is great. You got some that are skewed, they're tilted a little bit. Most of them are flat, they're at zero degrees. But they have different things. Like this one comes with a audiogram. You can see the. The audiogram behind it. This one has the karaoke effect with purple font as the active word. And these are all, of course, customizable. So you can, you can use these as a starting point. You apply it, and then you can change the colors of the text, you can change the font style, the size, all that type of stuff. But it's cool that we have these starting points. This one has a waveform under it and very cool. Still much more limited than something like Cap cut. I don't know if you've ever messed around with the captions and cap cut, but there's some incredible things you can do with other tools. But descripts getting better. There's more. There's. There's a couple more things we can do now. So media. So this one is still a bit of an adjustment for me because before the Media bin was all of our files that we had used in our project. Now, media refers to descripts stuff. So there's stock video, there are Giphy GIFs, the stock images, which don't appear to be loading right now. There's nothing in there. Maybe the system's down for unsplash or. Oh, no, unsplash is down here. But anyways. Yeah, so you got all these. And then as before, there's a search bar, so you can just type in there whatever you're looking for, and it will find something on topic. And then below that, oh, and I should say that's only visual media. So again, videos, images, GIFs, music is now a separate thing which is at the very bottom here. And you have a music category and a sound effects category and those also don't appear to be loading. Normally there should be previews like under that and you should be able to see all the different music files. But for some reason it's not loading right now. Maybe their system is down and if I. One thing I want to point out is if I collapse this. Oh, maybe I can't even collapse it that small. I've had it collapsed where I cannot see the media and the music. It'll collapse them into a button that just says more. And so you have to click on that to be able to see these. So if you can't see these buttons right now, you'll have to expand your window and then you'll be able to see those. So that is it for what's going on in the properties bar. Now this thing in the top right is kind of cool. It's a move in the right direction because up until now all we've had in descript is this view right here where you have your canvas, you have your transcript, and you have your timeline down below. With this button in the top right. You can change these up a bit. So this is the stacked view where you have your canvas up top, you have your transcript in the middle, and then you have your timeline down below and then you have your canvas only, which we had before. And that's where it just makes your canvas full screen. And then you can just click it again and toggle back to side by side. One thing I've been really wanting in descript that other editors have is a pop out window where you could pop out this canvas and for example, put it on another monitor and then just do all your editing on one screen and then all your review on another screen. But we're not there yet. So also the timeline is different. We got a couple different ways that these layers look. They're a little rounder. We got a preview with the images, they're different sizes. So the image is bigger than the title layer and the waveform layer. Those are very thin. And obviously there's nothing to preview with those, so there's no preview. But with an image there is. And then if you click on this button that says layer size, it's currently on default, but you can make them large and you can see it just expanded it a bit more to make it that much more visible. And the other thing that's cool is you can scroll up and down in this layer. So hang on like this. And I only have three layers. But you could imagine if you had a dozen layers it before you just had to resize this thing until you could see them all, which is really tedious. But now you could just have it be really small like this and then you could just scroll through all of your layers to find the needle in the haystack if you have 12, 12 different layers going on. So let's demonstrate some stuff here. I'm going to go into underlord. I'm going to say I'm going to have it write some stuff, write a script and there's some different stuff here. So again before it was just like a plain prompt that had it was pre filled. It would say like write me a script about dot, dot dot and make it dot, dot, dot words long or something like that. But now you have more. It's more of an informed version where it's telling you what's the starting point. Add any notes, topics and ideas, add a tone, add the audience and then the length. You still have the length option and any examples of like the style or tone and then any custom instructions. And the only thing that's required here is the starting point. So let me have it write a script about YouTube livestream best practices and I'll just leave everything else the same and I'll hit submit and that was super quick. Just needed a second to think about it. I assume this is using chat GPT4O, which is the latest version of chat GPT and it's, it's faster, it's better than the previous versions. So I assume that's what they're using and I could read through this, see if it's what I want. If I, if I don't, I could say follow up, which would give me a chance to prompt it again and refine the prompt that it that generated this. I could add it to a new composition or I can just add it to this script, which is what I'm going to do. And there it is. And then I'm going to turn this into a spoken word. So I'm going to add a speaker, I'm going to do my own voice and yeah. Hey Jim, thanks for joining. If you have any questions, feel free to drop them in the chat. But I'm kind of just running through things that are new and different in the, in the software. So yeah, generating this, I'll give this a moment to finish loading. But if I play this, let's Take a look at the captions now. And I don't love those because I can't see the. The non active word. But if I change the background, which again is now under scene. So I'll go to scene, I'll hit plus. And there we go. Now we can see the text and I could do like, let's do like a little different color there. Something like that. Welcome everyone. Today we're diving into the best practices and I don't know if you can hear that through the live stream, but it's now got the audio. And so it's turning those audio waveforms into this, this waveform that you see here. And I can change how thick the lines are. I can change it from lines to circle, to ring to wave, et cetera, all that normal stuff. And actually this bar is a little bit different. This is. This wasn't here before. This was all in the properties bar, which is now. Would now be under layers. So under layers I could go to line and then I could change those properties here as well. Like the color would be the fill, the size would be. I think that's the. Let me see, that's the thickness of those lines. The fidelity is how many lines there are, how detailed those lines are, and the magnitude is how big those lines are. And then you can mirror it so that it looks like that mirrors it around the X axis. But I'm just going to leave it like that. And again, this was starting from one of descripts new templates. So yeah, you can see how that all works. What else? Any questions? See, we got a few people on the call. What else is new? So here at the top. Oh, so the question is, is there a way to have underlord add video or images automatically once you complete the writing? So are you asking with generating. So like from here, having it automatically insert images. There's not from the write a script option, but the way that you could do that is something like the create clips. And let's see how this will work now. So I showed this briefly earlier, but this will look through the video to find clips to post on social media. So let me have it. Find two. Let me make them 20 seconds long and then I'm going to automatically give it a layout. And sorry, this isn't really answering your question because this won't add images. I don't. I don't think there is a way to do that yet. But what this will do is it'll take my video and automatically apply this layout and I can do one of These preset layouts here. Or I could browse through my templates, including descripts templates. Like I could do one of these audiograms or social media ones here. Like let's do, do that one. And then I could say submit and it's thinking and let's see what it came up with. Okay, so first of all, notice it created a. If I click on my compositions here. Untitled was my first one that we've been on this whole time. And then it created a folder called Clips from Untitled. And then inside of that it put the two clips that it generated. And this is what it came up with. It used that template image and then obviously has my particular script in there. And then the second clip, same thing, it's just below that. And so you could have your own template in there and then make something from that. So you're asking, I saw where you can add chapters but not video or images to make a YouTube video from the written form. Yeah. So I don't believe there's an automated way to do that yet. Let me think about this. Yeah, I'm not aware of like you might know some of these other AI tools like Pictory or I think video is one vid IO where you feed it a audio clip and it'll generate B roll to make it to fill it out with a visual component. And like in video does it in video. Is that a tool? Yeah, I think I know there's other tools that do that, but descript isn't quite there yet. Now what you could do is chop this up into scenes or without even making scenes, you just highlight something. And so I'm talking about live streaming and I could say add layer and I could say videos and I could say live stream and then I could click on that and it only added it to that part that I had selected. And so yeah, that's, that's the easiest way that I would do it is just like take each sentence, whatever the topic of that particular sentence is, add layer. You could add your own video and images here or you could add one of their built in ones and then just rinse and repeat throughout the video to kind of welcome everyone. Today we're diving into the best create your own video in that way. So asking how did I do that again? So yeah, basically you need to create a scene out of whatever you want to create that visual component, wherever you want to add that visual component. So if I select this part that says first, let's talk about preparation. Good planning is half the battle. So I Could just select that sentence and then with it selected, this menu pops up and well, there's an Ask underlord. Let's check this out. It just opens up this menu. So same features there, but with it selected, if you hit add layer, then you can go into picking a file out of your media bin which they now call project files. I gotta change my vocabulary. Or you can check videos, which is their videos like their, their B roll. And then I could say type in planning as the topic and it's this guy holding up a chart so I can click on that and then it automatically creates a scene, it adds a slash before and after and then just fills it in with that video, fills in that scene. So that's how I would probably do that. It's a little bit more manual than some of those automated tools, those ones that use AI to do it. But yeah, I think that's probably the easiest way for now. What else can we talk about? So just to go into, my favorite, this is my favorite Ask AI feature is Add chapters. And by default the number is auto. But you could change this to like five, for example. This is a two minute video, it's one minute 59 seconds. So actually I'm going to do like three chapters. It's not going to be many. And then I hit submit and this first thing that says introduction to YouTube live streaming, that's going to become a marker which when you export this or publish it to YouTube will become a chapter. But if I, if I like these, I can say add to script. And then you can see here on the left side in bold, introduction to YouTube live streaming. And then when I change topics it says preparation and technical setup, engagement and post stream analysis. And those are chapters which if I click right here, I can scroll to those points. So these are for internal navigation. But also the main reason I like them is if I publish and I go to YouTube, they're right here. These become your chapters in a YouTube video when you publish there. So that is the AI feature I use the most in Descript, aside from Studio sound and eye contact and that type of stuff. So the question is, I wonder if you could upload your own media and add it to the video. Yes, you can. It'll be the same process. So if I select a sentence like I'll select this next sentence that says schedule your live stream ahead of time and give your audience a heads up. Same process. With it selected, you can hit add layer. And then if you go back and then you go into files, you could add files which would browse through your computer and you could find anything on your computer or you can drag and drop something in there. Let me see if I have something I could add here. I'm just going to add an image that I have. Convenient. So I'm just holding. This is just a dot PNG image and I just drop it in there and then I click on it and I say add new layer and same thing. It just became a new layer on top of what I had selected. So yeah, you can use your own content or you can use descripts. Both work. Let's see here. Oh, let's try out the translation tool. So if I go back and I now have some words in here and this might not work because I haven't converted it to audio yet, but let's see what happens. Translate to. And I'm going to translate it to Spanish. I'm assuming Spanish is probably the second most accurate language in its library just based on the number of speakers. Oh, so this is super cool. Check this out. So it's got the original on the left side and it's broken down in about 12 to 14 second chunks and then the Spanish translation on the right side. And so welcome everyone. Today we're diving. When I click play, I don't know if you can hear that through the live stream, but it's still playing in English. But if I hit. Done. Let me try that again. It didn't. It didn't change it. Let me see. Ah, okay, wait, hang on. Opened translation review. So I'm not totally sure how to use this because there's not like an apply to script. It's to the original composition. I'm not sure how to use this other than I'm sure I could export this as a transcript. I was expecting this would replace my transcript with the other language. And let me see here. Regenerate transcript, translation, copy, link, export. So I guess when you export it you can. Oh, it does take me into the. Oh yeah. Okay, so look at this. So in the export you can export original or Spanish and then you can export the video, the audio, the transcript or the subtitles. So then you could up. You could translate it to every language, export all the subtitles, upload all of those to YouTube and then you would have maximum global reach with all those different languages. Let's try this. Let's do a export in Spanish and let's see what happens. And again, this might not work completely correctly because I haven't converted this to audio, which I can talk about. So if you Notice my words that I had the AI generate are in blue. And then I turned it into using my AI speaker voice. This one called Ross 2.0 podmic. It's essentially in draft mode because it's still blue. So there's certain things that I can't do with it. Like I can't resize it. If. You see, there's no. Usually at the border of every scene, there's. You get that bracket where you can extend the scene or shorten it. I can't do that when it's in draft mode. But if I click this button, I hover over the start of a scene and I click the button that says convert to audio, you can see it turned white on my transcript. That means it's now like an actual audio file. It's out of that draft mode, I call it. And so now I can. I have that bracket and I can shorten it. I can click on the words to change to edit the. And create gap clips. So it's treated like any other audio clip. But the essential first step is to click that Convert to audio. And that's what I'm saying might cause an issue with this translation here. So let's see what happened. I'm opening it now. Just finished the export. So here it is. This is the Spanish translation that I just made. Welcome, everyone. Today we're. Okay, so the audio is still English. So that part didn't. Didn't translate. But check that out for YouTube live streaming, whether you're a newbie or so. That's cool. And then the other thing I could see where this would be really useful is exporting the transcript. You could change it. You could export as a word doc, as a plain text markdown, etc. And then you could pop that onto your blog. You could have like a slash espanol version of your website, and then that's where that could go. And actually. Okay, so now that I've converted this to audio, I've gotten it out of draft mode. Let me try that again and see if it did translate, because maybe it did. We're figuring this out together. And if anyone has any use cases, if you want me to try anything, just drop it in the chat and I can try it here in real time. I've been getting a lot of requests for people asking, how do I translate it to Dutch, how do I translate it to Chinese? How do I. So this is awesome. This is like, this is super cool and it's gonna benefit a lot of people. While I wait for that to download what else? Oh, you know what I should mention the web browser is now officially out of. The browser version of Descript is now officially out of beta. So up until now, if I go to web. Descript.com There was a beta stamp here in the top left, and it's now out of beta. So that's great. And then it's. I'm not going to show that because that's somebody else's drive. I don't want to ruin anyone's privacy there. So the. It's out of beta and it's fully featured, so you can record using it. Now you can do webcam recording, screen recording. Um, the one limitation that I have run into is you can only upload 5 gigabyte files into the web browser. So it's still necessary to have the web or the desktop app if you're working with big files. If you're not. Okay, everyone, today we're diving into Not a consideration, but I was listening. It's still in English, so it did not translate the spoken word into Spanish. That's okay. I'll keep playing around with it. There's probably other ways to do it. Like, I could take the transcript, move it into the transcript for the video, and then apply the AI voice to that, and then I would have a Spanish video. So, yeah, so check out the web version. It's much improved and they're even saying they recommend it over the desktop app, which is the opposite. Which is the opposite of. Up until now, I've always told clients to go with the desktop app, but I think I'm gonna have to change my recommendation here soon. So in the. In the comments, someone's asking how much space is 5G for comparison sake. So it's. I don't have a good benchmark, but I can tell you that I've been working with some 1080p video that's like 60 frames per second. It depends on the frame rate as well. 60 frames per second, 1080p video, and it takes up like 15 gigabytes for an hour and a half. And if you're at 1080p, 30 frames per second, which is probably the default of most cameras. It's a pretty common setting. It's probably like 8 gigabytes, 5 to 8 gigabytes per hour. I'm not sure. I'm kind of just guessing there. But yeah, I'd say if you're up over an hour, you're probably. You're. You're going to be over 5, 5 gigs. If you're under half an hour, you're probably not. Probably not. Probably. Okay, so you could always clip up the video into smaller chunks as well and then upload them that way. And if you record using descript built in recorder, then you probably, you can bypass that restriction because it'll just go straight into your descript drive. Yeah. 15 to 20 minutes. 15 to 20 minutes at 4K. If you're shooting at 4K, might be pushing it. Let me, let me see if there's like a rule of thumb on this or something. How big is a 15 gigabyte video at 1080p? Or I should say how long? How long? So YouTube video says just 1 1/2 gigabyte of data is equivalent to 1 hour of 1080p. 15 gigabyte data size. Yeah, 1080 is great for most, most purposes. 4K gets unwieldy, but yeah, I'm going too deep on this. 15 to 20 minutes, you should be fine. I've never run into issues with those files being too big. So yeah, that's the biggest limitation I found with the browser and the browser, if you have a slow computer, if your desktop is slow, then you'll benefit from the browser because it uses descripts servers and processors to do all the heavy lifting. But you also need fast Internet. So if your Internet's slow, then description will be slow no matter what because it relies on the Internet for all this AI stuff. So yeah, just be aware of that. Get the fastest Internet that you can afford if you don't want to get frustrated. Let's see. Yeah, I guess the other thing I can mention is in the top left, the return to the Project view is a home button. Now before it was that D logo and it was kind of, it was kind of confusing, people didn't really know it was a button. But now you can just click the home button and it takes you back here. And, and if I go back into the project, the menu is now these three lines and then the menu is identical as it was before. File, edit, view, playback, etc. I guess it's not identical because there is the Quick actions which used to be on the transcript. It was at the top of your transcript, but now it's here under this menu. And then it puts a pop up right here which has shortcuts to remove filler words, shorten word gaps, which these were more or less what was in the quick actions before. But it just looks a little bit different. And then you can go into Ask Underlord or Search in Script. That's super important. This is kind of a. The search and script part. I feel like the UI could be better for that. Like maybe if the search was right there, but it is in fact right here, number four on the list. And so if you wanted to find a specific word, you click on that and then you say type in Live stream. It found 18 instances of it. And the search functionality is pretty much the same where it pops up all the instances over here along with a timestamp. So you could quickly scroll through that point during the live stream engagement. Plan out your live stream. What's going on with those? Yeah, what else here? Comment functionality is pretty much the same. You can leave a comment at a specific timestamp and then you can communicate with your editors, with anyone else that's collaborating on these projects with you. The timeline tools are the same. You have your select tool, blade tool, range tool, slip tool and hand tool. If anyone has questions about that, you can put in the chat. We can talk about those. Yeah, what else? Oh, you know what, you know what a big one is? If I click on a element, so I clicked on this waveform, there's something new down here, this thing that says selected in and it's defaulted to current scene, but I can also select all scenes. So you might have run into this before in the old version of Descript where you made a change to something. So for example, let's say I move the waveform over here. Well, if I do that, it's only going to make that change in this scene. And all the other scenes where this, this element overlaps into will be looking how they were before. So if I go into the previous scene. Oh, and I covered up the waveform there. Hang on, let me delete this layer. So there's the layer back where it originally started. So now I can click on this and I can say select in all scenes and then wherever I move makes that change in every scene that that layer exists. So, question in the chat. How long until the new course is ready? I'm hoping to have it published by Wednesday of next week. I've been, I got the outline ready. I am writing scripts, planning it. I've got some new ideas for it. It's not going to be just a linear one size fits all course like it was before. I'm going to have paths. So there's going to be like, there's going to be like the basics which will be like apply to everyone, but then it's going to branch off into paths. So there's going to be like A course for. And it'll be one, one product. Like you just, you just buy it once. You don't have to like buy multiple things, but you can choose what's relevant to you. So if you want to descript for podcasters, then you can take that, that path and it'll talk about podcast, audio only, specific type of stuff. Descript for YouTubers, descript for course creators. And that's kind of the idea with the new course. And I opened this. Thank you for bringing that up. I opened this call with a pitch which is that if you buy the course now, you can lock in the current price and you'll get updated to the new version when it's out. But then I'm going to raise the price with the new course. So currently 1 79. And it's going to bump up a bit when I, when I release it. So yeah. And please, if you have ideas for the course, I'd love to hear them as well. If there's something you, if you're already a student of my course and there's something missing, let me know and I'll be sure to add that. But yeah, it's going to be a, it's gonna be a lot different, a lot more, a lot more to it than there is even now. And let's see, anything else that any last minute questions or anything I can cover. I talked about the new compositions or they're up here in the top middle now. And then again, I didn't explicitly mention this, but that little translation thing at the top there, because I made the Spanish translation that popped up and I assume if I made other translations like you translate captions. Let's translate this to Dutch, hit submit and there's the Dutch version. I'll hit done. And then if I hit this translate button again, there's my Dutch option. Done. There's my Spanish option. So I could just have like every language. It'd be cool if there was a translate to all languages and just generate one for everything. Just maximize your audience there. But yeah, that's cool. I'm excited about that. And the published stuff is the same draft, a social post, summarize draft, a title, covered a lot. Oh, templates. Let me talk about this for a moment. I briefly showed it, but inside of scenes, this is how you get to templates. Now there's no template button like there used to be. So what you have to do is go to scene and then again the scene button is to manipulate the properties within the scene that you're currently on. So If I do that, then up here at the top is where your templates are. And so I could choose an existing template, like my Descript Mastery templates. I could choose my private ones. I could choose Gallery, which is descripts, the ones that they've created. And I could say, like, let's check this one out. There is an error changing the text, I think, because I already had a text layer applied, but that's how you apply a template, so it's pretty cool. And then if you want to save a template. So like this setup that I have right here, if I wanted to make a template out of this, a reusable element, I could hit these three dots and I could say, save to template. I could choose a folder to put it in and then I could just hit add, add to template, and it would go in there and I could use it in any project. Yeah, and I got the. The layers there. Talked about that. I feel like there's got to be other new stuff. Spinner. Let me see this script if needed to. Oh, that's not. We had that before. I think it was called circle, but that's like the. The progress bar, but it just closes a circle as the video plays. Then arrows, light leak. Yeah, I think everything's pretty much the same that I didn't call out. Oh, the arrow. No, we had arrows before. But as before, you have a little bit different properties where you can change the color, the width, the opacity, all that is just directly above the element now inside of the canvas. Or you can change it here where it says border, Change the thickness, change the color, like so. Okay. Unless I get any other questions next 30 seconds. I think this is a good stopping point and appreciate everyone joining today and appreciate the questions. And I'll be here next Friday. Plans to be here every Friday at 12:30pm Pacific Time, so you can ask your questions about Descript. See ya. Bye. Bye.
