Claude and Descript Edited This Video

Ross Zeiger connects Claude to Descript via MCP connector and uses natural-language prompts to edit a video: removing filler words, applying Studio Sound, adding logos with animations, generating chapters, and publishing. The workflow hits errors and limitations but shows what AI video editing could become.

Cloud and Descript edited the entire video that you're about to watch. Let's see how it does. What you're about to learn is how to use Descript with an AI assistant, also known as MCP. And what I have on the screen right now is the article from Descript's Help Center, which I'll link in the description of this video. And I do that because this is a really quickly evolving topic. So if anything that I show is out of date, be sure to check this article because this will be the most up-to-date process. First of all, what can you do with the MCP? You can import media from a website or directly from files that are living on your computer. You can do anything that Underlord can do, editing with Underlord, that is. So that's things like transcribing, adding captions, removing filler words, et cetera. Everything that Underlord can do, you will be able to do through either Claude ChatGPT. You can target specific compositions in a project. You can find and manage your projects. You can have the AI assistant organize your folders, and you can even have the AI publish your finished projects for you. And it gives you progress updates as it's working, and you just tell it stuff in plain English. So it has some examples of prompts that you could try. For the sake of this demo, as I mentioned, I'm going to show you this in Cloud because that happens to be what I'm currently paying for. So one important thing you need to know is to do this, this requires Cloud desktop app. So you can't do this through your browser, you have to download the desktop app, which I'm going to show you. So to do that, you can go to cloud.ai/downloads, and that brings you to this page. And right here there is a thing that says desktop. So this is going to be an application that you download to your computer. I am on Mac, so it says download for macOS, but this would work the exact same way if you were on Windows. So download that and install that. Find the file on your computer, open it up by clicking on it, drag the Claude app into your applications, open up your applications, and open up the Claude app. And it's going to say, is an app downloaded from the internet, do you want to open it? Yes. And here I am inside of the Claude app. And if you're doing this for the very first time, It'll ask you to log in, it'll open up your browser and you'll have to sign in or create your Claude account. But once you've done that, hover over this little thing in the top left corner, come down to your name, click on that, go to settings, and on the left side, click on the one that says connectors. And it's telling me that connectors have moved to customize. So this is an example of how things change. This is new as of today. So I'm gonna click on customize. That little blue link that's there, and it takes me to all the available connectors. I already have Descript connected, so I'm gonna start this process over so you can see it. So I have it down there under the not connected section. But if you are doing this from scratch, next to the word connector, click on the plus button, click on the add custom connector. And here under name, type in Descript. And on the next line where it says remote MCP server URL. You're gonna need to paste in an exact link here, which is on the Descript Help Center. So another reason why you need this page. So this is under step 2. You're just gonna highlight that whole thing, HTTPS all the way to MCP, hit copy with Command+C, come back to Claude, Command+V, and hit add. And it opened up a window in my browser that says connect with Descript MCP. And I'm gonna hit allow, and I can now close this tab and come back to Claude. And now Descript is on my list of connectors. Now, if I click on Descript, these are all the permissions that this connection has. So in order for this to do the maximum amount of things, I could change this to always allow. Or if I want to have a little bit more control, I could say needs approval where it's going to ask me if it's allowed to do something. Or I could say blocked if I don't want it to do that. For example, there's a line that says publish project that is currently under needs approval. That's a good thing to leave like that. I don't want to just to go randomly posting stuff onto my YouTube if, if something goes haywire. So I'm going to leave that on needs approval. I might even say blocked just to be safe. So go through all of these and adjust them according to your uses and your comfort level with Claude being able to control these things in your Descript projects. Now that we have that connected, we can go back with the back button in the top left corner and we're on the homepage. And if you come up to that icon in the top left corner, once again, you can see, you can toggle between Cowork, which is what's currently selected for mine. Code on the right side, or for our purposes, the one that we want to use, Chat. Click on that and then close outta that menu. And then click on this plus button, click on Connectors and make sure it's toggled on. And as long as it's on, we can go back to our chat window. And this is where we're gonna actually prompt it. So what I'm gonna have this do, what I'm gonna demo in this video is Descript actually— Descript and Claude actually editing the video that I am recording right now and the video that you are watching right now. So the first thing I'm gonna say is in Descript, that just tells Claude what tool it's working with and where it needs to go. So you could say this in different ways. You could say open up Descript or using Descript, something like that. But I'm gonna say in Descript, open up the project called Day 2 and find the composition called Claude plus Descript. And you can choose your model. I like to use the latest one, which is 4.7, and send that. Okay. And it found it. So it said the Day 2 project has 2 compositions and Claude Descript is the second one. And then it's got some information about the project. And then it says, want me to do anything with it? Pull the transcript, run an edit via the agent, publish it or something else. This is a little tricky. I'm gonna need to stop this recording. In order to allow it to edit the video. So what I'm gonna do is record the rest of this demo on another app. I am now recording from another software called OBS. So here is the Descript project, and there's the intro you saw at the very beginning of this video, assuming that I'm gonna leave it in. And then here are a bunch of takes where I was saying my hook. I was like, Descript recently added the ability to edit your videos. And I had a bad take there. I had a bad take there because I said it again here. Descript recently added the ability to connect with ChatGPT and Claude, a fourth version there. And then after all of that, I get into the screen recording that you just watched up until now. Okay, so that is the raw video just to show you that this is all raw. It's 15 minutes and 20 seconds right now. So we already know that Claude is seeing our Descript project. And since I just finished the recording, it went from 3 and a half minutes to 15:20. So I'm just going to tell it, look again, I've updated the project. I don't know if this is strictly necessary, but I just want to make sure it's working with the same version that I have. Okay. So there we go. It says new duration, 15 minutes, 21 seconds. That matches up with what I'm seeing over here. and now let's just give it a couple softballs. Let's say I said, edit out the bad takes and filler words, only remove ums and uhs, leave all others and avoid harsh cuts. I'm gonna send that. Okay. And I'm getting an unable to reach Descript. Okay. And I can see things happening in Descript. I can see auto-leveling in progress. I can see it crossing stuff out. And it did it. The interesting and confusing thing is I actually got a warning. It says unable to reach Descript. So I'm not going to edit this kind of stuff out because you might experience this too. But despite that, it still did it. So it said all done. The agent worked through both passes and it actually edited out my intro, which I didn't want it to. So what I'm going to do is find the start of my good take, and I'm just going to highlight it straight off the transcript. I'm going to copy that, I'm going to come over to Claude, and then I pasted it in. Restore the take that starts with, and I pasted it in. I'm going to hit send, and let's see if it's smart enough to bring that back. And while it's working on something, it says running here, and then there's a link. So if you don't already have the Descript project open, you can click on that And that'll open up your Descript project. Okay. And I can see it restored what I asked it to. Oh, and I was going to say it, it also restored before it, but it looks like it just recut that. So I think we're looking good. It's got my intro where I'm saying that Claude and Descript edited this. And then it goes into Descript recently added the capability to connect. And now it's telling me that it's done. So I'm gonna tell it apply Studio Sound at 80% throughout the entire project. There's 3 separate videos in here so far, so I'm going to expect it to apply it 3 different times. And again, I'm gonna check that it applies it at 80%, not the default 100%. Okay. And it says it's done. So let me click on my video. There's studio sound. And yep, sure enough, 80%. And let me just resize these windows here so we got a little bit more real estate. Okay, so that one's 80%. The second one is 80%. And let's check our screen recording. That one is 80%. So far, so good. Now I'm gonna try something a little bit different. I'm gonna ask it if it can find some images, some logos of Claude and Descript and add that to the video. I said, can you find the logos of Claude and Descript and add them to the videos as a layer when I mention them? For example, I'd like Claude to slide in from the left and Descript from the right when they are mentioned. Let's see how it does. And I'll just return to the beginning of the project and let's see what it does. And I can see it's going to Wikimedia URLs for direct import of each of those logos. Okay, so I tried a bunch of stuff and it's failed at a few things, but it seems to have finally found a logo it can work with, or even maybe created it. It says, let me create the logos and upload them directly. Okay, so it says import media completed. Let's just see. It hasn't added it yet, but it is still working. So let me just be patient. Okay, so it took quite a long time to do all of this and it half did it. It got the Claude logo imported. It hit a wall on the Descript logo. It couldn't find it and it didn't add it as a layer to my project, which was what I told it. But this is a good learning lesson. We're going to import the Descript logo and see if it'll finish up. So. I'm going to go into my computer. There's the Descript logo. I'm going to bring it into Descript, and I'm going to tell Claude, I just added the Descript logo to the project files, can you finish? Let's see what it does. And by the way, another thing you can do is while it's working, you can actually queue tasks. So watch this, while it's still working on that logo step, I'm going to start giving instructions. I said add a cross zoom transition between scene 1 and 2. And actually, I was wrong, you cannot queue tasks in this environment. I'm used to the Claude Cowork and Claude Code where you can queue tasks, but it looks like I actually cannot do that here. Okay, so I added the Claude logo. That's a good start. Let's see if it'll resize it and add the animation. Okay, so it added the Claude logo in the top left corner, but it's kind of it cropped it strangely. Like, let me just undo that so it's the full logo again. And it didn't add the Descript logo. So let me— well, first of all, I'm going to give it this cross-zoom prompt. Let's, let's go ahead and run that since I already had it typed in. Okay. And I think it did it. If I go to properties, out, cross-zoom. Yep. It added it. Descript recently added the capability Okay. Okay. So let's return to the beginning and I'm going to say in parentheses, I'm going to tell it the name of the Descript logo, just so it knows what it's looking at. Cause in here it's called logo_monogram.png. So just so it knows to look at the right thing and have them slide in from the corners when mentioned. And I'm going to send that and let's see what it does. Oh, wow. Okay. So we have an issue here. It says the Descript logo is already on the timeline. In the earlier pass, we placed 15 overlays and 18 Claude overlays. So I think I originally told it every time I mention it. So, oh yep, I'm zooming out on the timeline. Look at that. Using Claude is how to use Descript with— okay, so this is a good example of a bad prompt. So it did what I told it to, but this isn't what I wanted. So I didn't, I didn't communicate properly. So I'm gonna click on this one that says something else. I'll explain. And then this'll give me a chance. It'll say, got it. Go ahead and explain what you'd like. So I'm gonna say, and you know what? I just realized something else. In scene 1, Descript is misspelled, so that's probably throwing it off as well. So another learning point here, if we correct that, let me say Descript and I'll say correct all 'cause it's, it misspelled it twice like that. So I'm gonna say correct all. Okay, so now that's fixed. And so back to our prompt, I'm gonna say remove all the logos except in scene 1 and add in the Descript logo there. Okay, Descript logo's coming in. Let's see if it resizes it. Let's see if it adds the animation. Okay, it says done. Logo overlays are now confined to scene 1 only. Remove 32 overlays. Let me just zoom out and check its work. Okay, yeah, it's clean. And yeah, the Descript logo's there. However, it cropped it again, so I'm gonna double-click on it, fix its work like that. Let's just move it down a little bit. And it did add the animation. Animation, slide to the right. And this one has slide in and out as well. So, okay, awesome. I might tweak those. I might have it tweak those a little bit later, but for now, let's just play it. Let's see what we got. Claude in Descript edited the entire video that you're about to watch. Okay, not a choice I would've made for it to slide out. Into the corners like that. But this is Claude's video, so I'm gonna leave that. Now, one quick note, because I know this is gonna come up in the comments, is how many credits are you burning? And the answer is a lot. So if I come up to the three menu line up there, I come to settings, I come to usage. I get 3,000 credits a month because I have a business plan with two seats on it. Let's see here. You can see some of these Underlord. It doesn't give the time, so I don't know exactly which ones these were, but one of the Underlord ones, that was probably adding the logo, burned 100 credits and then 12.3, 10.6. So I've probably burned, just scrolling through here quickly, I've, let's see, some of this stuff was from earlier today. I've probably burned like 200 credits so far, just showing you what I've done so far. So if I were to edit this whole video like this, I would burn potentially 1,000 credits. So be aware of that. This isn't a sustainable thing to do for every single project unless you're paying for a lot of credits or you have a workflow super dialed in where you can be a lot more efficient than I'm being. Now I'm going to ask it What else do you think this video needs? Okay, so I don't like its suggestions. It said number 1, captions. Nope, I'm not gonna add captions to a landscape video. That's dumb. Number 2, a music bed. Nope, I'm not gonna add music to a tutorial. That doesn't make sense. B-roll cutaways. It thinks that those are drone clips cuz their DJI is my camera. Um, nope, I'm not going to add those because they're already in there. Chapter markers or section titles. The video probably moves through 4 or 5 distinct steps. Oh, that's actually a good idea. I'm going to have it do that. And then it says a bumper or outro, an end card or CTA, and hook quality check. Okay, so I'm going to tell it to do 4 through 6. I'm going to hit enter. Okay, and it's telling me it's done. It's telling me it added chapter titles, which I'm not seeing, at least in— okay, it added it on the screen itself, but it didn't add markers on the transcript. So I'm gonna have it do that in a second. And I'm gonna go to the very end. And it added an outro. Oh, this is interesting. It added a AI-generated video that I made in another composition within this project. So that's what it was talking about by Rising Tide. That was the name of this AI generation. So I don't want that in there. I'm gonna delete that. Um, I'm gonna refine that outro, but I'm gonna tell it add chapters to this video. And by the way, this is an example of something that I could go to AI tools over here on the right side. I could click add chapters and I could do it that way. One note that I saw in one of Descript's own tutorials about this was that there's things that are burning credits on both sides. So it's every time you use an AI tool in Descript, it's of course burning credits in Descript. And you can see the costs of different AI tools on their website. They have a, a table that shows you exactly what everything costs. So add chapters. I don't know offhand, but let's say it's 10 credits. But then there's certain things that Claude does. So like when I'm, when I'm having a conversation with Claude, like, like this one where I asked it, what else do I think this video needs? This didn't get sent to Descript. So this is staying on the Claude side and this is coming out of my Claude usage. So be aware of that if you're hitting your limits in Claude. I have the Claude Max plan. It's like $200 a month. So I very rarely hit my limits, but if you're on the free plan, that's a very real risk. Okay, so it added my timestamps and I can see that it in fact did. It did that correctly. And that timestamp for that chapter corresponds with the title it put on the screen. And now I'm gonna tell it one more thing. So because I'm— there's a lot of times where I'm pausing and I'm letting Underlord think, or or rather Claude think. I'm telling it find gaps of 5 seconds or more and change the speed to 10x. Find gaps of 30 seconds or more and change the speed to 30x. So you can see right here there's like a big gap on the timeline. If I zoom out, that is a 36-second gap. So I'm gonna expect it to take that and all the rest of 'em and speed it way up. So let's see how it does. And by the way, my project is 12 minutes and 23 seconds. When it starts to make this change, I expect that's probably gonna go down to like 5 minutes after it gets rid of all the silences. Okay, so it's done and it's telling me some things over here, but right off the bat I noticed that it, it did it, but it made each gap into its own scene, which is an interesting choice. So there's now 37 scenes, which isn't wrong. But not necessarily how I would do it. And then it told me one thing to flag: Descript caps playback speed at 10x. That's incorrect. So the 30x tier couldn't be honored. So there, this might be a limitation of its capabilities. Um, I can see that it did do the 10x. That's great. But if I click on one of these and I go to properties, I go to duration and then I bump it up to 30x. Boom. I just did it. So again, AI in general is often wrong with things and sometimes it's just, maybe as far as it knows it's correct, it's just for some reason it's unable to access the 30x. But anyways, I just happen to know that that's possible and so I called its bluff there. Okay, what else did it do? A few spots to spot check. So it gave me some things that, for whatever reason it has questions about. Now I noticed that the screen share isn't filling the whole frame. I don't know if it did that before, but now that this is not in one scene anymore and it's split up into like a bunch of scenes, I'm gonna ask it if it can fix that across my entire project. Said, can you make the screen share fill the frame everywhere that it is visible? Okay. And it did that correctly as well. Now, before I do the final thing, I just for fun want to do another usage check. So I think I was at 1,200 the last time I showed it. I'll put the number on the screen. I forget what it was, but I'm now at 1,400. So I used maybe 400 credits for everything that I've shown you today. Again, I'll put the exact number on the screen in just a moment, but that would be half of your monthly allocation if you're on the Creator plan. So be aware of that. This probably isn't a sustainable thing to do for every single video yet, but over time these AI credits will probably get more efficient and it's just a really fun thing to do. Okay, so the last thing I'll tell Claude is go ahead and publish this project to a web link. And that it asked for my permissions there. If you remember at the beginning. I had to choose different settings on like what I wanted it to be able to do, or if it needed to ask me permissions. And if you remember on the publish category, I said always ask. And so that is why it did that. So you could have it ask you for allowing or denying things as you go, if there's things you worry about it doing on its own. Okay. Published your shareable link. Boom. Let's click on it. Open link. Let's just verify it's work one last time. Boom. There it is. That's amazing. If I go to export. Yep. Sure enough, it shows that it's already been published. Ladies and gentlemen, you just witnessed history. That was AI editing my project for me, and someday I could get that all systematized into a series of steps that I just give it and I say, go ahead, make these edits, you got this. And eventually I could even say, look at the video edited by fill in the blank, some other creator that I like with amazing editing. And I could say, copy their style of editing and do that here. I could even put in motion graphics. The point is, this is like day one of this technology. This is the worst that it's ever gonna be. It's only gonna get better from here. And a year from now, 2 years from now, we'll look back at this video and laugh at how silly and primitive this was. I'm in awe. Like, a computer just edited my video for me.
