How To Remove Filler Words

Descript's filler-word removal detects repeated words and common fillers in your podcast, shows counts, and lets you remove all at once, skip specific instances, or replace them with silence. You can restore removed words by dragging scene boundaries or search for custom words to remove.
You can remove all of your ums and uhs from your podcast with the click of a button in descript. This feature called filler word removal, is available to all users, both free and paid. However, pro users get some additional features like the removal of words like. Like, you know, so. And kind of. And if you don't have descript, there's an affiliate link in the description, so you can download it for free right now. To apply filler word removal, find the star in the top right of your transcript section. Click it. We come down to remove filler words. It brings up this box where it's found all filler words. And if we click it, we can see what it was looking for. It looks for repeated words. So if you say a word multiple times in a row while you're thinking, it'll find that. So you can remove those. And it found so. But you know, all that kind of stuff. Um, the number on the right here tells us how many instances of those it found. And then those words are here on the right. And what we can do is we can. We can click remove all, which will blanket remove everything. And I'm going to go ahead and do that just to show you. So I click it and they're gone. If you're noticing here on the transcript there was the. And the. So there. And it's now been replaced with this vertical gray line. And I'm gonna go ahead and undo that. And it's back. You can see that they're highlighted in yellow as well as underlined with a dotted blue line that's telling me that those are filler words that have been found. And I can. Right now it's set to delete. Or I can do delete and replace with gap, which would put a blank screen and silence there. Or I can do ignore, which would delete it from. Would delete the sound, but it wouldn't delete it from the transcript. But delete deletes it from the transcript and from the audio. So you won't hear it and you won't see it. Okay, the next thing we can do is here are all of the. The words it's found and we can play these one at a time by clicking on it. And it'll play it in context. So it'll play a couple seconds before that word. It'll play the word itself and then a couple seconds after it like this, I'm going to click on the first one script. So first of all. And I'm going to go ahead and remove that rather than. Rather than the remove all that we already saw. I can remove just this one instance by clicking remove and it's gone first of all. And after I click it, it automatically goes to the next filler word, which is this. And once again, I'm going to review it. Um, first of all. And I'm going to go ahead and delete that one as well by hitting remove to do so. And then when I highlight, and then on this third one, I'm going to do an ignore just so you can see how this looks. So when I hit remove, it's going to do the ignore to do. And then when I highlight and it's gone from the audio, but it is still here in my transcript with a strikethrough, it's crossed out. So that just lets me keep awareness that it's there. And if I want to bring it back, I can come down to my timeline, I can click the boundary of the scene and drag it to restore that word. And now it's back in my transcript and on my timeline. One last thing I'll show you with the filler word removal is we can also find other words other than just filler words. Maybe there's something that you say in particular, or maybe there's a word that descript transcribed incorrectly. I see the word Oxford here. I'm just going to, just for demonstration purposes, type this into the search and there it is. It found Oxford in there twice. And if I wanted to remove it, I can just hit the remove button or I can say again, delete, delete and replace with gap. If you found this useful, give the video a thumbs up and check out the rest of my descript videos.
